Tangled

Wow, that sucks, Rac_Rules. Makes me wish Lumiere would set fire to their sorry butts… 8D

Disney gets on my nerves! They bought Marvel! It doesn’t get more boycentric than that! What are they going to do when the next movie comes out and it doesn’t have singing and dancing in it? After being turned off my PatF, and being tricked into seeing Tangled, the boy demographic that they are trying so hard to get, may feel burned by Disney and won’t go to see their next movie. And I know this is beating a dead horse. But DIsney get’s on my nerves, and I gotta say it again. PatF would have done better if it wasn’t going up against the two juggernauts it was going up again at the time. I bet if PatF had pulled in about 100 to 150 million more at the box office, Disney would have worked harder on fixing the Snow Queens story problems. Why not give the girls, and boys (like me) who enjoys hand drawn musicals something to watch, while they give boys their Marvel movies, tv shows and merchandise. I’m sure they would make plenty of movey.

theoutsider1983: They tried to make 2D animated non-musicals for boys. Remember Atlantis: The Last Empire and Treasure Planet? I don’t remember Atlantis too well, but I love Treasure Planet. TP bombed at the box office. Though you can blame this on bad marketing, I guess.

I remember Atlantis and Treasure Planet! My brother’s loved those when they were younger. They just need to release a film for the more modern younger boy generation.

Still I am so excited for Tangled to come out. I didn’t like Princess and the Frog too much, so it will be nice to see there next stab of a princess sort of film.

Ugh, Rac_Rules, I know how you feel. It’s one thing just not to like it, I mean, it happens. But it is far from the worst movie ever! Maybe it’s understandable that some don’t like Cinderella, mostly because she’s so damsel-in-distress (I like it, but not as much as other Disney films), but Beauty & the Beast has such a strong, moving story!
I remember being aquainted with someone who has REALLY different views and tastes in movies than me, so when I brought up Beauty & the Beast, he said it sucked because the beginning tried to be scary but failed and that “they were like ‘oh, let’s turn this into a [bleeping] musical!’”
So I don’t bring up Disney around him, then. :unamused: Not everyone I know likes musicals. I have two friends that enjoy Disney but the only song they like is Circle of Life.
But who knows? Maybe they’ll find something in Tangled that works as another exception. But in the meantime, I’m not telling them it’s a musical, so they can stay interested.

Okay, don’t be mad at Disney.

They’re just trying to turn around. Rac, I love both of those!! Though I much prefer Atlantis.

This looks good to me. So it is a musical? Good. That’s comforting to me.

Ugh, I know how you feel BDD. Most of my friends hate Disney (except for Pixar). I never talk about it around them. One time for no apparent reason at a party, one of them went on and on about how stupid, boring, pointless and cheesy all their movies are, and how he doesn’t even get the appeal of them. I’m like, seriously? :unamused: I dislike a lot of the things you like, but I never even THINK about going on tangents about how I feel about them. Gosh, some people…

Yeah, that’s exactly what they’re doing. Most boys today wouldn’t be caught dead near a Disney movie, so I do understand why they’re marketing Tangled this way (even though I don’t necessarily agree with it, but oh well…).

But anyways, I really do understand how you feel, Rac_Rules, bright dot-dasher and Leirin. It’s really hard for me to talk about Disney to anyone in my family or my friends because most of them either hate or don’t care for Disney. It’s why I’m glad I can come online and talk about it with other people who are fans of Disney too just like me.

Although I have to say, my brother actually went from hating Disney entirely to being a little bit more open-minded towards their films (mainly because of me, LOLOL xDD). He even likes some of the songs too, but he doesn’t like it when the characters actually start singing them in the movie because he finds it “embarrassing” for some reason (I guess it’s because he doesn’t really like musicals). One time he asked me, “It’s really embarrassing. I mean Isn’t it embarrassing how the characters randomly burst into song under the sparkling moonlight, as they dance the night away?” and I was like, “… No, not really.” (although I LOLed at the way he gestured and worded the question. xDDDD). But he told me if I could find some the soundtracks alone, then he’d definitely be interested in listening to them. He even likes some of the Disney Princesses, and finds Pocahontas the most attractive out of all of them.

Recently we watched Cinderella together, and I also let him listen to some of the songs from the soundtrack that was on my iPod, and he told me he really, REALLY liked the music. I was really surprised he liked it so much because the lyrics from the songs in that movie aren’t exactly on par with his own preferences in lyrics (his taste in music and lyrics is really sophisticated and he hates contemporary music a lot). I asked him why Cinderella, and he was like: “Well the lyrics do their job. But the music just feels really soothing and calming. Much better than the crap I’m bombarded with today.”

