I’ll be honest, I was suprised too. I was suprised it was even nominated. Don’t get me wrong, I love this song! But because it was in the end credits and not that associated with the movie, I didn’t know if Academy voters would nominate it. Either they love end credits or the “For Your Consideration Ads” work!
Even if Randy didn’t win, his performance on stage was great! Or was, idk, the sound was really off we could barely hear him over the orchestra. But, I bet it was fantastic. And his speech was one of the best that night!
I kind of agree, despite of feeling happyly to see him winning, I have to realize that his performance wasn´t that good, I mean he could have done BETTER,
It’s hard to judge considering the sound was totally off. But I agree, compared to Levi and Moore’s performance that followed, it wasn’t as good. On it’s own It was pretty good.
I know this doesn’t count for anything, and the Best song should win. I find it interesting that Randy has had 20 Oscar nominations, and has so far only won 2. Menken has been nominated 19 times and won 8.
We Belong Together is anything but my favorite Randy Newman song. I’m still happy it won!
My favorite of his songs is When Somebody Loved Me. But that song had a lot of competition that year. (Including You’ll be in My Heart from Tarzan and Blame Canada from South Park: Bigger, Longer, and Uncut)
I dunno… I kinda felt ‘We Belong Together’ was not Randy’s best. I would’ve preferred if he had won the Award for ‘You’ve Got A Friend in Me’ or ‘Our Town’, which felt more like evergreen classics to me that will be remembered forever. ‘We Belong Together’ felt like the obligatory cheerful tune tacked at the end credits to make the film’s conclusion less devastating and to give the audience a ‘lift’ when they walk out of the theatre.
I was rooting for ‘I See The Light’, but in my heart, I had a gizzard-feeling that TS3 would take home the prize.
Having said that, though, I’m very pleased Randy won his second out of 20 nominations. And it’s from another Pixar film! Randy and Pixar were made for each other. Congrats, Randy!
Thank god it wasn’t that A A Rahman and Dido number. As much as how pleasant and heartfelt that song was, I’m quite miffed that Rahman is having another go after the Slumdog Sweep of '08.
Why do I keep confusing this song’s title with a Mariah Carey number?
thedriveintheatre: As I said in the post above you, We Belong Together is one of my least favorite Randy Newman songs. But what it all comes down to is who the competition is and what the voters taste is. But I agree, Randy deserves it!
