Toy Story 3 By the Numbers

The good people over at /film put together a pretty decent infographic that puts the success of TS3 into perspective.

It’s interesting seeing how all their films stack up among the years. Despite know the numbers beforehand this graph helped me visualize things a little easier, obviously. I’d love to see this taken one step forward and include merchandise sales. The Cars bar would probably burst through the top of the frame.

pretty interesting article, now if you add that Toy Story 3 is the BEST SELLER DVD of 2010, beating Avatar, wow,I can not imagine how huge this beloved franchise is…

Of course, Avatar already had a DVD release in 2009, and 2010’s release was a ‘double-dipping’ strategy by the studios to win some more money from the Avatar fans who want to see 20 more minutes of Neytiri.

I’m glad that TS3 beat Avatar in 2010, but this is because Avatar already had its helping the year before.

Thanks for the link, aerostarmonk. I love infographics, and this helps to put Pixar’s massive success into perspective. We have to remember, though, that part of Toy Story 3’s huge success was due to the IMAX and 3D surcharges. Its competitors HTTYD and Megamind also had 3D and IMAX releases, but again, TS3 wouldn’t have made as much money it would have if it was simply released in conventional 2D.

Which is one reason why I’m so happy with Fast Five trashing Thor at the Australian box-office, despite the latter ‘cheating’ with ridiculous 3D ticket prices.

As for merchandise sales, I bet Toy Story will be second after Cars, judging from how active the merchandise thread here still is and the sheer number of toys I see a K-Mart even one year after the film’s release.

Great infographic! I’m one of those people who learn by images, so it’s better for me to see that then an article .Thanks for posting!

it’s simple, Avatar hit stores in April 2010, and in 12 months it has sold more than 10 million DVDs, on the other hand Toy Story 3 hit stores in November 2010 and in only 5 months it has outpaced Avatar DVD sales

that’s true, and I also see that happening, CARS 2 DVD will likely outpace Avatar and TS3, do not forget that the original Cars is one of the best seller DVDs of all time,

I can hardly believe it, but I can still say it deserved its status.

$2.4 billion in merchandise in one year? Wow.
Although I can pretty confidently assume that we make up a big chunk of that here. 8D
