Yes, they are cavemen.
Okay. Because the one girl looks like a hairy male gorilla. I guess that’s why.
The story looks fine from the marketing, but the payoff seems kind of questionable. Looks too goofy to me.
Am I apparently the only person who is excited for this? I think the designs are a little bit uncanny, but it’s not that bad to me at least.
I think it will be good, there’s no reason for it not to be. I don’t think it’s likely I’ll see it in theaters (not that I don’t want to, we’re just money-tight right now and it’s hard with my schedule), but I think it’s certain I’ll see it this year at least. The only thing that I was a little wacky was how they’re like “I will never do anything new or different!” or “New is always bad! Never not be afraid.” I only thought that it was a little too over-exaggerated, but it probably plays out a lot better in the actual film. I’ll admit the first trailer didn’t have me too excited, but I thought the second one was better. That doesn’t really matter to me since I’ll give the movie a fair chance regardless of presumptions or trailer judgement. I do think I’m more excited for Turbo, though.
“The Croods takes us back to the beginning, to a previously undiscovered era known as the Croodacious - a time when Mother Nature was still experimenting and the flora and fauna we know today hadn’t evolved yet. Trying to find their evolutionary niche are The Croods, a family who must adapt to survive after their cave home is destroyed.”
After reading this on the Amazon page for The Art of The Croods, I’m a little more intrigued.
Malaysian
Malaysia might have 49 stars less than USA, but it has one more stripe!
I’m proud my fellow countryman is getting the big-screen treatment!*
So it’ll be in the end credits? Cool, pixarfan9099! I wonder if it’ll be referenced in the movie (like You Know My Name is in Casino Royale’s orchestral score) or even gets its own song in a pivotal scene (a la Phil Collin’s I Wanna Know in Tarzan).
And Owl City does another end-credit song for an animated movie? I love their official music videos for Wreck-It-Ralph and Legend Of The Guardians (which they also did the end credits for), and if they do another a film-themed MV for Croods, it’ll be a hat trick for Adam Young! **
…
Also, I might be seeing Dreamworks’ next big adventure as early as this weekend! The film reviewer for the newspaper I work for says there’ll be a media preview this Saturday ahead of Singapore’s release on 21 March. If I snag a pass to this, I’ll let y’all know how it goes!
- For the uninitiated, TDIT is a Malaysian who has lived in Indonesia, Australia and now residing in Singapore.
** He is also a fan of film-themed music videos cos’ they remind him of the ones Disney used to make in his childhood.
Ugh, you have such a cool job!
I already have made plans to see this with my friend. Hooooray!
Mom thinks it looks good. But I doubt we would see it in theaters.
Heehee, I’m really moonlighting. The job I’m being paid for is a sub-editor, which mostly involves proofreading, fact-checking and headline-writing. The film and TV show reviews are done in my own time and unpaid, but I hope to build a portfolio to pitch should a future reporter position comes up!
I hope you and your friend have a great time!
Aww… s’okay IV. Save up for Monsters Uni!
…
I’m so excited guys! I’ve been given the go-ahead to attend the media screening tomorrow and I’ll be writing a short review for it on the release week.
I saw pictures of The Croods and thought… “This looks weird”
Then the trailer came out, and I think it look great! Very funny also, I laughed many times from just the trailer.
So guys… I’ve attended the press screening of The Croods. Security was real tight, first time I had to surrender my mobile phone (they placed it in an envelope, stapled it, and gave me a pickup card valet-style) as the film is not even out in the US yet!
Review coming soon.
I’m so jealous!! I’d love to attend something of that sort. I can’t wait to see your opinion!
Chris Sanders has posted some storyboards (mostly unused ones) on his website:
(possible mild spoilers as he mentions where they’ve changed things) I still like his art better than the way the movie turned out… I kind of wish they had captured his style in the CG.
Thanks for sharing that! I love Chris Sander’s artwork. I would of loved to see what this movie would be like in his drawings. (You can see the Sanders influence in the Croods, but in Lilo and Stitch it IS his drawings. I hope I’m explaining that right…)
Yeah I see what you mean. For Lilo and Stitch the animators specifically learned his style, but for The Croods they’ve just used it as a starting point.
EJE: Heehee, if you have reporter friends, you can ask 'em for spare tickets! Some of the press screenings I go to, they don’t even check for IDs, they just leave the cinema hall open for anyone to walk in. I think the security for Croods was particularly tight because it’s not out in any countries yet, while most of the ones I’ve been to had already been released in America (or in the case of Skyfall’s gala premiere, the UK).
And yes, you’re right on the Sanders influence for The Croods. Lilo & Stitch definitely has his fingerprints all over it, but Croods is more like How to train your dragon in the sense that you can see touches of it in the humans and the bulk of his design in the creatures (adorable eyes, huge head, floppy ears).
Nausicaa: Thanks for sharing with us! Having seen the film, it’s interesting to know which scenes made it and which didn’t! I also wish they had gone with Sanders’ design for Eep (she looks so much “sexier” in his drawings!), but I suppose they wanted to go for a more “caveman” look (She not only has Merida’s hair, but the “football head” too! ). They did keep his design for the giant cat, though!
I’ll write a proper review soon and copy paste it here. But in a nutshell, I immensely enjoyed it! <3
I’m afraid that I don’t have any friends of that variety! I’m happy to hear that you pleased yourself.
One thing that I enjoy so much about Lilo and Stitch is the character designs. They are so unconventional, and very interesting to look at. I especially like Nani, because she is more proportionally accurate to an actual woman then virtually all other Disney female leads.
I find a lot of Disney and Pixar female characters have huge heads and needle-thin waists. Like Helen Parr, Violet, Ellie, Rapunzel… I suppose Eve, too? Same with Dreamworks’ Astrid, Roxanne… Princess Fiona in human form is the most “realistic” DW character off the top of my head. Tiana from PATF and the girls from the 90s were well-proportioned and the most beautiful (Think Pocahantas, Megara, Kida, Mulan). Merida is somewhere in between with a “football head” on top of a “broomstick” (a male friend of mine was put off by her design because her face was too round).
Sanders’ characters are more curvy and “sexy”, much like Frank Cho’s (another artist I hugely admire) jungle girls. Or Chel from The Road To El Dorado.
With the final version of The Croods, they went back to the cartoony Pixar/Disney proportions. I think Eep would’ve been way more attractive if they went with Sanders’ design, but her personality is empathetic enough for me.
Yeah. I’m not bashing on the house style of Disney. I like Aurora’s character design, but my lord have you seen that waist? My own drawings of females are more along that line. But I found Sanders’ Nani to be very refreshing change! Not just in Nani’s body proportions, but all the characters were a nice break from the Disney house style.
I’m not familier with Frank Cho!
