The Iron Giant

I looked all over PP for an Iron Giant topic, and I was surprised with the lack of them!
So, here it is.

I think it’s a great movie, very sentimental and beautifully animated.

Ooo, I love these movies. Not a big childhood film for me, though - more like one of the good ones I never purchased and hoped for it to show up on TV. I bought the DVD a while back … I should watch it again when I get the chance.

My favorite scene was when [spoil]Hogarth got hyped up on coffee[/spoil]. xD

It’s a great movie. Does anyone remember when Cartoon Network would play it over and over again all day the day after Thanksgiving? I think they only did it twice.

There was an Iron Giant discussion a while ago, but it was sent to the Archives.

I love that scene. Brad Bird actually animated it. He said himself on the commentary.

I actually remember that. That was when Sheila and I first saw the movie.

Haven’t seen this film yet, but I want to.

I do know that it’s directed by Brad Bird (he directed The Incredibles and Ratatouille)

Truth be told, I wasn’t all that keen on The Iron Giant when it was first released, nor was I extremely thrilled about The Incredibles upon its initial theatrical debut. It’s almost as if Mr. Bird’s films are/were so fantastic that I couldn’t comprehend the “geniusness” of them at the time… (snigger)

I love both films now, of course, perhaps The Iron Giant more so than The Incredibles. The production itself is wonderful – another heartfelt and comedic masterpiece by Brad Bird. I enjoy watching it now much more than I did when I first saw it in cinemas.

My favorite bit has to be the moment when… [spoil]Dean dumps his coffee upon hearing Hogarth’s plea of, “He needs food…and shelter.”[/spoil] :stuck_out_tongue:

Oh I loved Iron Giant. Brad Bird was a genious in directing this. THe first time I watched it, I thought it was one of the funiest things I have ever seen.

In that case you should see it asap. I’m not saying it’s the best animated film ever but it’s great. The ending is pretty cool too.

I just saw it over a week ago. It was really good, but I still like Incredibles and Ratatouille more.

I can agree with you thereRMSH. My order goes TI, Rat. then IG.

I think it’s overrated. I watched it again after seeing Ratatouille, just to make sure I wasn’t missing something, but… nope. It’s still not spectacular.

I think movies that have a message about war usually get better reviews, even if they aren’t better movies. Anyone remember how Antz got better reviews than A Bug’s Life? The acting in the Iron Giant was nothing like the acting in The Incredibles, and the story was pretty predictable. We’ve all seen a lot of animated movies that tell us we can choose between good and evil. It was a good movie, but if there’s any genius of it, I’m missing it. Maybe one of you could point it out to me.

Has anyone noticed that Brad Bird uses a lot of red haired characters? Hogarth is red haired, the CIA guy is red haired, Syndrome is red haired, Elastigirl is red haired, Dash is red haired, Linguini is red haired. Tim Burton also creates a lot of characters that have his hair: Black, long, and never combed. Maybe it’s something cartoon directors like to do.

HAHAHA red hair.

I thought the animation was pretty good.

Ha-ha. I think that Brad Bird just likes the 50s era (or… was it the 60s?). Heheh.

Not all of the characters you mentioned were red heads. I know Dash was a blondie, and Helen had auburn hair.

At the time it came out I was a kid, and had to choice between seeing The Iron Giant or Inspector Gadget in theaters. I voted for Inspector Gadget. cringes

The marathon runs on Cartoon Network boosted its popularity a lot. It’s one of the best films to study animation from in terms of gestures and facial expressions, kind of like Surf’s Up. Oh man, I always crack up at the [spoil]Kent Mansley montage of searching for Hogarth on a laxative![/spoil]

FG - One of the best scenes of the whole movie! Everytime I watch it I promise myself that if somebody makes me mad, if I get the chance, I’ll do that to them! :smiling_imp:

When I saw that part funnygirl, I never really got what laxatives did. Now I get it, and I find it totally funny. It would be a nice joke to pull on someone.

I watched this film when I was like 8 or 9 years old, it had one tragic ending.

It was tragic, but everything turned out alright when the giants parts started reconstucting itself.

Oh my gosh! You just reminded me; I’m laughing so hard right now! My bro and I were fortunate enough to watch this with our mother, so when Hogarth started [spoil]sprinkling the Coco-Lax on his sundae as a “mudslide”, we licked our lips and mom started laughing. “What, Mom?” “Oh, I can’t believe he’s doing that.” “What? It looks good! We should do that!” “Lax means laxative. (we question her) Laxatives make you poop.”[/spoil]

Ever since then we’ve always brought up [spoil]Coco-Lax[/spoil] as an effective means of detaining someone or exacting revenge. And NO, it would not be a nice joke – it would be a nasty one! You guys!
