The Future of LAIKA Studios

Alright, well, I’ve been really worrying about this studio after Henry Selick left it. First, they had a brilliant, brilliant start with Coraline as their first feature film… seriously, I don’t think anyone was expecting a movie that big (on a tiny scale!) from a brand new studio. They also Co-produced Corpse Bride with Warner Brothers.

I remember reading a while back on /slashfilm or something like that that Jan Pinkava was doing a new movie for them, it had to do with a future where internet dating has perfect matches but a man has refused his match. Sounded pretty weird but very original at the same time. Unfortunately it looks like it was scrapped, and Wikipedia is now telling me these are the studios’ future films:

  • Here Be Monsters! (2011)
  • Paranorman (2012)

There are rumors Selick might be attached to one of them… if so, that’s a good thing. We need more geniuses like Selick onboard these days.

What do you think?

I thought Selick was back with Disney and there was a studio being built for him on Pixar’s campus.

I still need to see Coraline!

I read somewhere that they have 6-8 projects in pre-production right now. I think they might be a little too ambitious.

As theoutsider1983 said, Selick is working on a new studio near Pixar.

The Jan Pinkava movie was not that script. That was a script that floated around for a while, but never got picked up, I think. The writer of that screenplay is working with Pinkava on a totally unrelated project.

I think Coraline was amazing (Yup, I finally got down to seeing it). If that is any indication of the quality we can expect from Laika, I’m hoping we see more from this studio.

Oh, duh! facepalm Totally forgot about that.

Holy COW! :open_mouth: 6 to 8 projects is ambitious indeed! Geez, I don’t think even Pixar has that many going on right now…

I still have yet to see Coraline(don’t kill me), and I’ve never heard of this studio. I feel like I live under a rock or something… :open_mouth:

Eh, it’s okay, they’re not that well-known of a name right now, honestly.
Though you should get to watching Coraline sometime…

CORALINE is an amazing movie; the stop-motion animation is intricately detailed and perfectly realized, and the story is alternatingly dark, creepy, sad, funny, and all-in-all very engaging. It’s one of the best animated features I’ve seen in years.

Coraline is one of the best animated features I’ve seen that uses Stop-motion.

If you have Netflix it should be on there. Regarding on the future of Lakia, if any of these projects are true. We might as well wait and see what becomes of them.

I know she’s seen it now
