I have wondered sometimes how different it would have been if Larry & Steve had been another Cartoon Cartoon series next to the likes of Dexter’s Laboratory. Seth certainly wouldn’t have been as famous, but it would probably have meant that there wouldn’t be four-something shows from him on FOX and that The Simpsons would have still held top spotlight like it did through most of the 90’s (maybe the show’s quality would have held up differently without Family Guy also). Plus we probably wouldn’t see so many comments that Seth is an “unoriginal plagiarist” from people. I’m really trying not to be too hard on Seth with Family Guy cause I know there’s people out there that do like that show, but for some of us there’s just something about it that just… puts you off a bit, you know?
look, Family Guy can sometimes be pretty funny if you turn your brain off and try not to get offended (unlike South Park, FG tries to offend people rather than doing it by accident).
But McFarlane should NOT touch The Flintstones.
You know what’d be neat? If Hannah-Barbera gave their properties to the ONE person who can do good with theml John K.! His Yogi Bear and Jetsons cartoons were awesome…especially the Yogi Bear ones.
On the bright side, this will be fascinating to watch from a business perspective. I’d like to see how this all plays out for the network and the viewers, both casual and hardcore.
MacFarlane’s productions sometimes hit comic good (though it’s increasingly rare for the latest seasons), but his brand of humour does NOT go well with ‘The Flintstones’.
I suggest Lauren Faust or Craig McCracken should get the deal. Who’s with me?
Craig McCracken is the guy who created The Powerpuff Girls and Foster’s Home for Imaginary Friends on Cartoon Network. He has a DeviantART account now: http://cmcc.deviantart.com/
Don’t know who Lauren Faust is (or I probably just forgot her work)…
I looked her up, she was a story board artist for both shows. She also worked on Kid’s next Door, and a show named The Maxx and some movies. She is now working on My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic
Funny thing is, I always felt that Craig McCracken’s shows tend to get a little confused with the two from Genndy Tartakovsky (Dexter’s Lab and Samurai Jack) because they’ve both worked on one another’s shows and they sometimes look like they have a similar art style and stuff.
John K. has done wonders with Hannah-Barbera characters before, and he’s the one person I’d trust to take on any of the franchises. He adds a new flair without insulting the original. Boo Boo Runs Wild, for example, added the psychodrama elements from Ren & Stimpy to the Yogi Bear universe, a universe obviously not meant to be scary and “deep”, but it still felt respectful of the original cartoons.
If you mean Craig, I just wonder why. Is it because you didn’t like Powerpuff Girls?
Well I know John loves Hanna-Barbera also and knows more on them than Seth would, so you have a point. Though he might do it like this Jetsons cartoon he made where George and Jane look really psychotic: The Jetsons - The Best Son - YouTube
You can even see his version of Flintstones at the end of it. I’m not questioning John’s talent at all because he is a great artist, just that I always got more charm out of the original style from Hanna-Barbera. But I do agree from what I remember of his Yogi Bear shorts that John can still capture the original style very well.
This is kind of a related subject, but has anyone seen the new style they have for the Fruity/Cocoa Pebbles boxes?
If it were animated with that kind of look, I would love to watch it.
EJE: I used to be a fan of Powerpuff Girls as a kid, but now I realised it was pointlessly sadistic. I discovered Foster’s a few years ago and MLP:FIM recently, and I still love ‘em! Have you tried watching the latter two, EJE? I think they’re very positive-minded cartoons, especially MLP (Fosters tends to have the slow-tension’ gags like Powerpuff, Spongebob and Dexter’s Lab that might get grating after while)!
I’m not sure if Flintstones should be resurrected, but shows like the recent ‘Looney Tunes Show’ and ‘MLP’ were relative successes. Others, like the Carebears, weren’t. We’ll never know till we actually see a ‘pitch clip’.
