For those not familiar with this whole backstory, Disney at one point had the rights to make sequels to Pixar’s earlier films without their involvement (in the same vein as their old direct-to-video lineup) so they created their own studio for making CGI films called “Circle 7” that was going to be making Toy Story 3. Most of these designs are for the recalled misfit toys that Buzz would have run into after he had malfunctioned and was being shipped back to the company he was made at in Taiwan to hopefully get fixed. There’s also an old Chinese looking man named Mr. Kagoy who possibly would have been a toy repairman. Of course after John Lasseter was put in charge of Disney animation the first thing he did was pull the plug on this version of the film and started it completely from scratch back with Pixar, so we can be sure that the Toy Story 3 we’re getting now will be far greater than this would have ever been. But it’s still kind of interesting to look at these characters knowing they’re not going to be in the film.
Nice find! I’m so glad that Pixar aren’t using these characters, some of them look horrible (especially ‘Cindy Scissors’). Still interesting to look at though.
I believe the majority of these have been posted on the boards before, though there are a few designs there that I don’t recognise. Either way, it doesn’t look good at all. Thank goodness Pixar aren’t using these characters!
Yeah, most of these designs are kinda bad. The thing that irks me is that half of them make no sense as toys. I mean, Cindy Scissors? Of course that’s gonna get recalled for safety issues. But the bear kinda [spoil]looks like Lotso from TS3.[/spoil]
I remember reading somewhere that the Pixar team made a point to not even read the script or anything for the Circle 7 version, but picture 14 in that link, ‘Handy Hans’ looks almost exactly like how Mr.Pricklepants has been described, minus the fact that the spikes are a swish army knife.
They’re both small mammals wearing overalls, similar hats, and that thing is designed to have swish army like parts that replace it’s spines. Definitely hedgehog/porcupine based. Pricklepants is also said to be a European souvenir and the concept art is named Hans. The similarities are impossible to ignore.
