What you hate about your favourite, love about your least

Basic idea- Take your FAVOURITE Pixar film, and say something you didn’t like about it- perhaps some constructive critique or just a general gripe, could be anything from faulty biology, plot holes, moral questionability, anything.

ALSO take your LEAST favourite Pixar film, and say what you liked BEST about it.

Example:

My favourite movie is Monsters Inc. This mainly relates to the fact they have perhaps the two most relateable characters of Pixar for me- Sulley and Randall, I myself share some things with them, and people I know do also (Example, I’m more or less like Sulley in some ways, I’m m bit parental with my friends etc., though I’m not a complete clone, and my best friend at school was pretty much like Randall, didn’t like me at first for various reasons, and she was a bit mean, but TBH she had her own problems, but hey through various circumstances we eventually became friends- after she dealt with my overbearing mothering attitude anyway. Hee hee.). As I get older I start to relate to both of them more and more in my own way.

What I don’t like should be obvious- the fact Sulley banished Randall, sets a bad example for one, not to mention it cannot be seen as anything but illegal if their world is to make sense (It has trials etc.), not to mention ‘sulleying’ (agh! I can’t help but reuse this pun!) Boo’s and Sulley’s relationship a tad. Plus, I just happen to like Randall, he’s second to Sulley in my list.

My LEAST favourite was Cars. Mainly because it wasn’t as original as other Pixars, not to mention… I felt it difficult to empathsise with the machines in the beginning, plus I kept wondering “HOW DO THEY REPRODUCE?” throughout it all. I couldn’t help but wonder what on earth would identify a female and guy car for instance.

But I LIKED was that it had a great protaganist arc- it showed a selfish guy eventually begin to learn to care about other people outside of himself and learn from his mistakes, while I wish they hadn’t gone for CARS as their designs, but instead people or even anthropomorphic people like M.I. instead, I like Lightening for this reason and overall the story had a good moral basis (even if it wasn’t that original).

So what about you? What did you dislike about your favourite (however small) and what did you like about your least?

Very nice thread, mentalguru! I like!

Well, my favourite Pixar movie is Toy Story. I love the characters, the story, how the animation never seems to date and the soundtrack is just brilliant. I love the way it makes me feel when I watch it. So, what don’t I like about it?

That’s a tough one. I guess I’ve never really liked how quick the toys were to turn against Woody- part of me felt that, character-wise, it wasn’t entirely believable. But even then, I can’t help but think that what happened does sort of make sense as the toys are a big group, so a lot of them would’ve followed the lead of others such as Mr. Potato Head, who had no problem voicing their opinion, and so there could even be an element of peer pressure.

I really can’t think of anything else I dislike about Toy Story.

And my least favourite Pixar film is Ratatouille, but despite it being down at the bottom of my ‘Pixar chart’, there are plenty of things I love about it, one thing in particular being the character of Anton Ego. The flashback to his childhood is one of my favourite scenes in any Pixar film!

I also like the strong French accents of some of the characters (though the opposite is one of the things I most dislike about the film) and I love the setting- Pixar really caught the essence of Paris.

Well, right now, my heart is with “Up,” so I’ll consider that as my favorite - and honestly, I’m not sure I can pick something to really dislike about it. I could go back and nitpick again about the “Get off of his (roof)!” line for Dug, but it’s a really trivial nitpick and not that big a deal. There was a time when I wasn’t 100% sold on the final shot, but after hearing the guys explain on the commentary track how it symbolizes the completion of Carl’s journey, they’ve convinced me they did the right thing. I mean it, I’m really having trouble finding significant fault with the movie, or even much of anything to dislike.

Flip side - Oh, man, I hate to even confess what my least favorite Pixar movie is, since it’s so popular with a lot of people here, but I admired Wall-E a lot more than I loved it. It’s creative and well done, and I would have been happy to see it get a Best Picture Oscar nomination, but I just didn’t have the gut emotional connection with it that I’ve had with “Up” and some others. That said - I am a big, long-time fan of the movie version of “Hello, Dolly!” and really enjoyed how that was incorporated into the story. One of my favorite Pixar openings is still that opening credit sequence, with Michael Crawford singing “Put on Your Sunday Clothes” over all the visuals of space.

