The Planets

What’s

your guys opinionon the recent deabte on Planet Pluto??

Personally, I’m not liking the fact they think

they can strip the status “Planet” off of Pluto. Not that Pluto would notice (or even care, it’s just

rock), but I’m still irked.

It’s still a

planet, it’s just a Dwarf planet.

…I think.

Astronomy, WHOO!

Personally, I’m of the opinion that Pluto should not be considered

a planet. I think one of the “rules” in the planet definition should be that all the planets should

rotate around the sun on the same plane, which Pluto most assuredly does not. And the Ceres thing kind of gets

me too, a little bit; just as I think considering an obvious Kuiper Belt object (Pluto) as a planet, I don’t

really fully agree with including an obvious asteroid (Ceres) in a group that otherwise contains only Kuiper Belt

objects. I don’t know nearly as much about that part of it, but it still gets me a little bit.

I know

that if I’m saying this it had to have been brought up by the astronomers and something wrong found with it, but

I still think that there has to be some non-confusing definition that keeps it all nice and tidy… Just eight

planets, asteroid belt, and Kuiper belt, please!

I just saw the story about this on NBC.

It may be classified a dwarf planet

now, but it’s still a planet to me. Would you say that a dwarf (midget) isn’t a person? That may have sounded

weird, but that’s exactly what’s going through my mind. :stuck_out_tongue:

~~=oP

What about all of those other planets that they want to

add?

They’ll all be sent off to

live in the Galaxy of Misfit Planets, of course. :unamused:

I dunno. I mean, yes, Pluto is small and a bit

of a nonconformist. But my Happy Hippie side is more inclined to think that this sort of behaviour should be

encouraged, not oppressed. Basically, I can’t think of a reason for why it was okay for Pluto to be a planet

for so many years, and now they’re deciding to downgrade it. Why bother, you know?

Pluto will always

be a planet to me.

Pluto and the other planets they were

talking about adding are now classified as “dwarf planets” but the term “dwarf planet” does

not mean that it’s just a different kind of planet. They are no longer considered planets at all.

My

professor today said he was going to give us a pop quiz and gave us just long enough to get scared and then asked

his question: “How many planets are there in the solar system?” and we all started laughing.

I

think Pluto should not be considered the same kind of planet as the other eight, but it and the others should

have an in-between planet classification…which I guess they accomplished pretty well with the "dwarf

planet" term.

I don’t like it! I like Pluto!!

Lol… I was so confused when I first read this topic… I

was like huh? Planet Pluto?? Is that like Pizza Planet??? Heheh…

But carry on…

Sniff I think it’s sad Pluto isnt a planet anymore! Seeing that 1 of my fav

characters Setsuna Meioh/Sailor Pluto is named after that planet v.v And Setsuna was always cold and lonely just

like Pluto…Sighs

Well, the announcement has come down from on high: Dwarf planet 2003 UB313, once

nicknamed “Xena,” has officially been named Eris, after the Greek goddess of discord. Eris’ moon,

unoffically called “Gabrielle,” is now officially Dysnomia, a Greek word which means

“lawlessness,” which is the name of Eris’ daughter.

Points to those who can spot the Xena

pun… it’s not all that hidden. Oh, and Pluto should be reinstated as a planet, too. Having 12 planets was fun,

even if it were only for a few days.

I can understand why

they did this, but I think I’ll always automatically consider Pluto a planet just out of habit. And Pluto is my

starsign’s planet, so that kind of ruins things now too.

Same here. Pluto is cool. Even a Disney character is named after it. Speaking of which, what

about that “tenth” planet? Did people consider that a non-planet also?

It was

Eris that was considered the “tenth planet,” until there was the mass shuffling of planets. Then, using

the 12 planet system, it was the 12th. (Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Ceres, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune,

Pluto and Charon -a double planet- and The Planet Now Known As Eris.) Under the current system, it is now a dwarf

planet.

Yeah - I like how they name it after the goddess of

discord - very appropriate.

Yeah that whole "Discord started the Trojan

War/Eris started the planetary war" thing was pretty cool.
