The Art of little_chef (and her sis)

The Rataouille drawings look really magnificently done. I love the detail in them. I know you put a lot of effor in this.

So many artwork, so little time!

The Alfredo sketch was nicely done! Great posture (or not, since he practically slumps a lot since he’s so timid), and how the arm hangs by his side. Fingers look okay.

Tell your sister that one’s of the best B&W shading I’ve ever seen, seriously, her AUTO piece is magnificent!

Humanized Wall-E is adorable! Wonder what he’s so excited about.
Your Remy gift to Mitch is both sweet and cute! Only criticism would be his legs look a little ‘fat’, they’re more like ‘trouser legs’ when he stands upright.

I understand French, so I ‘got’ your title for Baby Horst. I think it’s supposed to be ‘Ma Maman’ (since the French have different possessive pronouns depending on the ‘gender’ of the noun), but it’s a minor grammatical quibble. I don’t exactly get your backstory, but I guess it’ll become more clear if I read (a possible?) upcoming fanfic…

Hans and Lina as siblings? Never thought of that! Very sweet pic though. I wonder what LIna’s going through… good that you use real-life human reference for the hands.

Hans is nicely coloured. I like how you went over the ‘border lines’ for his hair, since a few strands of hair would stick out from the head naturally. Was that traditional painting or done digitally? I would have preferred that you done the BnL logo instead of compositing it, but otherwise, it’s quite good overall.

Keep on truckin’!

Aww, that Remy sketch is so sweet! He looks so happy and content- there must be a very nice smell in the air. I’m sure Mitch will love it! You’ve got some pretty sharp lineart in that sketch of Hans and Lina and I love the way they’re holding each other so close. And the coloured in picture of Hans is really good! The colours work well- not too strong but enough to make the piece stand out. The only critique I have is the same as thedriveintheatre’s, that you’d drawn the BnL logo instead, but it is pretty small so it would be quite difficult to fit in that much detail in that small space. Good work all in all, red!

TSS: Thanks so much! Yes, I do put a lot of effort into my drawings, but a lot of procrastination as well. So I’m really, really glad I got these done. It makes me feel so much better.

TDIT: Thank you! I particularly like the way Alfredo’s posture turned out as well. And my sister says “Thank you!” as well for your comments on her drawing. (I’m still reeling with the fact that it has so many favorites…! Okay, maybe not that many, but a lot more than any of my other drawings!)

Haha, well I’m not the best at rat anatomy, but I tried my best for eyeing it. I did refer to several screenshots from Ratatouille, however, because I wanted to make sure it really looked like Remy.

And for the French title I used Google translate. It’s like the easiest thing to use, but it’s not always accurate, so you can’t really blame me for that one, haha. :stuck_out_tongue: Yes, the backstory is a little hazy… and I’ve already written about it (like, a whole year ago) but am not displaying it publicly because I’m looking to make it into a possible movie script someday (because I’ve been able to distance the characters from Ratatouille quite well… and I’m really, really proud of the overall storyline). If you want, maybe someday I can PM some of it to you.

Aww, shoot, I gave it away! :unamused: Well, not really… I think I mentioned it earlier when talking to Mitch. I’m not really sure how I came up with the idea, but it just seemed to work since they are always with each other and both get along so well together. <3

You really think Hans is nicely colored…? I did it on the computer and had so much trouble with my stupid program…! No worries, though - I’ve figured out a new (and really, really good) way to do line art using the freeware GIMP, so I’ll be using that method when coloring in any artwork in the future. Look out for that here soon! I know what you mean about the BnL logo… I had drawn it out by hand, but it looked like crap.

Thanks so much for the comments and critique; I really appreciate it when someone takes the time to actually tell me where I could have improved things.

lizardgirl: Yes, Mitch did love her picture; she said so on dA. I’m very, very proud of this one in particular; especially because I whipped it up in a matter of twenty minutes!

The key to nice line art is to sketch first, erase extra lines, then use sharp pencils and carefully go over your refined sketch lines. I’m glad you like the way I do it, because it definitely takes up a good amount of time. I used a photograph of my own brother and sister to get the poses right, and I’m happy with the overall result. You really feel the sibling love between them.

Yes, it was hard to draw the BnL logo by hand on paper. (You can refer to what I said to TDIT.) One of these days I would love to get a tablet so I can render those kind of things on the computer using the zoom tool: it really helps to get little details like that in your artwork. The color scheme came out really nice as well: I didn’t want the traditional red-and-white spandex suit design that all the passengers on the Axiom wear, because Hans and Lina got their suits from the Rehab Clinic (basically the Repair Ward for humans… haha). So I wanted a completely different look for them. I think the colors and design turned out nicely.

