Hello everyone, I’m back from the dead, and just in time for All Hallow’s ‘EEEVAAA’! In case anyone was wondering where I vanished to for the past month, here’s what happened: I got my first job!

It’s at a coupon magazine company, every issue has vouchers advertising deals and promotions by local businesses and a few ‘big fish’ like fast-food chains and home and hardward depots. It’s a dream come true; every issue for each of their suburbs features their clients on the cover and inner spread in a movie/TV show parody, like ‘Jurrasic Price’, ‘Savatar’ or ‘Coo-Pan, the Bargainarian’. They’re usually financial-related puns, but it’s kinda fun to recreate a movie poster and stick the client’s heads on the bodies of the characters (we’re careful to use stock images, because the company has been sued before).

I got the job through my best friend; he was already working at the company, and he found out that one of the senior designers was resigning on short notice, and there would be an emergency recruitment drive to fill the vacancy. He put in a good word for me and his housemate (who also happens to be my friend), and forwarded our resumes to the boss. We both went to the interview and found out there was a full-time and part-time position. I must have impressed the boss more than my friend, because she gave me the full-time gig instead of her.

It’s a really great work environment, all my colleagues are helpful and friendly, and I even get to pick my desktop wallpaper (I considered wearing My Little Ponies before chickening out to car wallpapers). Yeah, there’s no overtime pay, or holiday leave, I’m not making movies or writing stories (although the boss personally wants me to write the contents page film synopsis, which I get a kick out of), and I can’t decorate my workplace as extensively as a Pixarian, but it’s the next best thing to Emeryville, I guess. And there’s nothing more satisfying than seeing money going into my personal salary bank account every fortnight, and knowing that I earned it and I can spend it anyway I like.

I’ve also been busy running errands - setting up the aformentioned salary account (so my parents can’t touch my cash, although they’re still giving me allowance for the time being), finding a superannuation fund (I went with a savings account with the same bank instead), applying for my temporary visa (which is a real pain cos’ I have to courier documents to government agents and constantly liase with my migration agent), buying a brand-new bike, celebrating my birthday with my friends at a French-Vietnamese restaurant, and watching a couple of movies in theatres like Lion King in 3D, Real Steel, Captain America, and Contagion (the first two impressed me, the last two were disappointing).

As I work 9-5 five days a week (sometime even staying back if we have a print deadline) and I’m frequently go out after-work with my friends and colleagues, my free time is even more precious than before. Remember I said there will come a time when I’ll visit here less often? Well, I’m afraid that day has come.

But don’t despair Planeteers, I’m not leaving this place anytime soon (unless you really want me to leave, in which case, I’m sorry to disappoint you.). I’ll just check in here about once a week to check everything’s going fine, share the latest news about Pixar and animated films, and participate in the usual lively discussions/debates. The rest of my leisure time (after overtime, going out with friends, and errands) will be devoted to catching up on TV shows and movies (I still haven’t watched the new season of Five-0!), and creating fanwork, which I’m really behind on.

You can still find me on Twitter, Youtube, Tumblr, deviantART, and for the few who looked me up, on Facebook. And the office will be shutting down over the Christmas break and I’ll be going back to Singapore, so I’ll have more leisure time!

Meanwhile, why not have a look at my shiny new bike? I got it for $99 from Coles, a department store. The rear light is actually a police siren toy that shrieks as loud as a burglar alarm. I even carry it into my apartment like another skinny guy who got his first job in one of my favourite Pixar movies!

Also, check out an awesome Pixar-themed cover I found in the company archives, and see what I got for my birthday (It’s Cars 2-related)!
