This is one of my recent favorite Disney films. What do you guys think about it?
You know, when it comes right down to it, I believe that Treasure Planet was overlooked, yet under-rated, in its theme and surrounding aspects. I have just recently begun to fall in love with the production, despite the fact that it practically bombed at the box office and failed to meet many movie-goers’ expectations as far as the story was concerned.
The film, to me, screams out “meticulous planning”. Judging by the fantastic animation and reoccuring themes/sequences that were drop-dead beautiful to behold, the credited workers probably slaved over this thing – they probably worked their butts off to make it look decent, which is somethinig they achieved…to say the least. The backround sets and overall animation is gorgeous, from the astounding explosions and implosions…to the ship-filled wardrobe of navy suits and day-wear.
As for the story… Well, it…could have been better. The way it was presented and concocted didn’t thrill me, sorry to say, even though the plot itself wasn’t entirely faulty. I suppose a few major details (such as character development) could have been fleshed out to a greater extent, but oh well. What’s done is done.
Other than the lack-luster story and various other negative aspects, it’s quite an enjoyable film to watch for the eye-candy alone. The characters are fun and have personalities that are unique enough to define their personal interests. Captain Amelia, in particular, has to be the most intriguing captain in a Disney film yet since…some other character whose name escapes me. (snigger)
But yeah. It’s an enjoyable film. Not the best thing in the world, but it’s…fun. ![]()

After-note: By the way, why is it that every…single…character with the name ‘Ben’ is brown in some fashion or another? If it’s a person, he has brown hair; if it’s an animal, he has brown fur; and if it’s a machine, he has brown paint. My sister and I have pondered this question for years, and we still don’t get it! ![]()
Annoying - Oh gosh, I didn’t delete your post, did I? One minute it was there and the next…it was gone. I could have sworn I pressed the “Post Reply” button and nothing more, so I don’t think I did anything. However, I’m terribly sorry if it was I who deleted your post. ![]()
No,you didn’t delete it. I did. <img src=“{SMILIES_PATH}/grinandwink.gif” alt=“;-D” title="Grin and
Wink" />
Well, anyway,I thought about your question, and yeah, that is extremely weird. It could have been intentional,or maybe it wasn’t. But still,it is weird.
Amelia is awesome. I’d love to see her and Jack Sparrow go head-to-head in a ‘battle of the captains’.
Like I said in my deleted post,I haven’t seen the film in a long time. But I recall quite a bit from it. Especially the scene in my current avie, lol.
Awesome post by the way!
I saw this movie on the Disney Channel. I have to say that it was really, reall good. I loved the characters. I think the ending was the best part for me.
Annoying - Oh, phew! That was close. I’m glad I didn’t delete it. Heheh. ![]()
Yeah, it is weird…to say the very least. Perhaps the name itself refers to the color brown in some form or another? Hmm…
Thank you, by the way!
That would be beyond cool…
Ahh! I love Treasure Planet!
I really regret not seeing it when it came out. It’s definitely underappreciated. It’s one of the best films I’ve seen, and because it’s 2-D makes it even better ^^ Maybe if it was released around the time of the Little Mermaid as planned, it would’ve gained more audiences.
I don’t remember much of this movie. But I do remember those flying ships didn’t get me…I mean, what are the sails for?! ![]()
Apart from the beautiful animation, there wasn’t much to this film. I liked the very general idea of it, but after watching it, was disappointed. The characters are so-so, the story doesn’t develop in a very coherant and enjoyable way, and the line between good and evil is just way too obvious and striking. I give it about a five out of ten.
Hah! Screw the fact that it was a box-office bomb, this movie was amazing! I loved the story, characters, music, and animation. Didn’t anybody love the score? It was done by James Newton Howard… I thought he did a fantastic job!
I welcomed the idea of Treasure Island in a space/universe setting. Suuure, I wondered how they could breathe, but later on I didn’t care. I liked Jim and Silver’s relationship, how both of them evolved because of each other… yet in the end they still went for what they really wanted. They had the cute factor (Morph) and the funny factor (BEN, although he did come in rather late…).
Yup, totally cool. Deserves more recognition.
Gasduude: The sails are solar-sails; they catch the sun and use the power to run the ship … I think. ^^ It’s been a while since I’ve seen this.
Wow, Vim and I used to skip lectures at uni to go watch Treasure Planet over and over again! It’s actually tied in my affections with Aladdin and The Incredibles.
It’s a fantastic film, the animation is gorgeous and the characters are brilliant. The relationship between Silver and Jim works perfectly on screen; they handled it so well. (Forget Jack Sparrow and Captain Amelia, I want to see Jack and Silver going head to head!)
I think it’s one of Disney’s best films but most people just didn’t get it. They were really ambiguous about this other dimension it was set in, the advertising was very low-key for it – a lot of people I talk to have never even heard of it – and it’s biggest problem was that it was in production for far too long. I think I heard the profit they got from Lilo & Stitch, they lost in Treasure Planet because they kept holding it back and going over it – they were made to re-animate key scenes after the September the 11th attacks to take the swords out, in case it upset people. (Which seems a bit strange really – you sort of expect swords in a pirate movie!)
But it’s well worth a watch!
Yah, I heard about that too. I didn’t get it either. sigh Well, they covered Scroop up well since he had those chopper hands. Gah, but I saw pics of the guy doing cool things that were taken out of the movie… those scenes would’ve made him seem a lot evil-er.
But glad to know there’s someone out there who likes it as much as I do! ![]()
I really don’t understand all that stuff about taking out sword-use because of 9-11. It wouldn’t’ve bugged me much. And 9-11 was right in my backyard. #_#
C’mon, they had guns, those are worse than knives methinks. If they had bombs I probably would’ve been on edge. But not swords or knives.
Then again they did have explosions in the film … ah well, it wouldn’t’ve bugged me.
The only things that set me off are when helicoptors fly low in the area or when they make films relating to 9-11. I didn’t know anyone personally who died in it, but for some reason it makes me really upset.
Anyways, back on topic- I loved how they animated 3-d with 2-d and it didn’t turn out so weird- like with Silver’s robotic arm. Anyone here check out their test with Captain hook having the robotic arm? xD Ish funneh.
I’ve only seen Treasure Planet once. The family and I drove all the way to Emeryville to see it, since it wasn’t in theaters after that Christmas. I don’t remember it much, but I do remember I really wanted to see it because I heard it would be one of the last Disney traditional animated films. Since then, I haven’t heard anyone talk about it.
I really do like Treasure Planet, it is one of the best post-renassiance area Disney movies out there. The animation is amazing and I love the concept and world. Silver is great too. ^-^
My pet peeves with the film is that it was way to short, they had plenty of colorful characters, but they didn’t have the time to really dig deeper into their personalities. Another thing is they used to much CG when they didn’t need to. I mean, I love the CG on the ships and the CG cyborg arm is cool too, but did they really need to render the treasure chest of the map in CG?
I haven’t seen Treasure Planet yet. I remember when it first came out, I thought it looked lame (judging by the teasers and such). But I was - like - eleven or twelve at the time, anyway, so I didn’t know. Now recently, I looked into it, and thought ‘hey! Ron Clements and John Musker did this! They’re awesome!’ And I read some stuff about the story. Captain Amelia sounds great. And the fact that she is voiced by Emma Thompson is fabulous. Emma Thompson is a great actress.
I am renting it really soon. Then I’ll post what I think.

