WALL•E's name

I was wondering what you thought the reason was for WALL•E’s name to be, well, WALL•E. Could it be a reference to Walt Disney or Wally B.? I also found something interesting (being obsessed with A113 and all): LLE in “leet” is 113, and adding A to 113 makes A113. WA + LLE = WALL•E, so could WALL•E = W + A113?

What are your thoughts on WALL•E’s name?

This is really old news: Waste Allocation Load Lifter - Earth class :stuck_out_tongue:

yeah… probably pixar or disney likes the name wally / walle or something… because of walt maybe…

I love WALL-E’s name. It’s so clever.

Or as Martini said…

=p

I think what A113 is getting at is why did they call him WALL•E/Wally? Not what WALL•E stands for as we know that because I’m almost certain that came after deciding upon his name as WALL•E. I’m sure they could have come up with an acronym for maybe JER•E or something similar Look at all the names we have for characters in WALL•E so far : SALL•E, GAR•E etc.

As for the hidden references in the name though: purely coincidental IMHO.

bawpcwpn- So, are you saying that you think they chose the name ‘WALLl-E’, and then thought about what words could apply to that to make it into an acronym? That makes sense, especially with the other names.

I think it’s probably just a play on words to make the acronym sounds just like a normal name- Wally, as we’ve mentioned before. As to why they chose this, well, you could ask the same question of all of Pixar’s characters; why’s Remy called Remy? I guess they probably just thought that Wally suited the personality of the character that they were creating.

and don’t forget that Wall-e rhymes with Dolly

Hello WALL•E!
Well, Hello WALL•E!
It’s so nice to have you back where you belong
You’re looking swell, WALL•E,
We can tell, WALL•E,
You’re still glowin’, you’re still crowin’

Nice little pick up there clabot

I know what it stands for. Anyone who’s a genius (plenty of those at Pixar :stuck_out_tongue: ) can think of an acronym for ANYTHING. I was just wondering why they chose WALL•E. If it was more for the earth robot cleaning-up stuff, they might as well have named him CR•E.

I see what you’re saying. I wonder then if they came up with WALL-E first and then thought up an acronym to stand for it or came up with his title first and realized it spelled out WALL-E

To be honest, the whole WALL-E = Wally thing was never completely obvious to me in the first place. The first time I read the word WALL-E, I saw it as two separate words- wall, and then e, instead of it being Wally. It’s just habit now, I guess.

When I first saw WALL-E’s name, I didn’t know how to pronounce it. But then I saw the trailer and now his name reminds me of “Where’s Wally”.

But to answer A113’s question, they gave the little robot a name that is similar to a human’s, so that we would feel closer to him. The same reason why he has big, child-like eyes, and a cute voice. It’s another way of anthropomorphising him.

Well, surprisingly, I pronounced it correctly the first time. Usually I wouldn’t pronounce strange titles correctly at first, but I did! I DID NOT think it would stand for something though, i just thought, “Oh, a robotic name to stand for Wally”. It kind of reminded me of Wally B. though.

rachelcakes1985- Sorry if I don’t know what you mean, but where you trying to reference Where’s Waldo? by any chance? Or is that his British name?

martini- Yeah, I thought about Wally B. as well when I first saw the name. Funny how we sort of subconsciously make connections from one Pixar thing to another, isn’t it?

And yes, “Where’s Wally?” is the equivalent of “Where’s Waldo?” I used to love those puzzles.

Oh, sorry. Yeah, that series of books/tv show was called “Where’s Wally?”, like lizardgirl already said. I used to love those books, too.

ya i read the name “wall-E” instead of wally…it makes sense if its cause of walt disneys name cause i can see wally being short for walk.