I want to thank everyone for all your comments and critique. Like I said on dA somewhere, I’m going to be trying this new method of digital line art and coloring here soon with some of my smaller drawings. Eventually, I’m going to get around to doing the picture of Hans and Lina (I had it all done, but a computer freak caused the whole thing to get deleted :unamused:), and I’m really excited to begin experimenting with that. Keep your eye out for new stuff in the near future!

little chef

Really cool, little_chef_eva09  ! I love your Remy sketch. Very cute. And your drawings of Alfredo are awesome, too. The AUTO drawing is done very well also. I love the complexity of that one. It looks really complete. Very nice  .

red - Yeah, you know I loved the Remy drawing.

Both you and your sister continue to improve day by day! As I’ve said before, keep exercising that talent!

– Mitch

You’re welcome, little_chef! Whenever you’re ready, I hope you can share the script with us (or take it to Disney/Pixar if you’re up for it). Keep drawing, regardless of whether people comment or not. Someone’s bound to take notice sooner or later!

Violet Parr: Wow, I honestly never thought you’d be looking at my art… 'cuz I like, don’t do anything “Incredibles” related. Haha, I know you’re a Pixar fan in general, but why I imagined you’d never look at my stuff is another question! xD

My sister is the one who drew that picture of AUTO, by the way. Yeah, she’s two years younger than me, and yet she’s so good at machines and shading detail… while I prefer cartoons, in which not much background detail is required. Haha, lazy me…

Mitch: Awwww thanks!! And I really will be “excercising that talent”. I’ve been inspired by more than you know over the past two weeks, and I really feel that over that time, I’ve been improving in things that I’ve been so scared to do, art-wise. Thank you sincerely for backing me up through it all, and thanks for promising to stand behind me in the future as well!!

TDIT: Ah-haha, it’s a bit too thematic for a Pixar movie and deals with a lot of themes that would never be allowed in a movie that will most likely be viewed by children. Like I said, my original story has been distanced from Ratatouille in as many ways as possible so that someday I may be able to write it out as a script. With that being said, I’m not saying much about the actual storyline publicly. But I had also mentioned that if you want some details, you can either PM me here on PP or note me on dA. Glad to know you’re interested! It’s kind of a melancholy story, though…

little chef

Eww, double post…

Gosh, this is long overdue… I’ve been trying to get some advice on dA about how to digitally color and shade my artwork, and I finally got some great stuff from a really talented artist there named Kendra Cook (known as =cloudbabykc on dA). This girl is seriously talented, and the simple advice she gave me almost knocked me out. This shading and coloring stuff is so darn simple, and all the while I’ve wondered how the experts do it!

So here’s the first picture I worked on using this coloring/shading technique. I used the freeware GIMP to do all of the work, besides the actual drawing of the picture. You’ve seen it before: it’s my latest sketch of WALL•E as a human. If you have any critique you would like to give me concerning the shading, please do not hesitate to do so. I am a learning artist and would love to get hints and tips all along the way.

You can check out the finished product here. Please full-view as well!

little chef

D’awww, I like the Remy sketch and the baby Horst (could that be the same guy who’s been to jail before?) . The Hans and Lina sketch is simply sweet and their feelings towards each other are well expressed. Hey, you did and impressive job on coloring your humanized WALL-E using GIMP. It took you two hours? Wouldn’t it have been quicker to color it by hand? Still, I guess it looks brighter and neater colored by computer program. I can’t give any critiques because I don’t use that program.

I think double posts are okay as long as they’re 24 hours apart…

Anyway, it’s great that you’re sharing advice from a fellow DeviantArt member… her work is excellent! But yeah, creative collaborations with peers, that sense that “we’re all in this together” to improve our craft, is one of the best things about being an artist (from personal experience).

Anyway, your colouring for Wall-E is impeccable, and I have no complaints.

Great work little chef!

I’ve been checking out your work through dA so it’s not entirely new to me, but I will say you’re definitely improving. Looks like you caught on to coloring and shading just as easily as well!

Keep up the great work! :-D)

Aww, you guys are all so sweet! <3 I’m so glad you like it!

BDD: I’m beginning to think that Hans and Lina are my new two favorite characters to draw. I absolutely love them to death. Unfortunately, I am always juggling more than one drawing project at a time and tend to get distracted easily, so compositions can sit for months at a time without being touched I will confess that. D:

I’m glad you like the way WALL•E’s coloring came out… my sister kept on telling me the shirt looked okay, but I had my doubts. =/ I think when you’ve stared at it for like, twenty minutes you go cross-eyed and then nothing looks good anymore. xDDD

TDIT: Isn’t she amazing?! She actually added me to her watch list, and I almost died. :stuck_out_tongue:

The coloring is impeccable?? Holy geez, it’s not that good, imo, but I’m working to get better. I’m not sure which composition of mine I want to tackle next (to color and shade), because I want to get better at this. Any suggestions? I’m so glad you like it! It was definitely an interesting and eye-opening experience, as well as excellent practice.

