Toy Story 2: Old plot?

I really want to know what the old plot was for Toy Story 2 was. I’ve heard it mentioned here, but when I searched up on Google, it gave me the plot that is currently used for it.

As far as I (as a fan, not a studio worker) know, Toy Story 2 didn’t go through many huge plot changes. The roundup gang, though, used to be completely different (Jessie was a cactus, I think), and it used to be a direct-to-video production. If you’re talking about Toy Story 3, the original Disney-produced plot involved the Buzz Lightyear toys being recalled, and Buzz being sent to Taiwan. Hamm finds out that Buzz will be destroyed there, so the toys have to make it to Taiwan and rescue Buzz.

Pretty much all I know about the original plan for Toy Story 2 is that it was going to be straight-to-video, rather like The Lion King 2. Also, it was originally only 60 minutes long - after the decision was made to release the film in theatres, it was lengthened to an hour and a half.

Haha really? That’s hilarious.

By the way, I like your sig.

Edit: Found a bit more information in this interview with Lee Unkrich:

Edit 2: Aha, struck gold! According to Pixar Talk: “Elements added to expand the film for theatrical release include the opening sequence with Buzz battling Evil Emperor Zurg, Woody’s “nightmare” , the character of Wheezy, an expanded version of the luggage-belt chase, Prospector being “mint in the box” and “Jessie’s Song”. Senorita Cactus, a Mexican sidekick to the Prospector, was replaced by yodleeing cow-girl Jessie. A strong female character was suggested by Nancy Lasseter.”

I think that’s it, in a nutshell.

You’ve got some good researching skills there, Sunny! I enjoyed reading that interview as well as the information in the other links. And yes, the idea of Jessie originally being a cactus is very funny. I like that Nancy suggested the idea of a strong female character, it works really well in Toy Story 2.

Thanks Sunny! I enjoyed reading the interview as well. Aside from Woody and Buzz, Jessie is my favorite character in the TS movies (as you can probably tell), and I don’t think I would have liked it at all if they made her a cactus.

They do mention the cactus thing in TS2… in the form of concept art. I remember looking at the concept art on the TS2 disc and thinking “Aww that’s cute, cute ,cute… a cactus?”.

Wow, thanks for showing me that! For a long time I never really knew what Pixar’s actual thoughts were on Buzz Lightyear of Star Command but that’s exactly what I would have guessed. It’s funny how that was one time where they actually gave Disney freedom to go crazy with one of their characters and not care how it turns out on the basis that having a cartoon series gives a connection as to what the Buzz Lightyear toys are based on. Pixar is normally against having sequels or spin-offs for the sake of having them cause they certainly wouldn’t let Disney do that with Toy Story 3, but since they always thought of it as random sci-fi adventures in the style of Saturday morning cartoons they were able to make an exception.

I think what I liked best about the article was that it was Lee Unkrich being interviewed about Toy Story 2, and it will be really fun to draw comparisons to his experience on 3.
