The Pirates! Band of Misfits (2012)

Hugh Grant, starring in his first animated role, is the luxuriantly bearded Pirate Captain – a boundlessly enthusiastic, if somewhat less-than-successful, terror of the High Seas. With a rag-tag crew at his side (Martin Freeman, Brendan Gleeson, Russell Tovey, and Ashley Jensen), and seemingly blind to the impossible odds stacked against him, the Captain has one dream: to beat his bitter rivals Black Bellamy (Jeremy Piven) and Cutlass Liz (Salma Hayek) to the much coveted Pirate Of The Year Award. It’s a quest that takes our heroes from the shores of exotic Blood Island to the foggy streets of Victorian London. Along the way they battle a diabolical queen (Imelda Staunton) and team up with a haplessly smitten young scientist (David Tennant), but never lose sight of what a pirate loves best: adventure!

I’m really looking forward to Aardman’s return to feature-length stop motion. From the synopsis this sounds like a heck of a way to do it.

This reminds me a lot of Monkey Island, which was supposed to get an animated film adaptation but was unfortunately canceled. That combined with the fact that it’s from Aardman makes me really excited about it.

I actually laughed out loud, which trailers rarely make me do. Definitely could be one of the best animated movies of 2012.

Yeah, between this and ParaNorman, it looks like Brave will have to earn its Oscar next year.

Just saw the trailer and I thought it looked very good! You just got to love Aardman. Like tribefan said, I think Brave will have a tough competition for best animated movie along with Dreamwork’s Madagascar 3 (looks awful so far), and possibly Wreck-it Ralph (not that good). There might be a couple more films that can compete. Just not sure which ones.

This movie looks fantastic! Was that a portrait of Queen Victoria? Does that mean the Queen that yelled ‘I hate pirates’ was Victoria?

Also, lol at the use of Blitzkrieg Bop in the teaser. Reminds me of the Jimmy Neutron movie.

Everybody knows there’s 2 trailers, right? The British one (The Pirates! In an Adventure With Scientists!) and the American one (The Pirates! Band of Misfits). I personally prefer the British one, just because its a musical trailer

I’m really excited for this movie because I’ve read 3 of the books in the series it’s based on, and they’re all hilarious. Plus, Aardman is a fantastic studio so I’m sure this should turn out well.

Funnily enough, The Pirates! In an Adventure with Scientists is the proper title It’s named after the first book in the series. The four books are titled, as follows:

The Pirates! In an Adventure with Scientists
The Pirates! In an Adventure with Whaling
The Pirates! In an Adventure with Communists
The Pirates! In an Adventure with Napoleon

I heartily reccomend them to anyone looking for a good laugh “Band of Misfits” is an alright title, but I think the original sounds more fun, haha.

Wait… are you saying you like Sorcerer’s Stone better? Or Philosopher’s Stone? Because PS makes more sense, as it was a pre-existing concept and Nicholas Flamel is associated with the object under that title.
