Yeah, not so much success with the petition so let’s ignore that for the moment.
When watching a Disney Look Back thing on That Fellow With The Coat, it mentioned the whole re-releases thing they did with movies in cinemas back before they had DVDs and VHSs. Do you know what I mean? I shortly realized that the whole Disney Vault concept was similar to the concept of re-releasing movies in cinemas before they had VHSs and DVDs.
Yeah, it kind of is! They re-released movies to theaters all the way up to the pre-DVD era, I remember Pinocchio was reissued sometime in the 90’s.
Wow, I don’t know why I didn’t make that connection before, thanks for pointing that out.
I didn’t know that until I read a biography on Walt Disney earlier this year. When I read that, I couldn’t believe it! If I remember correctly, it was after the opening of Disneyland, and all of the critical and commercial success it brought to the Disney empire, that they started doing the vault thing with his early movies. Most of the movies that go back in the vault weren’t popluar when they were originally released. But when those movies became huge after the opening of Disneyland, they started the vault thing. For years I thought that was something that the suits thought up during the 00’s to sell merchandise to new generations of kids every seven years. As much as I don’t like the vault, I gotta say, it does work. Well at least on me. It always feels like an event when a DIsney classic is released again. Especially when it has a lot of good extras. But when they released Alice in Wonderland on Blu-ray recently, it didn’t feel like and event because it was already avalible to purchase. So unlike the other Blu-ray releases, I didn’t feel like I gotta have it right away. I see that amazon.com is currently selling Sleeping Beauty Diamond Edition for 40 bucks. I’m currently debating on whether or not I want to spend that much on it. It’s the one Blu-ray release I missed, and I can’t find in stores.
