Who should have been nominated for an Academy Award?

In this topic, list who you think should have been nominated for an

Academy Award for their voice work in a Pixar film.

Mine are:
Tim Allen (Buzz Lightyear) for Best Actor

in Toy Story
Kevin Spacey (Hopper) for Best Supporting Actor in A Bug’s Life
Tom Hanks (Woody) - for Best

Actor in Toy Story 2
Albert Brooks (Marlin) for Best Supporting Actor in Finding Nemo
Ellen DeGeneres

(Dory) for Best Supporting Actress in Finding Nemo
Craig T. Nelson (Mr. Incredible) for Best Actor in The

Incredibles
Paul Newman (Doc Hudson) for Best Supporting Actor in Cars

The reasons are:
Tim Allen -

He gives such a strong and humorous performance in such a groundbreaking film that he deserved an award. Plus, he

gave one of the most popular movie quotes ever.

Kevin Spacey - Hopper is such a clever and frightening

character that was brilliantly portrayed by Kevin Spacey. Although he does not appear too much in the film, some

of his lines are pure nomination-worthy.

Tom Hanks - Although he did a terrific job as Woody in the

original, I feel that more story was given to him in the sequel. He shined in Toy Story, but in Toy Story 2 he is

faced with hard decisions and such depth.

Albert Brooks - There were some very moving scenes in the film

(such as when he thinks Nemo is dead) that I consider Oscar-worthy.

Ellen DeGeneres - She is a total riot

in the film. Hilarious. However, certain scenes - like when Marlin leaves her when he believes Nemo is dead -

were great. As she would say it, “When I’m with you, I’m home.”

Craig T. Nelson - It may be a

surprise that I consider his work worthy of a nomination, but his character deals with not being famous anymore

and having the opportunity to be a superhero again. On top of that, he feals defeated after he thinks his family

was killed. His work should have been recognized for the scene when he called himself "not strong

enough."

Paul Newman - Although he gets next to top billing, I feel that Doc Hudson was more of a

supporting role. I felt the character had not enough screen time, but the times he did appear, they were very

moving.

That is my list. Now it is time for you to share your opinions and thoughts. Such a topic like

this has not really yet been discussed. I hope everyone shares their views!

I’m just gonna steal your list there and use it as my own. It’s just that accuracte of my

own thoughts. The other day I was thinking “Paul Newman for Best Supporting Actor!”

Sadly, I

think there’s a stigma about giving acting awards to people where only their voice is shown. Methinks they much

prefer to see real live acting. It would take the best voice acting in the world to overcome this, but until

then, we’re facing the pre-LotR Fantasy bias.

You picked some real obvious choices … and I agree with most. But, you missed a couple of very

good supporting vocal stars:

From Toy Story 2:
Kelsey Grammer … he’s

superb as Stinky Pete the Prospector – almost convinces Woody to become a museum-piece.
Robert

Goulet as the singing Wheezy – what a combo Joe Rant and Bob Goulet.
And, Jeff

Pidgeon … the voice of Pizza Planet’s Aliens, (which always crack me up). the Speak and Spell,

a toy robot and other characters in both Toy Story and TS2. He’s also a gifted Pixar artist who has been with

the studio since Toy Story and has lent his voice to a half-dozen great characters.

From Finding

Nemo:
In addition to those you’ve mentioned: Geoffrey Rush as the pelican and

the Aussie actor who voiced Bruce the lead shark.

From A Bug’s Life:
Jonathan Harris

as the magician praying manthis and Phylis Dillar as the elderly

queen ant. But Joe Ranft as Heimlich will always be among my all-time favorites.

Everytime I see candy corn – as Halloween nears, it’s in season – I can’t help but smile.

From The

Incredibles:
Brad Bird as Edna Mole … what a riot. His turn was so good that

Lilly Tomlin decided against taking the role. She said Bird’s scratch recording nailed down the character and

that she would be unable to improve upon what he did.

From Monsters Inc:
Bob Patterson

as Roz … another great character voice from an artist working at Pixar. I think Patterson also

voiced Mr. Ray – the teacher – in Finding Nemo … I hope to memorize his song some day.

From

Cars:
All the vocal stars from Radiator Springs (especially Michael Walllis and Tony Shallub) – great casting

– and the stunt casting with Bob Costas, Click and Clack and the professional racecar drivers. That said, I

would have loved to have heard the scratch recording for Mater featuring Joe Ranft … I’ve seen video of Ranft

doing his hillbilly SlingBlade character and I can imagine him really shining in the role given to Larry the

Cable Guy.

I agree that I picked more obvious

choices, but most of the ones mentioned in your list had very minor roles. I agree that some of them were very

good, like Joe Ranft as Heimlich and Brad Bird as Edna Mode, but the one on your list I would totally agree with

that I forgot would be Kelsey Grammer for Best Supporting Actor in Toy Story 2. I just think all of the others -

very good performances, but small - did not have enough screen time. The ones I chose - plus Kelsey Grammer on

your list - had enough character development that would make them most likely to deserve a nomination.

I have many nominees. Coincidentally, they are all from the Incredibles.

Craig T.

Nelson: His stong voice work gave power and impact to this strong character. He wonderfully acts funny, sad, and

always kept me on the edge of my seat.
Holly Hunter: Incredible work from this talented actress. No other

person could play Helen Parr better than Holly Hunter. She acts like the perfect mom really well in the

movie.
Sarah Vowell: Violet, sweet, cute, shy, and absoutlely done really well. Sarah Vowell inputed emotion

and feeling into Violet Parr. Her voice work blew me away. Incredible job from her.
Spencer Fox: Absolutely

adoreable Spencer Fox. He played Dash so marvelously. He portrayed the little mischivious 10 year old boy so

well.
Brad Bird: Dahling, must I say it? He won the Anine Award for Best Voice Work in a Feature Animated

Film. Why shouldn’t he deserve an Academy Award for it?
