Laugh-Out-Loud, I didn’t realise that…
Not to mention little M-O has Obsessive Compulsive Disorder…kinda reminds me of Tony Shalhoub’s Monk (he was in Cars by the way, as Luigi). You thought you’re the one with aspergers, Scyther, my parents suspect I have OCD too, because I have a slight aversion to germs also. But you should see my table, it is always the messiest among my siblings, and I’m lousy at doing the dishes . Not to mention I’m kind of a hoarder, like Wall-E.
Next thing you know, we’ll be saying Eve is a psychopath and AUTO’s a control freak…
Oh, and thanks for the trivia, Le_chocolat. I would have loved to see the deleted scene, although I agree with y’all that it wouldn’t be as powerful and character-developing as the final version.
Robo-Aspergers Syndrome? Ha-ha-ha! That actually does make sense… But I suppose if you could live for 700 years and were living alone you would develop a few weird social habits here and there. But it would be cute if he had Aspergers…
To answer Cybearg’s question about the plant dying in space…
The roach would have died if he went with Wall-e. The plant does have internal gases it can’t lose, but the area the Axiom is in space is immediately next to a gas cloud, which has some atmosphere, mostly hydrogen and perhaps alot of water. This may explain why we can hear the lovebirds conversation. Also, there will be heat from nearby star formation. Almost everyone seems to miss this point…it’s why the Axiom is parked there - to use the resources of this star forming region. Other reasons might be since its picturesque or to hide it.
Someone responded to Woof133’s post saying that Wall-e is too lovestruck most of the time around Eve to say much. I noticed that when the movie shows what it looks like thru Wall-e’s eyes, it’s blurry. This happened during the tire dump scene and the Captain’s bridge scene, but not in the approaching sandstorm shot. In fact, Eve’s speech is all garbled sounding when she is frantically trying to hide and reason with Wall-e in some sort of tongue… machinespeak? Wall-e also seems to use a machinespeak, like with the typing robot when he waves and the Hal roach.
About the cooler that Wall-e bangs to get the dust out: a lot of people seem to miss this. He doesn’t have any personal possessions in the cooler at that time, he has already taken them out. He keeps banging to get as much dust out as possible. Wall-e even takes his treads off like the Japanese take off their shoes upon entry. He is very finicky about this, although M-O is certainly obsessive.
I went over many of these types of points in the Advanced Wall-E 101 thread. It’s sort of an ‘observations that aren’t completely obvious’ thread. There’s much more detailed speculation and that thread is just crammed with not so obvious observations. But it’s not like the Pixar in-joke thread either…
Mmm… I wouldn’t say that. I think all of that is just him being a robot alone for 700 years, with little to no social interaction. Seeing him on the Axiom, he seems too social to have Aspergers.
Speaking of the little cleaner bot, could someone please explain the following to me? [spoil]During the scene where all the robots rush away out of the room (when we first see M-O), WALL•E has left some muddy tracks on the floor and M-O doesn’t know what to do for a second, so he closes his eyes to jump over the line on the floor.[/spoil] Why does he do this?
Basically, [spoil]the line is there to keep him from doing anything other than his job, which is to clean the EVE’s once they come back from their mission. It’s probably some sort of magnetic thing that keeps him there. He was so anxious to clean the tracks though, so jumped off it. I love how he closes his eyes as if he’s afraid the Axiom will blow up if he jumps off the line, and then he dances with joy when nothing happens. I love this part, because it emphasizes the whole theme of stepping outside of one’s directive. Everyone’s so afraid that if something is done different from routine, it will result in chaos.[/spoil]
I had the impression that you had Aspergers syndrome too! If you don’t, and just have Wall-E’s social habits, then I sincerely apologise for the misunderstanding. But if you do, there’s nothing wrong with that either. I was just making a point of how some of us share the same ‘quirks’ as the robots, ie how I may be obsessively paranoid of dirt like M-O and yet be a total slob like Wall-E at the same time!
With regards to M-O’s ‘breaking of old habits’, I loved that scene too! I instantly got it the first time I saw it, because if I remember correctly, [spoil]M-O was leading GO-4 and the steward bots to the cleaning room and he stopped when the magnetic track had not lighted up yet, then continued when it was clear to go.[/spoil] The point of being a robot is to follow your program unquestionably, and M-O and the other robots demonstrated that unquestioning obedience in that scene prior to this one. This was about as poignant as the T-100’s forced shutdown scene near the end of Terminator 3, when he had conflicting directives to kill or save John Connor. To me, ‘breaking the rules’ to rise above the banality of mere existence is one of my favourite themes of this movie too.
Oh, sorry about that. I have a tendency to ramble on and on in long sentences, another habit of mine!
And congrats on being the 1000th member and welcome aboard!
Thanks so much for clearing that part of the movie up for the Le_chocolat and thedriveintheatre. I understood it somewhat after seeing the movie, but what confused me the most is why other people laughed at it so much, I thought maybe I missed something there. I never realised how [spoil]M-O’s storyline supported the message of going against one’s directive.[/spoil] That’s really cool.
In the end credits, where it shows the [spoil]animals and the fish and the birds, how is that possible? Where did the animals come from? I thought they were all dead (cockroach aside)?[/spoil]
That’s an interesting question. It’s unlikely that the animals would’ve evolved to be exactly the same as their predecessors, aside from the very general ideas of some animals being able to fly, others being able to swim underwater, and that sort of thing. How would the humans even know what the animals from all those years ago looked like? That is, unless WALL-E and Al-Bob’s ideas of there being animals stored on the Axiom are correct.
This has been answered twice at least at various places, maybe earlier in this huge thread, and over at the Adv.Wall-E101 thread.
Many plants that died still have roots left. They may have tried to germinate during the few times things weren’t so toxic, but their buds died, no “sustained” evidence of photosynthesis. Eventually they would have crept out of places like old refrigerators which they used for protection, places that the ever inquisitive Wall-E finds all the time, but Eve didn’t dig so deeply into.
Also, instead of a zoo or arboretum or herbarium, they might just have stored DNA samples aboard the Axiom. Perhaps one ship was dedicated to just this and arrived later. And even if they didn’t do any of the above, there would still be bones with DNA, decayed logs, etc…
This movie was perfect, except well the Escape Pod scene with the Self-Destruct. A bit too heavy for the kiddies. Also, I could detect the dark hand of Sigourney Weaver there. Yes indeed.
How do the people on tha Axiom or in general go to the bathroom ?
And [spoil]when Eve comes in the truck of Wall-e for the 1st time she coughs and whe don’t see her mouth after that[/spoil] so where did it come from ?
I know these are dumb and weird questions bu just like to know what you think ?
I must’ve missed that, DarkHandOfSigourneyWeaver. Some of the posts are pretty long in there, and I’ve got a limited amount of time on the net each day! But thanks for explaning that. You’re right- there would probably have been plenty of bone samples left on Earth, just like the fossils we have today.
Pixar.rocks- I’d completely forgotten about [spoil]EVE coughing then[/spoil]. I wouldn’t be surprised if it was something added by the Pixar animators just to make her seem more human, since EVE doesn’t need to breathe or anything like that, and therefore doesn’t have a mouth. Perhaps it was just part of her programming or something, to give her a more human personality.
