I don’t know if this was posted already but I recently found this really interesting article on Total Film.com about the history and background story of how Toy Story 3 was created. What I found especially interesting was their phrase on page one

But Toy Story’s latest outing wasn’t always in Pixar’s hands, and while we suspect if the company truly had its way that the sequel wouldn’t even exist, they have taken over responsibility for making it work.

So, was PIXAR intent with not continuing the series after 2, or for that matter even 1 (since Disney kinda forced them to create 2 originally as a DtoV cheapquel)?

Yeah, Pixar and Disney got into an argument over making it that almost split them. Disney created “Circle 7 Animation Studios” which was making the movie, but when John Lasseter took over he shut it down and moved it back to Pixar, where an entirely new script was written.
