Sita Sings the Blues

For any animation fans out there, this film is WELL worth seeing.

Firstly because it is a VERY good film. Major critics such as Roger Ebert raved about it:

Secondly because it is the first film I know of to ever be released without copyright. Than means Sita sings the Blues can be downloaded, in its entirety, for free. You can download a 700MB version, a DVD quality 4GB version or (if you are really determined) a 200GB cinema print quality version.

The entire film was created by one person on a desktop PC over five years. The story is remarkable as it intercuts a modern marriage breakdown with ancient tales from Hindu mythology, and sets it to early 1920’s jazz. The animation is excellent (not $180M Pixar standard obviously).

Anyway I really recommend you watch it.

I am very interested in this. I have a couple questions though. Was this released in theaters? Does it have an MPAA rating? Anyways it looks like a very good film. I should watch it some time.

TAMATER

1 - No it has no distributor, so was never released in theatres. It has appeared at a number of film festivals however.

2 - It does not have an MPAA rating. I’d guess PG for some mild animated violence.

That’s an interesting concept. I wonder how Nina Paley (creator) would make money. I think they’re looking into selling copies of their DVDs, so that could be a source of income.

I’ve heard about this, but I didn’t know it was free and you could even make profits from it! :open_mouth:
To quote Hyundai’s annoying tagline: Now that’s generous!
I must download it and give it a look, I like the ‘fusion’ style.