Phew, I was for some reason afraid it wasn’t going to be a musical. The music is what I like best in Disney movies, so I’d be heartbroken without it. </3

I’m fairly lucky to have a family that loves Disney, but I mean not LOVES Disney. That would be moi. I am completely, totally, unbelievably in love with classic Disney. Nothing can beat it. My room is themed as a Disney hotel room  So pretty much everyone who knows me doesn’t dare mess with my Disney, my dear, dear Disney  it’s great to come on here and talk to people like me

As far as I know, I am the first to post this. Finally.

so I got the how to draw book today and found out some really really interesting stuff. First of all, Rapunzel hair does get cut and she does cry on Flynn at the end. She also turns brunette, which I find appropriate since Mandy Moore did the same thing with her hair. And, Flynn Rider is not his real name! It turns out that his name is Eugene. ew. I know. I really don’t understand why they had to do that, but I guess it’s for the better. :stuck_out_tongue: I really don’t doubt Disney much…

I don’t blame him, the music in that movie is so beautifully soothing! Especially “So This is Love”. But anyway…
I become more excited for Tangled each day, It’s probably my most anticipated movie at the moment.

@woody: As much as it tempted me at first, there’s no way am I highlighting to read that. I’ve managed to avoid spoilers for months, and I want to be COMPLETELY surprised when I go and see the movie in November.

Speaking of which, I found two articles, one of which includes an interview with directors Byron Howard and Nathan Greno, and another one which is basically a review from somebody who was at another Tangled test screening recently. Here are some of the highlights from the articles that I found interesting:

First off, for those people who were originally cynical and thought that this was going to be just a parody of Rapunzel, or another “Shrek”, Byron and Nathan both touch on that, stressing that it definitely isn’t.

And also, from the second article, here’s a short review from somebody who was at the test screening:

Woody, I don’t know why, but some of that info makes me nervous. [spoil]How can her hair turn brown like that?[/spoil]

woody: Whoa! I did not see that stuff coming.

I agree with everyone’s sentiments on ‘Disney-haters’. It annoys me to no end that some people are so cynical about honest and feel-good films that they feel they have to criticise it. It’s as if being sarcastic and malicious about everything is ‘cool’ nowadays (Refer to shows by Seth MacFarlane or the latest films by Michael Bay) instead of earnest enthusiasm and light-hearted humour.

I’m fortunate that my brother has recently rediscovered a few Disney films as well as other animated movies on his own accord (though I annoy him every time by discussing contemporary and upcoming ones). I’m not sure what my friends or family think about Disney films in particular, but most of my animation-centric buddies are more obsessed about anime, which is good, but a bit imbalanced.

Rac_Rules: Forgive my ignorance, but whereabouts did you hear it would be a musical?

Pizza Planet Truck: I wanna play ‘Whack-a-Flynn!’ 8D Thanks for the link.

woody: Argh… i’m trying not read the spoiler tags… so tempting.

Danachii: It’s good to know they are listening to the fans. I’m a bit skeptical about the bit where they say they’re trying to make it for a contemporary audience at the same time, and the competition with other movies. It’s a warranted concern, but I fear this is just ‘PR speak’ to excuse themselves if there are any pop-culture jokes in there (which I don’t think there will be, but again, I’m just being cautious).

As for the test screening, it’s great news, but we’re little than two months away and there are still some scenes in storyboard stage? Having done animation, that is way behind schedule IMHO, so I am a trifle concerned. Hope they can pull it off in time! :frowning:

Somehow, I really doubt that they’re only saying it for publicity, or to excuse themselves. Believe me I get what you’re saying and I’m also cautious too on some levels, but they have to make it for a contemporary audience too. If you think about it, peoples tastes keep changing from generation to generation as technology continues improving, not to mention the majority of kids today don’t appreciate classic Disney films like old-schoolers do. So they HAVE to make it for a contemporary audience. And as much as it is unfortunate, if Disney doesn’t make contemporary films, then they won’t be able to stay in business. Plus it’s a really tough competition out there.

Aww, don’t worry. It’ll be okay. If there’s one thing I’ve learned, is that no matter how bad it’s going or under pressure the crew is over at Disney/Pixar, they always get the product finished on time.

Anyone heard the song yet?
It was on the read-along storybook CD, someone posted it on IMDb earlier today…

Anyway, here’s the link:

Danachii: Valid points, there. I, too, have faith Disney will get this done on time (By the way, I believe Pixar doesn’t always stick to schedule, as proven by the rearranging of Cars 2 and Brave’s release dates).

Oh my god, I remember ‘Read along’ storybooks, I got one for Aladdin and the Cave of Thieves once that I loved listening to!

That track is fantastic, TangledUpInDisney. I really love the water-lapping effects. I wonder what the significance of the lyrics are…

I read a plot summary online, and there is a massive plot hole that they couldn’t have just overlooked. Major spoilers.

If Rapunzel’s magic was within her and not the hair the whole time, then why did Gothel die when the hair was cut? That doesn’t make any sense; the magic wouldn’t have vanished then. Hopefully it’ll be explained in the movie…