Pixfan: Yeah, and all the while I wondered how the “popular artists” did it… and here comes this great cartoonist and she tells me how to shade and stuff, and it was so freakin easy! The only really hard part for me is getting the shadows in the right place, because I’ve always had a hard time understanding light sources and where shadows would fall and stuff. Oh well. All comes with time and practice I suppose!

Thank you so much, and I definitely will! I have gained more confidence in myself over the past two weeks than I ever have in all five years I’ve been pursuing art and cartooning. Thank you all so very much for your unremitting support! I appreciate every single ounce of it!

little chef

Yay, something new!

So yesterday I decided that I would make up a reference sheet for Lina, and to my surprise I got the whole thing done yesterday - drawing, coloring and all. (Okay, so I had to stay up until 12:00 AM to finish it…) All in all, I am very proud of it, as it is my first actual reference sheet.

(I wasn’t sure whether to post this here or in my non-Pixar art thread. She’s based off of WALL•E, so I assume I can put it here. If it is meant to be in the other thread, let me know and I’ll move it.)

So here she is, Lina Kessler!

Enjoy, and make sure to full-view and read through the artist’s comments as well.

little chef

What a lovably nice character you created, little_chef_eva! I read through all the details, and it’s very interesting. I can see that you’ve put quite some thought into how you wanted this character to be like. Very impressive, especially the fact that you got it all done in one day. I usually take a slow time doing it bit by bit and then I end up putting it off.

You’re most welcome, and that’s great that you’ve received inspiration in more ways than one lately! Knowledge and perseverance are the keys.

As for your colored version of that WALL-E drawing, it’s adorable. I absolutely love the colors, and the shading job you did on it is simple, but tasteful.

Keep up the great work!

– Mitch

Very nice little_chef_eva09! Your latest picture, Lina Kessler, is very nicely done. I also liked her story. Very nicely done!

Very nice reference sheet little_chef_eva09! Is that your real handwriting? It’s beautiful <3

BDD: Yes, each of these characters gets my full attention and devotion, and I see too it that each has a rich background and personality. That - hopefully - should make them all the more appealing. I’m glad you read through the whole thing… a lot of people on dA will simply look at it, fave it, leave no comment, and usually never read through the descriptions. :frowning: So that’s why I try to make mention of it here.

Thanks! I’m so glad you like her! I can assure you you’ll probably be seeing a lot more of her here soon… when I can kick myself back into drawing…!

Mitch: Ho man, you absolutely have no idea of the sweetness I’ve been experiencing these past weeks… I feel… I dunno, I feel like I can take on the world or something. heroic pose I’m glad you think my WALL•E is all right… I was stressing out about the shadows on his shirt, for some reason. Well, if everything looks in order, then I guess there’s nothing to worry about anymore! :stuck_out_tongue: Thanks ever so much for your kind words… they always manage to lift my spirits, and I thank you for that. <3

mo: Well, hello there! Long time no talk! How goes it?

I’m glad you liked Lina too… she’s probably one of my favorite OCs… after Joelinne… and Altair… and Nolan… and … uuughh, there are too many…!!! DDDDD8

Haha, anyways, thanks so much!

woody: The only place my real handwriting is featured is where it says “Fun Fact!”, “Likes”, and “Dislikes…” Unfortunately. Yeah, I wish my handwriting were that beautiful, too. Right now I don’t own a tablet, so I can’t write in things by hand. But someday… someday I will!

The rest of the text you see there is in a font called Greg’s Hand. So it’s not my hand. It’s Greg’s Hand. (Lousy joke is lousy…)

Yeah, it was a lot of fun doing, too! I’m glad it shows.

Recently I’ve been doing a lot of fan art for a friend of mine, and that has consumed a lot of my drawing time. My Pixar fan art will probably be more scarce as well, because I’m really trying to push myself back into drawing my own OCs; many of which have not been drawn for months at a time and really need my artistic attention again. So if you wonder why the art is trickling in instead of pouring, you’ll have your indefinite answer. Thanks so much for your patience with me, as well as your continued support! It is cherished far more than you know…

little chef

Wow. Long time no see in this thread!!

I just got done putting together a rather late birthday present for the wonderful Mitch - who is not only one of the best members on these boards, but my absolute best friend as well. <3 I love ya, hun!!!

So, go have a look-see!!! Mitch’s Birthday Present

Have a great one, Mitch!!! 8DDD
