TexAvery’s shorts (He was all over the place, really)

I’m not sure if this is the right place or not, if it isn’t then feel free to remove it and throw me to the dogs.
I was just wondering which animated shorts you prefer? Do you like the friendly sincere world of Mickey Mouse and the other Disney characters? Or are you more of a fan of the Anarchy that came with Bugs, Daffy, and the rest of the Looney Tunes.
Or perhaps you want to throw a spanner in the works and choose Tom & Jerry or Tex Avery’s classic cartoons (Well, i beat you to it smart guy!..or girl!)
I’m just curious to see who favors what around here.
So let’s all be lovely and democratic and have a vote!
I was never really that keen on the Disney shorts. Mickey has to be one of the most irritating animated characters ever created, and most of the others weren’t much better. Donald was at least slightly appealing with his speech impediment and anger problem, as he was less ‘perfect’ than all the other characters, but he also became annoying.
And Tom and Jerry just freaks me out. Even as a kid, I always thought of Jerry as being really cruel, but the fact that his nasty nature is never realised by anyone else other than Tom, who is simply doing what is instinctive to him, makes him come across as a really horrible character.
I guess the same could be applied to some of the Looney Tunes characters, especially Wile E. Coyote and the Road Runner for instance, but I find them to be a lot more appealing nonetheless. There’s also something about the animation of the Looney Tunes that actually changes over time in terms of style, and I quite like that. And the characters are so much more iconic- my friends and I still bring up Marvin the Martian in conversations (his voice is just fantastic) and Daffy Duck is just awesome. (Though we all agree that Bugs sucks. ) I was brought up on Looney Tunes so I guess it makes sense for me to choose those shorts over the others, but I have no desire to watch the other animated shorts now whilst on the other hand, I desperately want to get my hands on some Looney Tunes DVDs!
I absolutely love the Looney Tunes shorts! I recently bought Looney Tunes Golden Collection volume 1. I grew up with them so they bring a sense of nostalgia to me. The animation is brilliant. I love how the animators pushed just how fast they could make a movement and still have it read. Daffy Duck is probably my favorite character of the bunch as one of my favorite shorts is Duck Amuck.
I don’t like all Disney shorts. Some are very run-of -the-mill. But I think others are genius! And as for Mickey Mouse, they really wimpified him. If you look at the earliest Mickey, he is daring, smart, and even a little mean at times. However, once he got so popular, the company glorified him, using him less and less for comedy shorts, until he became what he is today: a symbol of the Disney company and not much more. Oh yes, they make a good deal of merchandicing off of him, but everytime they really try to bring him back with his new image, it always fails. [/b]
Mickey (And friends) and Looney Tunes shorts were the best!!
Man, I sure wish they made cartoons like those these days… Nothing will ever outclass those cartoons.
Who likes short shorts? I like short shorts!
Sorry, I couldn’t help myself
Looney Tunes was a fundamental part of my upbringing. I also grew up on Tom & Jerry. I haven’t had the opportunity to watch many Disney shorts (they never regularly shown it during my time in the 90s).
1986 - I agree with you. Slightly. I agree that Mickey got more “sensible” and more of a “role model” during the years, but I don’t think they had a choice. M.M. became the natural icon of Disney, and who would want their company to be represented by a nasty rodent? I quite like the kinder figure of Mickey In My (very) Humble Opinion.
Some of them are really good like Tom and Jerry, or Looney Tunes etc. I prefer though, 30-minute shows like the Simpsons or King of the Hill. They seem to go fast, like a short cartoon. Anyways, I voted for Tom and Jerry because they’re just…uh…good! Looney Toons would be a strong second though. They’re all origanal and some of the non-theatrical Looney tunes are classics.
I chose Tom and Jerry purely because they are the shorts i used to watch the most as a child. I would say I prefer Looney Toons now however, purely for Wile E Coyote and Daffy.
There were a few disney shorts i used to love, and this thread has prompted me to go find them on youtube. They were both christmas cartoons that i always watched as a child…happy days
I’m more of a Looney Tunes fan than Pixar fan ( I know, hard to believe!) I love the greats like Chuck Jones, Friz Freleng, Bob Clampett, and Tex Avery!!! I am such a Bug’s Bunny Nut!!!
Close behind is Tex Avery. He had wonderful cartoons at Warner Brothers, and MGM. Especially his Wolf and Red Cartoons.
Disney shorts were okkay, nothing compared to Looney Tunes. And I do not like Tom and Jerry at all, even the Chuck Jones ones!!!
For any animation fans out there, the best animation book I’ve ever read was Chuck Jones’s “Chuck Amuck” a must read if you call your self a fan of animation! Even if you’re not a Looney Tune person, I recomend you to read it!
I am a big fan of the old Looney Tunes shorts! I have seen quite a few and yet I know there’s still some I’ve never seen. My fam has a lot of them on DVD. I love Marvin the Martian, and I was always more partial to Daffy than I was to Bugs. I find Elmer Fudd particularly funny too
I remember liking some of the Disney ones, but I havent seen any in so long I dont remember them much. Plus I havent seen nearly as many of those as I have of the Looney Tunes ones. I remember liking the ones where Mickey Donald & Goofy were a team doing stuff. Particularly one about a haunted house.
