The WALL•E Movie Discussion Thread

I heard Disney/Pixar will be pushing for Wall-e to get best picture, which they usually don’t do for animated movies. Anybody else here this?

I’d read, before seeing WALL-E, that Pixar expected to get an award for each film, until Rat didn’t get it, which they blamed on Disney’s lack of sufficient advertising. Thus, they took advertising into their own hands and pushed WALL-E as hard as they possibly could, to ensure that it wouldn’t be overlooked for an award. You’ve got to admit, WALL-E is everywhere, while Rat wasn’t nearly so much.

Someone mentioned this in another topic.

Notice how [spoil]Wall•E’s “done charging” sound is the mac start-up sound?[/spoil]

Well, maybe the other robots failed because [spoil]they were all running Windows Vista[/spoil]

Sorry, Leon. Someone else beat you to that joke.

Ratatouille got SO many awards, I think you’re confusing it with merchandising. But yeah, I heard that too, about Pixar doing its own marketing, who knows…

I hadn’t heard that joke before, and I think it’s funny. XD

You heard PIXAR is supporting the best picture idea? Where?

Here’s an observation I’ve never heard anybody talk about, but I didn’t want to start my own thread.

Has anybody seen Triplets of Belleville, that French animated film that was nominated for Animated Feature Oscar in 2003?

There are so many similarities between WALL-E and Triplets of Belleville! Without giving too many spoilers, both films are mostly dialogue free and animated. Both films have similar plot points, and I mean REALLY similar (Watch them and you will see). Most of all, both films have some kind of social commentary on consumerism. Andrew Stanton has even mentioned that he chose “Hello, Dolly!” over the original swing music that he was going to choose because he didn’t want to be criticized for copying Triplets of Belleville.

I think both films are genius and I love them both.

Interesting point you’ve made! I might have to look it up sometime and see about the similarities.

I finally got to see it.

I. LOVED. THIS. MOVIE.

Here’s a full review:

“WALL—E”: A Cautionary Tale that takes no Caution in Telling a Great Story!
Wall-E: A+

It seems to me that Pixar almost always gets better and better with every film. ‘WALL—E,’ the animation studio’s first leap into the sci-fi genre is no exception.
For the first third of the film, WALL—E is shown cleaning up the trash of mankind left all over the earth (the film is set about 700 years in the future). It is also revealed that the other WALL—E bots have shut down and he’s the last one still working to clean the earth. Here, he is an animated Charlie Chaplin as he discovers old knick-knacks and relics. Everything he does on his own is sweetly hilarious, but some may tire of WALL—E’s cuteness. Just when his adorability becomes mechanical, EVE arrives.
EVE’s directive is to find new living things on earth, so her initial reaction to WALL—E is to ignore him. But when he shows her his collection of human antiques, she starts to develop a personality complimentary to his. In the next few days, EVE finds a real plant. The next half of the film includes many surprise twists and turns, so I won’t spoil the rest of it for you.
The music by Thomas Newman is moving and at the same time, it makes the film a lot of fun! And in the way of sound, the sound effects are top-notch and add new believability to this fanciful story. And it’s Pixar, so of course the animation rocks! But what totally trumps the animation is the camera angles and very soulful character development in EVE.
Another great aspect of this movie is Fred Willard. Although his part isn’t all that big (he is in the live-action commercials for BuyNLarge, the WalMartish corporation that essentially buys out the world), it is essential to the message of the movie and honestly, it’s one of his better performances.
So, Pros: good for the little ones, great filmmaking, and a surprisingly great message. Cons: the cuteness might annoy you, but whenever it gets repetitive, it stops itself and gets good. Honestly, this should be the next animated film nominated for Best Picture. Hey, a guy can dream, can’t he? “WALL—E” is Rated G and 97 minutes long.

oh, and hey Pixelated! I’m back!

Welcome back TS2.

Wow. Great review. Good angles on many things.
Its good to hear that there are cons. Nothing can be perfect.

I plan on watching Wall-E several times in the future. My first watching of it, it felt extremely…jumbled about it. (When I get woken up earlier than I would like, it’s like the world gets slower. Took a long nap before the movie, slept past my intended screening time, and had to take a later one.) Just like I did with Ratatouille. (minus the “the world is slow” feeling)

I have so many things I want to talk about, but I won’t speak of most of them until I’ve watched it again.

What would you consider the best part of the movie? For me, it’s “Desperate Eve”.

my favorite part of the film is when [spoil]she’s trying to get WALL-E to gain back his personality, and also when the Captain is fighting the AUTO wheel.[/spoil]

Thanx 4 the comments!

That part really brought tears to my eyes.
[spoil]It really shows the love someone can have, and for EVE, Wall-E became her everything[/spoil]
That was sappy tear

I always wondered how WALL•E [spoil]has a recorder/player installed on him. Is it part of his original design or did he install it on himself somehow?[/spoil]

Uh, wow, that’s a difficult question to ask…

For me, I really do enjoy [spoil]the opening sequence. It’s so dramatic, seeing Earth like that…And then I also like the bit when EVE and WALL-E are dancing in space.[/spoil]

I wondered that too.

It looks to be designed for him. I’m not sure as to the original intention of putting a music player on a robot… maybe they wanted the humans to hear it when they got back…?

(100th Post!!)

[spoil] I thought it was maybe a marketing gimmick from BnL or something like that. I can just here the commercial now “Also comes equipped with a casset player!” Maybe they thought if they designed them as cute little robots that also listen to music, the humans would feel a little better about leaving Earth in their hands or something. [/spoil]

I dunno, just a theory. <.< >.>
