The Setting of a Pixar film

I’ve always felt that before starting work on an animated film, the filmmakers research upon the setting of the movie- they want to cover new ground, a new world.
See, TS1,2 took us to toys, ABL was about insects, MI about Monsters, FN was set in the sea, TI was about superheros, Cars was about…well…cars, and so on.

I think that they keep choosing unique topics, because they offer fantastical new vistas, breathtaking visuals, cool new concept art, and fresh sources of humour and dialogue.

Pixar is the only studio that gets maximum mileage from the ‘setting,’ with the help of a terrific plot.
Studios like Blue Sky and Dreamworks generally screw up their films, because the premise, however promising, is ruined by a flimsy storyline and lackluster narrative.

So, what new settings and topics is Pixar, in your opinion, yet to cover?

I was thinking about a film about Heaven and Hell. You know, with angels and devils, harps, pitchforks, pearly gates, and so on. It could make for quite an interesting, action-packed, even touching story, especially if death and the afterlife are involved (has anyone read the wish list by Eoin colfer?)

I’m still thinking…

Hmmm, that is a very good question. I would like to see maybe a mixture of monsters, magic, and mighty warriors in a future Pixar Film, but we shall see.

Monsters, magic, and warriors?

Hey, we might get that in The Bear and the Bow!

Anything to do with the Ancient Greeks, Romans or Egyptians would be pretty cool.

Aliens, dogs, and farm animals, which are my ideas for Pixar films (go to the Other Animation section of the boards and look for the topic "My Movie Ideas and VOTE!!) My films’ descriptions are in the topic.

A new setting? Hm. . . I’m gonna have to flex my creative mind with this one.

Maybe another country like Japan or England or something like that. Just a new country so that us Americans can have a more international experience. Hm. . . International. Why does that sound familiar? Oh yeah, Cars 2. That one was not on purpose!

Since that’s already happening, maybe something like ghosts. I’d love to see how Pixar tackles ghosts. I’m a bit of a Danny Phantom fan, so I like ghosts. I’d like to see Pixar’s version of a ghost.

As long as it’s not like Casper, LightningAndDocshudders. :shake:

I was watching “The Black Cauldron” the other day and thought wouldn"t it be nice if pixar made a fantasy pic with magic, dragons, demons and stuff in that genre but gear it more toward adults like “The Dark Crystal” was. Not necessarily redoing the look or feel of the animation, but at the same time changing the overall impact of the movie. That’s not to say I wana see em go so far as to look like anime that was done for resident evil or final fantasy movies.

humm that prob doesn’t make a whole lotta sense o well .

as far as a new setting how about a bunch of jr. high students that play d&d and get sucked into the game?

Shoot! that was already done on the D&D cartoon series!
I stink at this!! :frowning:

I agree, I’m actually quite surprised that Pixar haven’t done a ‘swords and sorcery’ style film yet, we can see on the Wall•e DVD that there are quite a lot of ahem geeks working there, so they’re probably (like myself) quite into Dungeons and Dragons. But I suppose it is hardly an original premise, but it would be interesting to see Pixars take on the subject.

Apart from that ghosts or the afterlife would make for an interesting film, I can see Pixar getting really philosophical with a setting like that.

The Bear and the Bow will cover the fantasy fairy tale genre, Irish setting.

Newt… I don’t know what new setting it will have, except science labs.

Dungeons and dragons, Swords and sandals, Sorcery and mystery I don’t see Pixar do them anytime soon. While very diverse, Pixar films happen in modern time with The Bear and the Bow the first exception. Maybe it will have bits and pieces of them. Also, their animated films are G-PG so when they do ghost/afterlife/heaven and hell it will be the first PG-13 Pixar film, no need to hold it back.

Don’t know how they’ll work into the Pixar canon but 1906 will be historical epic and John Carter of Mars will be sci-fi fantasy, both I believe will be PG-13 and hopelessly want them to pass the development stages right now.

It seems all the locations in the world have been done. KFP did a good job on the Chinese settings and palettes. While awful, Madagascar African vista is gorgeous. The tropical island of Surf’s Up, the Antarctic sea of Happy Feet… maybe not on par with Pixar stories, the CG imagery of those films give Pixar a real competition. Not that Pixar can’t beat them if they ever go those places, because a Pixar story with the polar bears would be awesome.

What’s left? Mediterranean? It’d be cool if Pixar makes a film in Greece or Italy, ancient time or not.
