Toy Story 3's Inspiration

We all know that Pixar never wastes a good idea, and a fair amount of ideas were recycled for what would become Toy Story 3. Though it just now dawned on me how similar it was to the first draft of Toy Story, or A Tin Toy Christmas. Though Pixar keeps much of that project secret, a making of video from the 90s states a big part of the plot; the toys get lost, and on their way back, they find a toy heaven. Which is a preschool where they’ll never get outgrown. Sound familiar? I really wonder how the rest was supposed to go.

The same documentary also uses Woody’s full name before it was “officially” announced.

Whoa, what? Where can I find this documentary? I thought Lee’s unveiling of Woody’s full name on his Twitter from a year and a half back was our first ever time hearing it.

I think this was it:

Though Lee did say that it was present in earlier promotional materials, people just never caught on (I guess this was one of those cases).

I still think it’s funny how the resolution of A Tin Toy Christmas was the struggle in Toy Story 3.

Whoa, thanks for that! I just watched the whole thing right now. Lots of interesting stuff. Especially cool to finally see a clip of Jim Varney acting for Slinky.

Yeah, you even get to hear some of Wallace Shawn’s unused lines (most of the footage of the voice actors is unused alternates). There’s actually a bunch of documentaries on YouTube; I wasted a whole afternoon on them.
