Compared to the other Oscar nominations for Best Original Song, I can’t see Randy Newman deserving this one anymore than anyone else, although I did see Tangled, and loved it, I thought the musical score was a lot weaker than Alan Menken’s previous music and so was “I See The Light”, in fact, although I remember loving the scene I can barely remember the song sung in that seen, and I just hope that 127 Hours doesn’t get the Award as it’s by A.R Rahman who wrote the music for Slumdog Millionaire, which in my opinion wasn’t as good a film as every claims (very overrated). So you can guess as a fan of this film, this song and a member of these forums what I think should win, but will Randy Newman win after being well known for losing for music in films like The Princess and the Frog?
Well, I haven’t seen tangled or 127 Hours. But I think We Belong Together has a good shot.
Welcome to the forums, by the way!!
I was actually really surprised to see this nominated, it just doesn’t seem like its that great of a song. Not that I don’t like it, but it wasn’t exactly an important part of the movie. Is this just not a good year for original songs in movie? I haven’t seen or heard any of the nominees, but I’m rooting for Tangled anyway.
Welcome to the forums!
And I didn’t think the song was that big of a deal in the movie either. I loved it, because it’s Randy Newman and Toy Story, but to tell you the truth I’m praying for Tangled to win. Yeah, the songs weren’t as good as Menkan’s other ones, but it was still great and deserves it. I really hope Tangled wins it
Yeah, I haven’t gotten to see Tangled yet, but I’ve heard good things about it. And since it couldn’t get the best animated nom, I think they should get this one. This is the one award were I’m not rooting for TS3, I’d love for it to get the other 4, but I doubt it.
I think the song did have it’s importance in the Toy Story series, right next to ‘You’ve Got a Friend in Me.’ The series started on that song, and ended on ‘We Belong Together.’ I think it deserves the award, because it’s a great, well-written song on its own, and perfectly sums up… everything. Instead of ending on a sad note, it reminds us that it’s the beginning of a new life for everyone with its upbeat tone. I like it.
I agree with everything you said, but I just didn’t think of it as something that deserved an award. If anything I would have thought the Spanish you’ve got a friend in me would get the nomination, but I think it wasn’t eligible?
Yeah, I don’t think it was eligible as it is just a revised version of Randy Newman’s previous work, and even if it was eligible, the Academy wouldn’t consider it.
I think the song deserves it, but like others, I’ll root for Tangled. TS3 will definitely get best animated, and Tangled deserves something.
I like We Belong Together and I See the Light, they’re both good songs. But in my taste I like I See the Light better.
This category hasn’t been particularly predictable since the reign Disney musical came to an end. Now it’s a lot more common to have songs from movies you didn’t even realize had songs win. So being from an animated film - or even an animated musical - is no guarantee of an Oscar.
“We Belong Together” is a fine song, but I think it’s the weakest on in the entire trilogy. It does say something about the themes of the movie, but only in the most vague ways. It’s not a “You’ve Got a Friend in Me” or “Jessie’s Song,” which really capture the emotions of the characters and fit into the fabric of the story. It’s an added bonus at the end. I could see it getting the Oscar, maybe in part as a reward for all of Randy Newman’s work on the three films. But I don’t think it’s got much of an advantage over anything else.
It sums up the trilogy by saying we belong together and how you’ll always be with me even if the future takes you awway so I think it’s a very strong song I haven’t seen tangled but I’ve heard real good things but I’m still rooting for toy story
I personally loved the song, how uplifting it was after, well, you know, the emotionally train-wrecking ending Toy Story 3 had. But reading the opinions of many people on this forum, I thought, “Oh, well, it probably won’t be nominated, then.”
But, the fact it was nominated, AND Newman will perform it himself on stage, must mean it really does have potential to the bigoted Academy fat cats.
Please punctuate some.
I think it has a shot. I really do. But I’m still hoping for Tangled.
I’m rooting for Tangled, “We Belong Together” just wasn’t very interesting and it isn’t as recognisable or fun as the other film’s songs.
Saying that, I bet the song for 127 Hours wins. I like Danny Boyle’s work but I agree with whoever said that Slumdog Millionaire and 127 Hours were overrated.
Okay, it actually has a fair chance at winning, but I personally think this is a two-man race between I See the Light and If I Rise. I’m, personally rooting for the 127 Hours song, even though it’s a close decision, and I think it will win at the awards.
Congratulations Randy Newman, We Belong Togehter, and Toy Story!! It won!
Congrats Randy, you deserved it! I was rooting for I See the Light, but We Belong Together is worthy as well!
x 100
Aaaaaah! I’m so happy! We Belong Together is my favorite Pixar song. randy totally deserved it. Congrats, Randy!
Well I’ll be darned. Mr. Newman actually did it. This win was a complete surprise to me. Congratulations.
Also, Randy had by far the best speech of the event, (sorry Lee).
