Wall-E in today's LA Times "Envelope"

EDIT: The articles are now online (see below)

The LA Times has a kind of a weekly section of the paper called “The Envelope” around awards time, and guess who’s on the cover?
Wall-E. Giant closeup color picture of Wall-E’s face with those soulful eyes, taking up the entire cover.

Inside (at the center) there’s a section called “Animation’s World of Wonder” which has articles on Wall-E (“Wall-E: Meet the Man Behind the Robot’s Universal Appeal”) talking about Ben Burtt and the sound effects used in the movie, as well as articles on Bolt, Kung-Fu Panda, Despereaux, and Madagascar.

There’s also a section on film composers called “Keeping Score” which has some short articles on Thomas Newman (mostly about his work on “Revolutionary Road”), James Newton Howard, Rachel Portman, Alexandre Desplat, and AR Rahman. But in the print edition, the other composers have tiny or medium-sized pictures… and Thomas Newman gets a nice, large color picture (about 1/2 of the page), smiling at the keyboard.

The articles are generally pretty small but still interesting… but the problem is, as of now this isn’t online. Sometimes it takes a few days or more for the “Envelope” articles to get put online, maybe even a week later (I tried doing a search and couldn’t find them). Maybe within a week they’ll be up online. It’s LA Times “The Envelope.” The main site is here:
theenvelope.latimes.com/ but none of the articles are up yet).
If anyone stumbles across them once they’re put up online, please feel free to post the links.

For those in the LA area who see this in print, the cover of the Envelope this week has Wall-E’s soulful eyes taking up the entire cover, and says “Who needs words? Wall-E’s beeps and whirs say it all. UNIVERSAL LANGUAGE”

The short article (larger picture than article!) on Thomas Newman is called “A Man of Many Moods” (doesn’t mention Wall-E except in passing; is more about his score for “Revolutionary Road” and playing the piano).

Anyway, the section is aimed a lot at Academy voters in town, so it’s good to see Wall-E getting some good publicity…

There’s also a full-page ad for Wall-E in it, and as well, and interesting article talking about the song (Down to Earth). I posted that article in full (it’s short) in the Wall-E Soundtrack thread. Have a look.

EDIT: The articles are now online.

Interesting, miafka! I completely agree about the universal language thing, too. I hope they do put these articles up online- they sounds very interesting! And it’s always a good thing for WALL-E to get even more publicity.

Thanks for this, miafka. That’s really great news that WALL•E is getting a lot of exposure, especially a cover page of the segment of that newspaper - hopefully this will lead to something and influence the voters in the LA area. Love that photo of Ben Burtt, awww. I really hope he wins some sort of Oscar for his work with WALL•E, he deserves it so much.

Thanks for posting! I love the image on the cover (as you can probably already tell). I really love seeing this kind of WALL-E publicity at awards time. WALL-E truly deserves all the recognition it can get.

On top of Wall-E’s appearance on the cover of that inset, today’s LA Times came with a beautiful “for your consideration” booklet. It has a good 15 or so pages of movie scenes along with blurbs with critical praise.

Interesting articles, miafka! Ben Burtt, as I’ve said before, is Win. Nice to see the other animated flicks up for consideration too. I’m glad Wall-E is getting exposure in the media, let’s hope it goes all the way to nomination for B.P.!

Wall-E… you can do it!
