Unofficial Awards and Recognitions

I dunnno how many Aussies we have here, and I don’t know whether there’s an ‘Awards and Accomplishments’ thread (if there is, could one of the mods just move it there? Thanks!), but they just screened the latest episode of 20 to 1 on TV a few minutes ago, and you couldn’t imagine my surprise when Wall-E got a place on the list! For the uninitiated, it’s sort of a countdown show hosted by this fat guy called Burt Newton, with opinions by famous Oz film, TV and radio personalities. It basically runs down an arbitrary ‘Top 20’ list on everything pop-culture from Celebrity Flings, Karaoke Songs to Spectacular Stuff-Ups. Yeah, mostly insignificant stuff.

Tonight’s episode had a rather beguiling title, but basically it’s the best 20 film kisses of all-time. And yup, our trash compactor and his egg-shaped girlfriend got Number 18! I was geeking out in front of my bro! They showed scenes from the movie along with ‘trivia’ questions like how they hired a designer from Apple to design Eve, and that it won a Golden Globe and Oscar nomination. And they played Define Dancing! Aaah… so romantic! :)

FYI, it beat An Officer and a Gentleman and Breakfast at Tiffany’s at number 20 and 19 respectively, but lost out to ‘lesser’ kisses (IMO) like Rain Man (just above it at 17!), Shrek and American Pie 2 (WTH? :-\)

Oh well, this may be a pretty inane show, but anything that honours Wall-E as one of the greatest screen snogs is fine by me! Newton summarised it later in the episode’s replay as "Two robots’ [i:dbkdg6z4]shocking[/i:dbkdg6z4] kiss." Oh, haha, nice pun, Burt.

Did anyone catch that episode? The website doesn’t even displays previous episodes’ list, so you’ll have to take my word for it. :D

¿Qué  The heebie-jeebies?

Yeah, sometimes I get the feeling they just put the people there to ‘pad out’ the show.

Well, how else are we supposed to call him?
Aw… your sis told you after it was over? :frowning: So you didn’t catch Burt making lame puns about it?

I’m loving your description of Burt Newton, thedriveintheatre.

Good for WALL-E and EVE managing to get a spot on the list! I love how their kiss isn’t really a kiss, in the way that they have no lips and yet it’s still so obvious exactly what they’re doing and what the feel of the moment is meant to be.

That’s pretty neat, although Shrek shouldn’t have been included.

Pretty cool! The ‘kiss’ between WALL-E and EVE was definitely a moment. At least it was for me. It was epic cute

I changed the title of this thread to better reflect the content, and so that I don’t create a new thread for this announcement.

Wall-E got ranked #62 in the ‘100 things that rocked our world’ list for the 100th issue special of Empire Australia (June)! It is basically a rundown of the favourite movies, actors, scenes and anything film that they loved for the past 8+ years, so this is quite an accolade! It got listed along with a picture and under the heading ‘This Romantic Movie’ or something to that effect. Even better, Pixar got ranked #2 in the list along with a quote from Pete Docter! There’s also a double-spread page of Buzz and Woody along with an anecdote from Lasster on how he loved shopping at toy stores while researching the movie, in the celebrity photo-shoot special.

I saw this today at my local newstand… didn’t buy it, but I was pleasantly surprised by the Pixar mentions while flipping through the pages, so maybe Aussie readers or overseas subscribers of the Empire Oz edition might be interested in this issue.
