Okay, I’ve watched Cars probably more than any other of my favorite movies, and this one part in which what is said isn’t completed has bugged me more than anything else. Here’s the scene:
The media and Mack are all there in Radiator Springs to fetch Lightning McQueen for the tie-breaker race in California. After a less desirable chat with Harv, Lightning sees Sally, the one he’d fallen for during the past few days, appear on the deserted side of Mack’s trailer. He leaves Harv babbling something about a new trailer, and drives over to Sally. All the sounds and noise the “oil-thirsty parasites” are making almost floats away as the emotions and feelings the two cars have for each other at the moment drown the noise out. He looks deep into her hazel eyes, and says…
“Sally… I want ya to… Look, I wish…” Then he lets out a frustrated sigh.
WHAT WAS HE GONNA SAY?!?! This is such a tender scene! I just really wanna know what it was he wanted to say but couldn’t. So, I decided to put this topic up for ya’ll to give your own ideas on what you think he was going to say.
I love this kinda stuff, I have a similar dilemma for Up, [spoil]after Carl looks through the back of the Adventure Book. I wonder what he would have said to Russell. I wish they would have gone with that, rather than Russell chasing after the blimp. sigh[/spoil]
Regarding the topic, I’m not sure, I know Lightning would have wanted to talk to her about how he feels, but the specifics, I dunno. Especially considering the wording he uses before he’s carried off, it’s hard to know exactly what he was trying to say. Moments like that kind of annoy me, I’m left seriously wondering what would have been said.
Totally! I see scenes like that in Pixar movies all the time! it just bugs me. Disney films tend to do it a lot too. In Bolt, I noticed a couple of times when Mittens tires to say something but then Bolt runs off to “save the day” or something. Ugh.

Yeah, I agree, it is annoying that we never find out exactly what the characters are trying to say in those situations. In this case, with Lightning, he probably wanted to just declare his feelings to Sally officially, like ffdude1906 said. When he says, “I wish”, perhaps he means that he wishes he could stay with her that she could go with him, something like that. It’s difficult to know the specifics, but sometimes in a way it’s nice for a character not to know what to say- it makes the conversation seem more human, natural. And obviously Lightning had a lot of feelings for Sally at that point and just couldn’t put them into words.
I agree with lizardgirl, when Lightning said, "I wish . . . " he wanted to say something like, “I wish that I could stay here with you.” And maybe when he said, "I want you to . . . " maybe it was something like, “I want you to remember me.” I’m just taking guesses here. But I’ve seen the movie so many times, this guess seems perfectly fine for the context of the scene.
But this seems natural. I mean, it’s hard sometimes to let your feelings out for someone. But I do wish I knew exactly what he was going to say.
Okay, for the first one, “Mack . . . Just hold it . . .” That one basically explains itself. I mean, he’s telling Mack to hold on and wait for him to be done.
The second one, “I know, but . . .” That one could say, “I know, but I don’t want to go.” That’s the best one I think I’ve said so far.
Any more unfinished lines. Hm . . . tries to recall all unfinished lines by Doc There should be an alarm whenever I start going into “Hyper-Doc-Obsessed Mode.” XD
I KNOW!!! I watched it the night before last night and cried. I cry every single time, without fail, when I see that part! It just tears me apart like nothing else does!
I think I cried during that scene when I first noticed there were tears in their eyes. And then, once I played My Wish by Rascal Flatts in the background of that scene, and I cried my eyes out. I still get misty-eyed during that scene, but it isn’t until Mater says, “I didn’t get ta say goodbye” until my tears run down my face.
You know, I never got to see "Cars" until much, much later after it was released on DVD. I don't even want to think about how long I had to wait before I saw it! It makes me sad...!
But when I was walking through Wal-Mart before then, they had "Cars" playing on those big screen TV set ups, and THIS WAS THE SCENE they were showing! I'm not kidding! Of course, the audio wasn't so great, so I couldn't hear what they were saying.
But I honest think that if Lightning had the chance, he would have said something like this:
“Sally…I want you to know…look, I wish I didn’t have to go. I don’t want to go. I want you to know how much I care about this place…about everyone…and about you.”
It is sad that Lightning never got to say what was really on his mind, but you know what? I think Sally knew what he was trying to say. That's kinda the miracle about love... Sometimes you know exactly what the other is thinking and words don't need to be said. Sally probably understood Lightning's frustration that he couldn't put into words what he wanted to say, because that's who Lightning is and she knows that and accepts it. And when Lightning says, "It's just a road," Sally replies, "No...it was much more than that." I think THAT is exactly what Lightning meant to say, but Sally was the one who actually put it into words.
