Tron and Tron: Legacy

Yay!! High-five!

I’ve never seen the original Tron, but I’m thinking about seeing Tron: Legacy. Should I see the original first?

Yes.

That’s a good “complex” to have  I’d love to hear your thoughts on how the sequel compares to the first! For those you interested about the first movie and aren’t able to watch it, here are 10 Things You Need To Know About Tron: Legacy:

(Original Tron spoiler alert)

Then I won’t watch it, because I haven’t seen either of them. :stuck_out_tongue: I’ll probably just get both on DVD and call it even, since I can’t afford the theater. :frowning:

Alas…I haven’t done my job :frowning:

Well whenever you see the movie, please do let me know your thoughts on both! And for everyone else…I hope you DO see TRON: LEGACY in theaters this weekend  And you come back and share your reviews of it with me!

I thought you guys might find this bit of trivia pretty cool.

"Kushner and his group felt a less than warm welcome at Disney claiming, “We tackled the nerve center — the animation department. They saw us as the germ from outside. We tried to enlist several Disney animators but none came. Disney is a closed group.”

Many Disney animators refused to work on “TRON” because they feared that computers would put them out of business. In fact, Disney did close its hand-drawn animation studio, but not until 22 years later.

One imagineer credits early previews of “TRON” for allowing him to see the huge potential of computer generated imagery. That imagineer was John Lasseter, who later helped set the industry standard for CGI/VFX at Lucasfilm/Industrial Light & Magic (ILM) and has since returned to Disney, now serving as CEO of Pixar and Disney Animation. Hand-drawn animation was ultimately resumed at Disney at his behest."

Oh no! It’s not that I don’t wish to watch the movie, I just have no money. It’s the holiday season, so my money is needed for other purposes. :frowning:

Here’s what we thought: “With spectacular visuals and an excellent score by Daft Punk, Tron: Legacy is a film that should be seen in 3D and on the big screen. This sequel to the 1982 cult-classic is highly recommended for both fans and those unfamiliar with the original film. ***1/2 (Out of 4)”

Personally, I would definitely recommend seeing this one. It has a certain ‘cool’ factor about it. Fun, and great to look at too. The 3D is good and the theatrical experience is very immersive. Overall, it’s a good film to bring a group of friends to over the holidays.

The lightcycles are really cool…

My review: 8.5/10

While the $170 million+ investment placed in this film may eventually be widely ridiculed around the film industry, Disney deserves some respect for putting so much at risk for a property that’s such a radical departure from the brightly-lit, romanticized stories they usually produce. Tron Legacy feels almost Kubrickian at times.

In spite of the cheesy and cryptic script, the story is actually pretty engaging and while it does get slow at parts, there are enough action sequences spread throughout the second half that kept me from getting bored.

Most of the cast is pretty good in this, but it unfortunately makes the monotonous performance of Garrett Hedlund stand out like a sore thumb. He’s probably the most uninteresting lead character this side of Bale’s Batman.

Like the first Tron, I do think this movie will come to be appreciated more in the future when talk of the budget and critic expectations of a fast-paced actioner have eased up. In my opinion, there is a lot to like here in the visuals, the music, and even the story.

Just saw it today. Overall, while not amazing, it definitely does not deserve the beating that some critics are giving it.

Although it began a bit boring, the second half really picked up in my opinion. However, the pacing was pretty wonky and there were too many lame expositional scenes. Some of the characters are just pointless, and I feel like [spoil]Tron’s “big moment” in the climax was extremely underplayed[/spoil]. Still, the story did what it needed to, and I thought the ending was surprisingly good.

The visuals were the highest point of the film for me. Despite the limitations of the world, they manage to pull off a ton of interesting, varied sets. I’d really like to check out the art book sometime. I thought the CGI Clu was extremely ugly and poorly done, though. xD And of course, the soundtrack was excellent.

Overall, if you’re looking for a fun movie that might not be an incredible work of art but still manages to be a good time at the movies, Tron: Legacy is an excellent choice.

And yes, I saw it in 3D. I think the 2D version might’ve been the better choice for this one; taking off my glasses, the world was so much brighter and more visually interesting in 2D.

Oh, and I never saw the first Tron before seeing this, and I was still able to understand it fine. You can definitely go into it before seeing the original.

Thanks for sharing your thoughts guys! I’m glad you guys appreciate the “risk” taken with this movie and everyone is really proud of it! Overall, I think the fans enjoyed the movie a lot more than critics (and you guys count more anyway :stuck_out_tongue:) so definitely appreciate the feedback.

And IncredigirlVirginia - I completely understand!!! Hope you’ll be able to see it soon - both of them!

After seeing how critics seemed to be totally bashing this film, I went in with totally low expectations, which is why I think I enjoyed it so much! It’s my favorite film of 2010, in fact. Something about it just caught my imagination and made me fall in love with this world. The actors were splendid, the music was mind blowing, and of course, the special effects were to die for. I have to say, I really hope this does well enough for it to get a sequel! I really really super enjoyed it!

I usually listen more to what fans say then what the critics say! And I’ve heard good things from fans.

Leonard Maltin is the only critic who’s worth half the money in his wallet, anyway. I have a personal disdain for the vast majority of movie critics. :stuck_out_tongue:

I’m seeing this tomorrow.

Have fun, tell us what you think of it!

I just came back from seeing it. One word: Wow… :astonished:
And then followed by: What’s up with the critics?
Because I don’t see why they bash it so much. I love it. The beginning is a bit slow, I gotta admit, but I totally fell for the movie [spoil]the moment when Flynn reunites with his father[/spoil]. The story was very engaging, the actors did a great job and I completely agree with Bryko614 about the ending. Not to mention the visual effects. And I fell in love with the soundtrack before I even see the film.
If you are looking for an enjoyable time, I recommend this one. Not the best I’ve seen, but definitely worth the money.

I saw Tron:Legacy yesterday. I liked the film overall, and I was holding back a tear or two when Sam’s father died. But when I left the movie theatre, I had many questions regarding what would happen. Would Quorra become a human? Did Tron die?

Besides the plot holes I noticed, it was overall a great movie.

I just got back from seeing it and only one word can describe it: Awesome!
My favorite parts were the disc battles and the light cycle battle.