I agree. This is a very underrated movie!
I remember when the teaser came out, I was blown away. The moon in the distance that became the space-port! Incredible animation.
I don’t know if I need spoiler tags for this, but I’ll do it just in case.
I just watched the film last night. I have to say, I liked it quite a bit! I liked the [spoil]mutiny plot, and the Captain Amelia/Doctor Doppler subplot.[/spoil] This was one movie, though, where I actually liked the action-y scenes [spoil](the mutiny, the star going supernova) [/spoil]more than the rest.
I would have really liked that character that was Captain Amelia because she’s a cat, and a female, and an authority, which is awesome. But her character wasn’t developed well enough. And I didn’t like how soft she turned at the very end montage… [spoil]with her babies with the doctor… [/spoil]just didn’t make sense. to me. But Emma Thompson is a genius actor and did a phenomenal job providing the voice. I loved her line about the tea when she [spoil]was injured[/spoil]. You always have to add in a line involving tea for British people. ![]()
But I really really liked Doctor Doppler. He’s so archetypal (scoff), yet so lovable! It’s that absent-minded professor/ over-enthusiastic/ almost child-like type of personality. The genius with a big gigantic heart who you adore. Favorite lines of his:
[spoil]
Amelia: Doctor… you have wonderful eyes…
Doppler: She’s lost her MIIIIND!"
Sarah: Are you just saying this because it’s right, or because you want to go?
Doppler: I really really really really want to go.
[/spoil]
There are others, but I can’t remember right now.
I thought that Silver did too many mean things to be forgiven so many times. I did not think his character was very likable, even though he had a soft-side for Jim.
B.E.N. was also hilarious. [spoil]“HEY FELLAS! WE’RE OVER HERE FELLAS!”[/spoil]
This is about all I can remember right now!

I bought Treasure Planet a few months ago at GameStop…my sisters almost killed each other about who was going to watch it with me first…to quote B.E.N…‘Oh mama.’
AnnoyingPerson95: That’s a great quote! Why couldn’t both your sisters watch it with you together? ![]()