Well, I absolutely adore Up, but I think that Kevin is a tiny tad bit underdeveloped. And perhaps… I dunnooo… she’s fun to draw tho…

My least fave is Cars. It just didn’t ‘speak’ to me like all other Pixar films did. I do however like how they made everything cars. (well, except for those birds…)

Okay, lemme think…Something I didnt like about Cars…Maybe the fact that there are unanswered questions about how their world works. (How DO they reproduce?) But that doesnt take anything away from me enjoying the movie.

Now my least favorite. That’s tough because I’m not totally certain on what my least favorite is. I’m thinking it was Up. Not because I thought it was bad. On the contrary, I thought it was technically very good. It’s just not a movie I’d want to own, or watch a whole lot. I think I saw it 4 times and that was more than enough. That being said, there was quite a bit I liked about it. One of them being Alpha with the funny voice! I found that very amusing.

Urm I’m going to say my favourite is Wall-e but it really is a tough choice. Something I dislike about it? I seem to remember reading/hearing that the humans aren’t meant to be cgi and that the idea is they have started to look like that through out their time in space. I may be wrong about this, but isnt it the reason for having the live actor at the start of the film?

If it is the case I would say that its the bit I like the least about the film, It just seems odd to me, don’t know why though.

As for least favourite film, I would go with Cars. Something I like about it? Well it looks fantastic and the credits where they change old films into cars made me laugh

My favorite Pixar film is undeniably Wall-E. What is it I don’t like… Hmmmm…
Maybe that darn Pong game Wall-E was trying to play with EVE. The first time I saw it, I was delighted… but realistically, that Atari wouldn’t be working 700+ years… Heck, most Atari’s won’t even work by 2021! And so, every time I watch the film, my brain kinda rejects that scene and pretends it never happened…

My least favorite film is probably Ratatouille. What I liked about this film… hmm… This one’s easy. I’ll never forget the line “I Killed A guy; With this thumb!”. I’ll be quoting that for the rest of my life. :sunglasses:

My favorite/least favorite Pixar movie is hard to chose, because I love them all, but I just go with WALL-E as my favorite. What I didn’t like about it is that they never showed any kids throughout the whole movie, which REALLY got on my nerves, because it seemed illogical.

For my least favorite…I’ll just go with A Bug’s Life. I love the characters of Flik and Hopper and the lighting throughout the whole film is gorgeous!

Regarding my favorite, Monsters, Inc., the thing I disliked so much about it is the same thing that the OP, Mentalguru, disliked. The REASON it’s my favorite is because of that one character with whom I can relate so well, and the treatment of that character, and the subsequent treatment of many others who are also guilty of crimes as being heroes left me feeling cold, to say the least. I was expecting to end that movie feeling as I did after leaving Lilo and Stitch, and instead I felt like I’d been kicked to the pavement.

