Disney to feature its first animated black princess

The Walt Disney Co. has started production on an animated musical fairy tale called "The Frog

Princess," which will be set in New Orleans and feature the Walt Disney Studio’s first black princess.

The company unveiled the plans at its annual shareholders’ meeting in New Orleans this week.

John Lasseter, chief creative officer for Disney and the Disney-owned unit Pixar Animation Studios, said

the movie would return to the classic hand-drawn animation process, instead of using computer animation that has

become the industry standard. He called the film “an American fairy tale.”

The movie will be

scored by Randy Newman, who also wrote the music for Disney’s “Toy Story,” “A Bug’s Life,”

“Toy Story 2,” “Monsters, Inc.” and “Cars.”

John Musker and Ron Clements,

who co-directed “The Little Mermaid,” “Aladdin,” and “Hercules,” will co-direct the

movie. The pair also wrote the story for the film.

Disney said its new animated princess - Maddy - will

be added to its collection of animated princesses used at the company’s theme parks and on consumer products.

The film is set for release in 2009.

Yeah-- I’m excited too! :smiley: It’s funny, I think this one was at first planned

for 2010, but because of the problems with Rapunzel, (I’m guessing that’s the reason) it’s now one year

closer.

My one problem so far with it is this whole “black princess” thing. Don’t get me

wrong, I’m fine with it, I just don’t want this movie to become too pollitically correct.

yeah, that’s my only worry too (that and the

whole Randy Newman thing)

now, I’m NOT racist or anything (my cousin is african american) I just

don’t want it getting… well, like Gassduude said.

but I’m glad 2-D is back, I always loved

that medium, it contained a hand made, artistic quality that 3-D lacks.

I agree with all of you. I am happy to see 2D comming back again. It is a good way to show

that any kind of story can be told in any way. I believe this 2D movie will make people remember how good 2D

films were, and maybe some might even come back.

Jennifer Hudson is one of the top contenders for the lead role! She has to voice this

character!!! :smiley:

I too wasnt

too sure how the public respond, to that either, but now that I’ve seen MTR I’m quite sure it’s going to be

amazing, how could it be anything less with John there.

I definatly think this mvie is going to help Disney get

back on track. I think Disney lost the trust of alot of people, “making all these bad films” I dont

think I have the say as to what movie is bad or horrible, because I know how much work goes into each one… But

MTR is showing promise for a posstive future

The first black princess is I think partly a publicity stunt, to get people talking about it

– it’s about time there was one though. It’s unfortunate that Disney hadn’t thought to introduce different

races of princesses earlier, really – but with Jasmine, and Mulan also counting as a princess in some toy ranges

(why?!), I don’t think it’s as big a deal as they say – the first black people in a Disney feature (actually

featured drawn as black people) were the muses in Hercules, I think, which imo was pretty late in coming along

too.

I bet you ten disney dollars they have Beyonc? or similar actress/singer in the role!

And then there’s of course Pocahontas. She’s the daughter of the chief so she’s technically a princess

(although not in the sense of a traditional one, since no one goes around calling her Princess Pocahontas).

Exactly. Did anybody see that

headshot of the Princess? Amazing. It just didn’t look like the Disney we’ve been seeing recently…it felt,

well, like Pixar.

Aww, my 8th grade year only ends on May 23rd! :angry:

I really want to see this movie. I’m glad Disney is bringing back 2D, as the only 3D movies I like are all Pixar movies. (Although I do want to see Horton Hears a Who and Meet the Robinsons)

I’m going to take a shot at working on this film, although I can’t promise anything as of late. However, one should not count his apples before he eats them… :wink:
