Today I saw the Little Golden Books Toy Story 3 book. I couldn’t believe that a book that gives away the major plot points would be released before the movie was. And after reading some of the other topics around here, it seems that there’s an awful lot of spoilage going on for Toy Story 3. Maybe I just wasn’t as much in-tune with the press and merchandise for the last recent Pixar films, but I don’t ever remember anything being released prior to the film that would go so far as to reveal the climax and/or ending.
Is Toy Story 3 the most spoiled Pixar flick to date?
Well I would say that Toy Story 3 is the most hyped up Pixar film to date, and rightfully so. I have honestly never felt so much anticipation for one of their films before as with this one. A lot of the spoilers we have gotten are either from having important plot points leaked on the internet or just from piecing the story together through all the clips, but it’s also true that books for the movie tend to be out in stores too early and can spoil things that way. I think it’s due to Toy Story’s reputation and all the hype we’ve been given that it’s not quite as secret as Pixar’s other films (even when they only give away small clips and introduce new characters).
Funny you should say that Flick-E. Though I have loved, cherished, and know the Toy Story series for so long, I am not finding myself in unbearable anticipation for the third film like I felt for Up (that was crazy). I think though it is just that I am not seeing as many TV spots this year and have watched less trailers in general.
Okay, after typing that paragraph I suddenly cannot wait for Toy Story 3!!!
I agree AJD08. There seems to be so many spoilers for this film. It really is unfortunate for anyone that wanted to wait to see it and then accidentaly was ruined. I have to say I have never seen spoilers for a Pixar movie in such a large quantity.
I knew when they announced the marketing/merchandising budget in a press release last year (or was it 08? cant remember) that we were going to be in for more spoilers than usual. The amount of spoilers seems directly proportional to the money spent on merchendising. There were practically no toys for Up, thinkway didnt even bother for the first time on a pixar movie, and as it turns out the most spoiled you could really get with that movie was the japanese trailer (which their known for anyway). beyond that I went it knowing relatively nothing.
What I don’t get is why there are so many. Okay, from merchandicing/marketing and stuff, I see that. And also the fact that a threequel is long overdue, so more people are anticipating it more than originals (like Up).
But, even on here, there are too many spoilers. I dread going onto the TS section of the boards just in case anything is given away.
One thing I’m definately not looking forward to this month (and nearly all of next month too) is when after people in the U.S have seen the movie. Then they’ll be leaking EVERYTHING that happened, ruining it for people who live in countries where it hasn’t yet been released.
Either you start to use spoiler tags or don’t talk about it until everyone on here has seen it, because I for one do not wish to be spoiled.
I agree AJD08, it’s crazy how easy it is to find out pretty much the entire storyline of Toy Story 3 by going into a toyshop or bookstore, or just browsing on the internet. As someone who doesn’t like to know anything about Pixar films before their release, it’s a bit perturbing. I can understand why it’s happened (lots of merchandise, etc.) but I always thought Pixar were a bit more secretive about their upcoming releases. Apparently not.
And I completely agree with Ami’s sentiments; when Toy Story 3 is released in America, hopefully American citizens will be using plenty of spoiler tags on their posts here.
On Wikipedia, the plot summary spoils Lotso’s backstory. I tried to campaign with my user account for a far less spoiling summary, but they wagged their fingers and basically said, “Don’t worry about it.”
I also think it’s directly related to hype. I mean, with a movie as big as Toy Story 3, fans may be trying harder to find more information about it, and because of the demand, Pixar releases more as well.
I know what you mean. I was just looking over a stupid coloring book over at my local Michael’s store and had to quickly shut it after discovering how many vital plot points it reveals. And I’m still annoyed that PIXAR somehow managed to decide to allow post this spoilerific image on their company website. i48.tinypic.com/k1uxwm.jpg
Given, it doesn’t reveal much but you can already make several accurate assumptions based on this image.
I understand the publishing schedule means that this stuff comes out early - but I was doing so good with spoilers until the last two weeks. I was spoiled by a YouTube toy review of all things. Granted it was only a small thing, so I’m still convincing myself that it’s not all that true, haha.
It kinda sucks. I want to look at all the new merchandise, but I don’t want to be even more spoiled!
The availability of tie-in books before the movie itself doesn’t really bother me - after all, anyone who chooses to read a book telling the exact same story in advance must surely anticipate that things are going to be spoiled. So unless the books reveal some pretty major spoilers on the front cover, I can co-exist with them quite easily.
So far I haven’t exposed myself to too many spoilers, though a lot of the TS3 merchanside does make it painfully obvious who the main antagonist is going to be (I don’t recall this being the case with TS2, but then I don’t recall the pertaining antagonist showing up in a lot of merchandise either). This wouldn’t really be an issue, but for the fact that the trailers imply that it’s supposed to be a surprise.
Yeah, I agree with you on the “too many spoilers in the toy tie-ins” mogwai_milkshake. I mean, wow, just based on this LEGO set alone, I can already guess what the main climax for Toy story 3 is going to be.

it’s like PIXAR/Disney Marketing just said “Screw it, we know kids are going to buy whatever we dish out for the film, so we might as well reveal our major plot point in this tie-in product because it will be popular.”
I think there have been a lot of spoilers (which thankfully i have been able to avoid most of them) but maybe that’s just because i was rarely on Pixar Planet when Up came out…
I agree with the comments on merchandising. Up had less diverse merchandise available. Most of the Up merchandise I saw was in the Disney Store. But since Toy Story has an already established fanbase, and the main characters (well, they ARE toys after all) are easily marketed to target audiences, the span of what’s available where grows. Case and point- Toy Story LEGOs. If I am not mistaken ,this is the first Pixar film to have adopted a LEGO line. Sure Cars might’ve had it’s own collector’s series, but their popularity and availability wasn’t really made available until after the movie was released. Another reason merchandise might have been released early is because TS3 is a sequel, so the majority of the characters are already known.
