I saw Toy Story 3 on DVD yesterday (not gonna lie… still amazing!) and at the ending I noticed something I hadn’t before, which put me in a state of awe in how amazingly genius it is. At the end of Toy Story 3, as the camera looks up towards the clouds above the house, it freeze frames at clouds. The best part about this is, it is the EXACT SAME formation of clouds seen on Andy’s wallpaper in the opening sequence of Toy Story 1.
Sorry if any of you have already noticed this, I just thought it was pure genius, so I decided to share it.
EDIT: Alright they don’t look EXACTLY alike, the cloud shapes are, here they are if you need a visual of what I am talking about:
That was a Touching end to the movie It ended like the Movie began with te clouds i have to admit i noticed it in the theatres And It Touched me deeply
If you look at it another way, it ends the same way it starts, with the clouds form the imagination sequence in the opening, which also mimic’s Toy Story’s opening.
In some way I agree with this, but the part I don’t agree with is that since it is “ending where it started”, it is theoretically the end of imagination? So the toys are dead in the eyes of Andy? Because they are very much alive…
I definetly noticed this at midnight on June 18th, and it added another round of weeping in the theaters with that huge little nostalgia explosion.
I get what you’re saying, Dinoco - it ends how it starts, somewhat. That shot of the clouds was the shot that brought us into this world - this three part, 15 year epic saga - and the final shot of the clouds in the sky takes us out of the world.
I remember reading Jim Hill’s report from the ShoWest screening, and I didn’t know how to interpret it. Hill said the last thing we saw in Toy Story 3 was the first thing we saw in the original Toy Story. I thought this meant that Andy was to play with his toys like in the first movie’s opening. While this prediction came true, I didn’t know what to think of it from reading the report. And then, I finally realized what Jim Hill meant when I saw that final shot.
Though really, Jim Hill could’ve been referring to either the clouds or Andy playing with his toys. But he was probably just talking about the clouds.
When I first read the Jim Hill report, I thought that the last shot would be Bonnie’s wallpaper, which would also symbolize the change that has went by…but it would’ve been harder to integrate. I’m happy with the current version, though. It’s very touching and effective.
