Star Wars

I’ve noticed there’s quite a few Star Wars fans here, but I haven’t seen a topic where fellow fans can discuss this truly amazing saga of films. (If there already is one, please feel free to lock, mods.)

I’d thought it would be fun to discuss the series with other people on this board, a most sites dedicated to Star Wars tend to be full of very…passionate fans, to put it nicely, but I fins that you can’t get the full picture from just those fans. So here’s a place to talk about anything you want that has to do with Star Wars: the films, the tv shows, the EU, collecting, games, whatever you want.

I’ll go first, just to get things rolling. I’m what is considered a “second generation” fan, as I had seen the OT (Original Trilogy), before The Phantom Menace came out, but that was where I really started to get into Star Wars, and that is the era I really know, and grew up with. I love both trilogies, with my favorite being Revenge of the Sith, followed very closely by A New Hope, which I do consider the best of the franchise. I play alot of the games, and I read some of the books, mostly in the PT (Prequel Trilogy) era.

Well, that’s my spiel for now. I’d really like to hear from more fans of the franchise.
(Again, if something simialr to this already exists, you know what to do, mods.)

I am not a big Star Wars fan. Never was interested. However, I was always excited when I saw a light saber battle.

Yeah, I have to admit, the lightsaber duels are probably my favorite part of Star Wars. I really wish we had more movies nowadays, that feature swashbuckling.

If my brother had a Pixar Planet account, he’d be all over this thread. It’s one of his favorite movie series (maybe his favorite) up there with Indiana Jones and Batman.

Star Wars is alright. I like it. I like the original trilogy much better than the prequel ones. (although Episode III was pretty good) I gotta say though R2-D2 and C-3PO were my main reasons for even getting into it in the first place. I watch it when I catch it on TV although the only DVD I have is Episode IV. I’m not in any way what you’d call a rabid fan (that label’s been reserved for another sci-fi franchise  ) so I dont go around calling myself a Jedi or a Sith or anything. I dont own any plastic lightsabers  But it is pretty creative and I do enjoy it.

I deny the existence of the prequels. In fact, I have no idea what you’re talking about. No idea at all.

Boba Fett is obviously my fave character. Here’s additional proof of my crazed devotion. dya.mine.nu/fett_stuff/fetts.jpg

Wow, really? I no most fans were dissapointed, but not even aknowledging them? I’m sorry, but they’re not bad movies, and certainly not nearly as bad as people pretend they are.

Well Ep 2 ruined everything that was great about Boba Fett. He used to be mysterious. There wasn’t a solid official story about his past, just rumors. And then Lucas went and made him a lame canonical back story.

Here’s Patton Oswalt’s take on the prequels. FYI there is some strong language in the clip.

As for the prequels themselves I really hate the overabundance of CGI. It’s just not good enough yet for me and always stands out. LOTR, on the other hand, is I think a great example of making good use of CGI.

I can see where you’re coming from on the Boba Fett thing, but it never really bothered me all that much. I actually liked the father/son thing they did, though I wasn’t as fond of the clone thing. It wasn’t nearly enough to the rest of the movie for me.

I’ve heard about the Patton Oswalt thing, and he has a few good points, but he was doing that for comedy, and again, it doesn’t mean the movies are terrible.

First, of all. Revenge of the Sith, had the best CGI in a movie, at the very least to that date. Sorry, better than LOTR, too. In fact, the CGI is very good in all three prequels. LOTR didn’t have nearly as much CGI, as Star Wars did, and that’s fine if you don’t like alot of CGI. I actually agree that LOTR made good use of CGI, and I think using minatures, and the like, is smarter than just relying on CGI. Still, that doesn’t mean the prequels are terrible, and it doesn’t bother me at all. It’s very good CGI, and it’s part of the movie. To be honest, I don’t really see that as a legitimate criticism, it seems like more of a personal preference.

(Sorry, if I am coming of as a jerk, I don’t mean to anger or upset anyone, I’m just trying to be honest.)

Wow, and I dont even remember Boba Fett being in the second one. Shows how much I was paying attention. Or else it shows how much that movie actually impacted me, which is to say, not very much

Star Wars is one of my passions. Though I was born I’m 90s, I watched the original trilogy special editions before The Phantom Menace was released. And, of course, the adventures of Luke, Leia, Han and Chewie still excited and interested me more than the prequel trilogy.

The ground-breaking practial effects used in the originals make them magical, although ILM did a jaw-droppingly good job with the Battle of Coruscant in the opening scenes of Revenge of the Sith and the Battle of the Heroes on Mustafar.

Although I prefer the original trilogy, I really think George Lucas did a excellent job with the prequels. They still made audiences everywhere sit on the edge of their seat, even though we knew what eventually beacme of Anakin Skywalker and Obi-Wan Kenobi.

Lucas and Dave Filoni have also done a terrific job with The Clone Wars television show. The animation has consistantly improved as season one progressed and the trailer for season two definitely proves that. I can’t wait until season two airs on Cartoon Network!

And has anyone read ‘Splinter of the Mind’s Eye’, the first official expanded universe novel?

Yes though I don’t remember many details. I do remember how odd it was though since it was (obviously) a big change from the now canonical personality/stories or the characters.

Yeah, even for the first EU novel, I thought it had a pretty decent storyline.

…woah. that collection would make my little brother so jealous.
Star wars was good to an extent. then I saw the dismemberment. Being a child, I was pretty much scarred and i still cant get over it.

I’m a hard-core STAR WARS fan. Yes, I’m one of those who owns an original Master Replicas lightsaber and some figures, and who know the names of obscure characters most people doesn’t know.

And I’m proud of that. The contribution made by this franchise is undeniable. Even the prequels aren’t as bad as most people pretend. In a future not so far away, the hate will reced and they will be revalorated.

Anyway, I see some of your points, Fett101, but I find odd that you deny the existence of the prequels and you have Darth Maul on your signature :stuck_out_tongue:

The original trilogy is just amazing, yes. I find it so interesting Lucas was inspired to make the films out of order. Does anyone know what his reasoning was? It is pretty cool.

I have to say though, I really liked Phantom Menace. Podracing is really cool, Qui-Gon-Jinn is one of the best Jedis ever, Darth Maul is awsome, “Duel of the Fates” is such a brilliant song, and it was just a lot of fun.

And how about little Anakin. Aww! The kid who played him is also in Jingle All the Way, which I watch every December.

My knowledge of the backstory to Star Wars is a bit hazy (I’ve seen all six films, but I’m not a fanatic), but I’m led to believe that Lucas needed to write the first film as a stand-alone picture and see how well that did before he could start working on any additional installments (since nobody at the time envisioned that it would be nearly as successful as it was). The “middle” of the story was most viable in that regard.

Ahh, that makes sense, yes. Clearly the original trilogy (and film itself) was able to stand on it’s own.

Thank you sir!

You’re welcome.

Long live STAR WARS!

We know it played a pivotal role in Pixar’s creation, so we all must be grateful!
