U.K. Screenwriter Sues Pixar for Stealing "Cars"

A U.K. screenwriter is suing Disney and Pixar, alleging the animated hit Cars and its forthcoming sequel are based in part on work he submitted in the early 1990s. The man is seeking an injunction to stop the release of Cars 2, which is scheduled to be released theatrically on June 24.

Either that’s just a big coincidence, or maybe, this has happened several other times with some other works that Disney has infringed in their movies…

But i’m not saying that Pixar did this purposely!

This is not the first time. Pixar has been sued not once, but twice, before for pinching ideas for Monsters Inc. The details has been explained thoroughly in The Pixar Touch, and relatively unbiased too, I might add (The authors side with Pixar, and give sufficient reasons for their stand).

Here’s an article if you wanna read up on the previous scandals.

There are two possiblities:

A) Pixar/Disney did indeed steal from Mr Anthony. It is a very real possibility, as some of the similarities he outlines in his case are unerringly uncanny.

b) Pixar/Disney did not steal from this man. In which case, it is divine coincidence, and Mr Anthony either is misguided, or is after Pixar’s coffers for a ‘settlement’.

I’ll be very interested to see how Pixar’s legal eagles handle this, and whether Mr Anthony has a sufficient case or is he just after the money.

When I first saw this thread I thought of Monsters, Inc. thedriveintheatre already covered that. There has been much conspiracy with not just Pixar, not just animated movies, but movies in general stealing ideas from other films. It comes very unavoidable for a studio of Pixar’s size.

Doesn’t worry me. This kind of thing comes around all the time and he won’t get what he wants. Even if they did copy the idea (which I doubt) nothing will happen. This is Pixar we’re talking about… :unamused:

People are always suing Pixar. The article TDIT posted sums it up perfectly.

I don’t believe him, sorry. Yeah, I’m pretty biased, but if he was so outraged at them stealing his work, why didn’t he make a big to-do when the movie first came out…you know, before it was making billions of dollars? Seems awful convenient to me.

And stuff like this happens with practically every single popular thing ever. Do I know its not true? No, but I don’t think anything will come out of it.

I think if Pixar did steal the idea, something should happen. Just because they’re a major studio with a reputation doesn’t mean that they’re above the law.

Having said that, it is awfully convenient how the guy brought this up only months from the release. I’m not discounting either theory (cos’ that would be biased, there’s always the slim chance that a Pixar really could’ve pinched from this guy).

Apple famously stole the idea for its iPod interface from Creative, a lesser-known Singaporean IT company (If you’ve ever used the Soundblaster cards in your PC, they’re from Creative). But because Apple is the Goliath with the coffers of money and team of legal experts, they basically drew out the case until Creative ran out of money, before silencing Creative with a settlement.

It could also likely be the case here, with Pixar being the Goliath and this little scriptwriter being the David. Now whether Pixar really stole this guy’s idea, or is it a divine coincidence, or is this guy is just after the money, only God knows. But I think Pixar is better than that.

I didn’t mean it in that sense. If they actually did steal it then yes, something should be done regardless of who it is. But these kinds of things happen all the time and I think we have already touched on the point that if it is plagarised, the issue has been brought up pretty late. Basically, I’m on Pixar’s side. These types of things just annoy me :-\

Honestly, this is about as stupid as Chevron suing PIXAR for the use of “Cars as characters”.

It reminds me of that time this author’s family was trying to sue JK Rowling for plagiarizing his book based on events that happened in Goblet of Fire…years after the release of the seventh, when it had gained huge revenue in books, movies and merchandise, and after the guy had already died.

^^^ Yeah I remember that! People will do anything these days in attempt to make money.

I agree with Rac here. If he wanted to pull this off, he should have done this back in '06. I really don’t sympathize with this guy. And it’s not just because I prefer Pixar, I just think this is a little ridiculous all over.

To quote Mittens, I find this disturbing on a number of levels. :open_mouth:

LOL some people have strong opinions! I told my mom all about this U.K. guy trying to sue Pixar…she laughed. :sunglasses:
