There’s something in the first Toy Story that’s always made me wonder. I’ve noticed how most of the toys can speak, but the mutant toys that live in Sid’s house don’t say a word for a the duration of the whole film. Just wondering, why is this?
well…the duck quacks…Legs has no way to talk…i think that they are good enogh characters without speaking.
Most likely has something to do with the fact that they were mutated and are now unable to talk. Ducky can still quack because Sid didn’t actually break his Pez dispenser head.
Because it makes them scarier. Simple as that.
If they had dialogue, they wouldn’t be as creepy for Woody, and it wouldn’t have been as shocking when they fixed Buzz.
Then they could have just explained what was happening.
Silence causes an audience to draw their own conclusions.
Well, we all know the reason Pixar did it, just so it’d be easier for them to be misunderstood, but I think he’s just looking for a technical explanation.
Well, how many of their voice boxes remained intact? Doesn’t seem like many. Seems like your head would have to stay on the proper body. And Janey’s mouth is sewn on, so maybe it can’t move.
Perhaps once a toy is torn apart it can’t speak anymore? And maybe the mutant toys just don’t want to speak? The just like being silent helpers.
This.
Then again, there’s Dolly, and she can certainly speak. Chatter Telephone, on the other hand, has a painted mouth, and that doesn’t work. I guess Janie still is able to speak, since she was supposed to say Red Rum (though that only happens in the Spanish dub). I guess her not speaking before could be attributed to shyness, which after the operation, I wouldn’t blame her.
We do know that it’s not a choice for them to talk, too. Babyface has to rely on morse code. Rockmobile can still make some electronic noises, since the Rocky Gibraltar doll that Sid took apart was electronic.
I still stand by my theory that it’s due to the mutations, though Wikipedia threw out the possibility of shock being the reason they don’t speak.
Well these are some pretty helpful explainations. Thanks for the info so far everyone.
then what about woody? in ts2, his whole arm falls off.
i think the reason they dont talk is because they have a diffrent culture (or a room in this case ) …they’re natives in a way.
they communicate in diffrent ways rather than talking…wich makes sense that baby face did morse code to call the other mutant toys.
Yeah but they have the same attributes no matter where they go, like if Sid got a Buzz he would most likely still act the same as Andy’s rather than just not talk right off arrival, of course Sid’s torture could change him.
About a voicebox, Lenny speaks, and he’s got no form of mouth or anything, and he isn’t even based off anything that makes sounds like how Chatter Telephone’s phone can somehow make noise, so wether or not a toy can talk seems random, not based on design or anything.
Good point. Another explanation could probably be that their lives are so miserable in Sid’s room that they wouldn’t want to speak.
I never though of that
I guess the mutant toys can’t talk because their heads, hands, legs, etc. Are on diffrent parts and can’t talk.
Because it’s better if they didn’t talk and makes them seem creepier as people have said.