On the other hand, there’s my least favorite Pixar film, Finding Nemo. I just could not really relate to any of the characters their situations as I could with M.I., not being a parent and not being a little kid, either. The one great thing about it, though, was the fact that this time around, Pixar didn’t feel the need to fall back onto that old, jaded “Good Guys vs. Bad Guys” theme. There are no villains in FN. There ARE antagonists, but they aren’t portrayed as “evil” or “mean” for the sake of hurting others, not even Darla. She’s just a hyperactive five-year-old who does not and probably CANNOT comprehend the negative ramifications of her actions towards the fish, since she is at an age when most kids simply still don’t realize that animals are living things that can feel pain, too. Most kids at that age cannot even really understand the concept of death. The dentist doesn’t mean to cause any harm; he doesn’t realize that what he does(capturing fish)is stressful to the animals. He isn’t doing that to be mean or cruel. Even the three sharks, who seem so threatening, turn out to prove that you cannot always judge a book by its cover. When I first saw the stills for the movie, before its release, and saw the pictures of Bruce with that big, toothy grin, I thought, “Uh-Oh, guess he’s this movie’s version of Randall, which means this shark is gonna be fish stew by the time is all said and done”, but thankfully, Andrew Stanton chose not to go that route. As it turns out, the REAL conflict isn’t between a “good” and an “evil” character, but rather, it involves Marlin’s defeating his own “demons” within, namely, his smothering overprotectiveness of his son and his lack of courage and willingness to “let go”. In the end, instead of some “bad guy” having been beaten up and/or killed and some “hero” having been put up on a pedastal, we see all of the major characters getting along, in spite of their differences. There are no loose ends; we aren’t left wondering “did he die or not”, or “why did this one get away with doing something wrong, and THAT one got beaten up for it?” While it might not have been my favorite Pixar film, at least Finding Nemo didn’t leave me with a bad feeling of having been cheated or short-changed.

^ sigh Oh my word, you guys seriously had to bring that up again…?? :unamused:

Most Favorite: Toy Story

What I didn’t like: The fact that nothing is said about Andy’s dad, seriously. Were his parents divorced, was his mom a single mom, was his dad in the military? That’s what bugged me.

Least Favorite: Cars

What I did like: The only racing movie I have ever seen that can take the sport of Nascar and can make it look interesting.

Favorite: Toy Story
Disliking: Andy seems to be a messy, “skater” laptop addict guy, like the “average” teen. I HATE the way every time people think of teens, theynjust think texting and skateboards and messiniess, and all that. I’m completely the opposite! But oh well…

Least Favorite: Cars
Liking: the way everything is car-themed, like “Carborator Canyon” or whatever. Very clever

Random gripe: The live action people in Wall-E. They could have easily animated realistic people, like we’ve seen in Toy Story…but no! Still one of my favorites though.

Favorite: WALL-E
It’s hard to pick what I dislike about WALL-E. I got mad at Auto when he pushed the button and smashed WALL-E.

Least Favorite: Ratatouille
I liked the part when Linguini was sleeping and Remy put the sunglasses on him and made him look like he was cooking while Colette was talking to him and Linguini gives her a funny look.

Favorite: A Bug’s Life
What I didn’t like about it … hard to say. I guess the only thing I wish they’d included was the time in-between saving the colony and the Circus bugs leaving. You know, they probably had to stay with them during the winter.

Least Favorite: The Incredibles
The only thing I really liked about it was it’s sense of family. Other than that, mehh.

This is all interesting! I’m kind of hoping myself that EVERY Pixar movie gets the opportunity for something bad or good said about it eventually.

Its interesting to hear what people feel about certain Pixar movies in that regard and I think it can sharpen critique skills too- remind people to take off the rose coloured specs for their favourites and not be doom and gloom about the one’s they weren’t as keen on perhaps. Even if it’s just for a little bit. Even if, yes it’s probanbly hard!

My favorite?? It’s a tie b/t Toy Story 2 and The Incredibles, so I’ll do both.

Toy Story 2 Dislike:I get mad every time Woody, Buzz, Jessie, or any of the toys gets hurt. I cried during the new trailer

The Incredibles Dislike: I wish we got more Helen and Bob, as well as a sequel.

My least is Finding Nemo by far; so depressing and boring.

Like: Dory and the opening Score right after Marlin finds Nemo’s egg <3

Favorite: Up
Dislikes: Some parts of the movie I got kinda confused with, I still don’t really know who this Phyllis person Russel talks about.
Least Favorite: The Incredibles
I thought the jungle animation and music were both awesome.

Phyllis is Russell’s stepmother. Why don’t you like The Incredibles??? No jk…

Oh, ok. I was thinking she was either his stepmother or sister.
LOL i don’t know, it’s still awesome. maybe i see it on tv too often. :stuck_out_tongue:

Yeah, it is on TV the most of Pixar films…
