What's on your mind? (Status Updates)

On my mind: OMG WHAT IS THIS WITH MUNTZ AND THE OSCARS.

Yes, I have a lot of issues…

Heehee! Yep, the guy presenting looked like him, he was quiet…elderly lol.

You’re talking about Kirk Douglas? He was Muntz in a famous premake on You Tube:

Kinda miffed that ‘How to Train Your Dragon’ was practically snubbed this year, though I’m kinda glad ‘Toy Story 3’ won Best Animated Ghetto. Will the Pixar underdog win the Big Fish, or will the title go to a stuttering Colin Firth or an asinine Jesse Eisenberg?

^ Do you still have doubts? 8D

/really unpopular opinion for the forums. Look away now.

Personally I did not think TS3 should get the the Best Picture prize at all even though overall it was a good movie (granted I wanted HTTYD to win best animated, but that was really unlikely to happen anyway)- I actually wanted the best picture award to go to the Kings Speech myself. Though I think Inception had a better chance to win it for some reason and it’s my second favourite so… I haven’t seen Social Network so I can’t really judge. But I think it might have had a good shot as well- though I’ve heard complaints over that idea and that it wasn’t that great, it was a serious contender.

There were a lot of good movies for the oscars to consider this year- it was better than the year before at the very least for me personally (though 2009 wasn’t terrible either), and if TS3 don’t win best picture it’s definitly understandable rather than it simply being ‘prejudice’ against animation this time. (Granted I didn’t think Up deserved the nomination for best picture period when it got it- this time yes I can see the nomination reasons for TS3, even though it shouldn’t win on the basis of their competition, which may sound weird, but eh- there are some pictures where yes I think a nomination is deserved and an honour but I don’t think they should win overall all the same).

I don’t think TS3 deserved ‘best picture’. Is it a good picture? Yes. But it’s not the best on the nomination list in my opinion though it’s not a surprise it’s been nominated for the category (despite my own prefrences). But do I think it should/has a good chance of winning even if we take away the idea of animation prejudice anyway? No it does not. There were great movies out there regardless of whatever medium they’ve been put in not just animation. 2010 was a pretty good year.

/You can look back now. :stuck_out_tongue:

In any case I do still wish there were more categories and there was a better way of voting for animation oscar nominations- of course 2010 was a year of quality not quantity for animation it seems so perhaps it’s time they eventually rethink how they decide nominations of the best animation award.

I kind of wish Megamind, Tangled and Despicable Me had at least a sniff of the best animated award before their dreams being utterly crushed (the latter of which I watched recently). If I had to stick to 5… I guess DM is unfortnatly the one most likely to not get in despite Tangled actually being my least favourite of the lot- I still like it though! (Then again I like MM that bit more despite really liking DM). I mean it’s unlikely either of those three would win best animated at all, but I’d like them to be nominated all the same.

But there were so many good movies this year especially in animated. It’s almost surprising TS3 was the -only- animated film nominated for best picture honestly. I could see other contenders and I’m hoping that eventually dreamwOrks or Blue sky or some other company get a nomination for best picture some day.

I mean the 2010 Oscar nominations are weird for me, almost all the movies I’ve managed to see I’ve LIKED on some level and I wish there were more nomination slots for certain movies to get recognition. I mean preferences certainly but still.

Granted I haven’t seen every single one on the nomination categories (I haven’t seen the mysterious dark horse entering the best animated picture third slot) but still…

mentalguru: Wow, you virtually have my same opinions! I was rooting for The King’s Speech for best picture. That was my favorite film I saw this year. TS3 defintely deserved a nomination, but I don’t think it deserved Best Picture. I also am sad that only 3 films were nominted for Best Animated film. I would of loved to see Despicable Me and Tangled be recognized, but I know the rules. Maybe if the Academy would of accepted Yogi Bear and a few other films for Best Animated, then there’d be 5 pictures nominated, not just 3. That would of been great!

About 5 hours and 15 minutes before another audition. I’ve been haven’t had a good few weeks. i hope this month and the rest of the year is different.

NOT a good Academy Awards ceremony this year. There were high points, though.

It was a somewhat quiet ceremony. Not very interesting (but luckily not as boring as past year’s)

We need Billy Crystal again!

I can agree with that. I was just displeased with some aspects of the ceremony. That’s all.

As awesome as Franco is, he was a lazy host. Anne tried hard to keep the enthusiasm, but it didn’t really work.

I love Anne. But I agree, he was quite a stinker.

As I mentioned to Virginia earlier on facebook, it’s a shame he kept dragging Anne down. And man, can that woman sing!

I understand why people hate second chance in black ops. but come on, it’s not that bad. You are just too lazy to finish the job.

Wish me a broken leg. I have an audition in about 40 minutes.

Break a leg! I hope it goes well.

Had a good audition. Now I’m at home, trying to fall asleep. But I feel too electrified.

I agree, SOA, and more Kirk Douglas!

TSS: Best of luck for your auditions! You can do it!

EJE, IV, and SoA, I agree with you on Franco. He… smacks lips, thumbs-down sign

But Anne was lovely, wasn’t she? Poor girl.

Mentalguru, again, I agree with your sentiments. TS3 was really disappointing for me this year, I myself have seen Social Network but not King’s Speech. Inception was also my second favourite.

I also felt the same about Up last year, about the same time I felt that Pixar was tugging on the heartstrings a bit much. Though, Up still had a cheerful vibe despite the dark overtones. I also was rooting for another film to win last year- it was Avatar, and I’m not ashamed to admit it. Yes, it’s a story that has been told before, but god-d***, the passion, the amount of time and love they spent on it, the story, and the performances by Weaver and Saldanha… it just blew me away. But then that above-average movie about a jarhead defusing roadside bombs in Iraq had to win.

I agree that as much as I want Pixar (or any animation studio) to break the barrier, Toy Story 3 should not be the one to do it. It didn’t feel right, especially when up against equally great fare. Wall-E or the first Toy Story, heck, even Beauty and the Beast, shoulda done it, but not this year. Hopefully Brave will be the landmark moment we’ve all been waiting for. Or Cars 2, though i seriously, seriously doubt that.

I would’ve added Legend of the Guardians to the list. If you haven’t seen it, I highly recommend it (I keep plugging it here, but very few folks here seem to have acknowledged seeing it). It has a fairly Joseph Campbell kind of storyline (one Sydney reviewer even called it ‘Star Wars for birds’), but it was 2010’s Avatar for me. A familiar story giving fresh blood and awe-inspiring visuals… and I can see that effort was put in. The Illusionist, I haven’t seen, but I’ve heard scandals about the family it was based on, and it has a depressing story like TS3, so I doubt I’ll be seeing it anytime soon, though I love the traditional hand-drawn style.

EJE: I really, really want to see The King’s Speech now. I predict I’ll be crying man-tears when Geoffrey Rush convinces Colin Firth that he can do it!
Oh yeah, congrats on the car! Driving is one of the most liberating experiences anyone can have, and you’re really lucky to own one. I’m a cars fan and I have a license but no wheels, yet!

Exhausted after a long day of writing post-Oscars opinion here and elsewhere, and attending an interesting lecture in school today. I’ve kind of gotten over my bitterness at the Oscars and will probably write an afterthought journal entry in dA.

On a lighter note, guess which movie I’ll be attending an advance screening for on Thursday? That’s right folks, it is I, your much-anticipated hero!

I got an assignment from my uni magazine to cover it, and I’ll be seeing it with other press reporters one week before anyone else in Australia! And at the Paramount Office screening theatre in Sydney too, no doubt!

Can’t wait.

i really hate spammers. And I’m feeling really exhausted right now.
