I know, I just feel like the crash still affected the entire company and as a fan of their work I kind of feel obligated to show my concern for them. I’ll also bundle up a couple of plush roses for the captain and his crew as well.
This is somewhat off topic, but is anyone else frustrated by the fact that there are not one, but two different non-TSC Rex toys that have a working jaw that opens and closes, but the TSC one doesn’t due to “safety reasons”?
One of the toys here, the Imaginext electronic Rex:
Note that both of these are toys are widely available and aimed at younger kids, who are the only ones that would require a safety precaution on a toy, and yet the mouth hinge works, whereas the Collection Rex, which is only sparsely available and targeted at older collectors has a non-functional hinge. Seems somewhat backwards to me as far as “safety reasons” would be concerned.
It might be more complicated that simply having a hinged jaw, the teeth could be too sharp. notice on one of them the teeth are much rounder than they should be. I cant see the other one’s teeth so I’m not sure about that one, but I think they had to choose between relatively sharp and accurate teeth and a hinged jaw. because if you had the TSC teeth clamp down on a kids hand it could hurt. these are probably softer/duller in some way or another.
Lotso is off scale for sure. In the sunnyside trailer when talking to Woody at eye level he is stooping slightly. That would make the Thinkway Lotso out by a few inches at best guess. It’s not just the height either, he isn’t bulky enough. He is a large bear.
Although Thinkway have data from Pixar, we know they don’t utilise it 100%. Woodys thick body, Rexs jaw, Mr Ps legs etc. There is a compromise on every figure/toy it would seem. The only reason I can think of for Lotso is one of cost. What parent will pay more than $50 for a stuffed toy. He isn’t exactly a Steiff is he. The bigger he is the more the cost.
My collection is based more on Andys toys anyway. I will get Bullseye, Jessie and Slinky dog from Tyler before I consider a version of Lotso now. He is just much of a compromise right now.
Just wanted to point this out, since I’ve never seen it mentioned on here anywhere, but Disney Store had an exclusive Rex figure with a moving jaw a few months ago. It’s way too small to be in scale, but it’s quite accurate otherwise, teeth sharpness included. They’re a bit dull, I suppose, but that probably has to do with the size of the figure.
I got one a long time ago, just after they started selling them. Though I haven’t seen any in the actual stores lately, it’s still available on the website as “Toy Story Rex Action Figure (Item # 200280P)”
It’s not to scale, so it’s obviously not a good replacement for the TSC Rex, of course, but it’s cheap and accurate otherwise, so I thought it was worth a mention.
Here’s a couple of pics:
Next to Hamm for size comparison, and with his jaw open:
While we’re on the subject of Rex I saw the Big Roarin’ Rex from Fisher-Price today and to be honest he actually looks better in person than in those pictures on their website. Even though he’s not supposed to be plush I kinda like him. He seems to be a pretty accurate size, his head looks to be on-model (but can’t be turned), and as it’s already been mentioned you can actually move the mouth on this one. Also when you squeeze him he doesn’t exactly roar but makes more of a squealing noise, but Rex was never good at roaring in the film so I like how the toy fits his character a bit like it’s struggling to let out a roar. The only thing I don’t like about this one is just that the tail is too short.
I also saw Utility Belt Buzz today, but I’ll still need to think about if I really want to go to all the trouble of buying him just for the belt when he’s pretty much the same as normal Buzz. Oh, and if you really think TSC Lotso is small there was another Lotso plush I saw there that was absolutely puny compared to him.
I think the Army Men are the most faithful of the toys in the collection. For me whatever inaccuracies Woody and Buzz have aren’t such a big deal, but the aliens not squeaking can be disappointing and Mr. Potato Head’s legs always seem to look annoying despite everything else that looks great about him.
Well that’s when you modify them. I was speaking more of how they don’t already come that way and how some people who buy them might not know how to change them to squeak if they’re not content with them just looking the way they should. I’m glad you posted that tutorial though. Doesn’t seem that hard to do at all, so I should try that myself one of these days. Too bad I don’t know how to use a drill.
Whoever told me the wings on that buzz were longer than the TSC version wasn’t kidding. I wonder how much longer they would need be to be movie accurate. I’m still trying to determine if its physically possible enough to store wings of that size in the back pack thing, while still letting them fold in correctly.
Well, the ones on that Buzz go out as far as they can; any more will make them potrude out.
I’m really interested in the actual movie length as well, but things to take into account are that the wings look a little taller, and the backpack is thinner.
Thanks everyone for wishing me a happy birthday! Like I said I will be sure to post pics. I usually post a link to imageshack but can anyone tell me how to post them here?
