I really felt it was out of place to see Sid[spoil] lowered to a garbage man, basically in Toy Story 3 they said “So Sid became a low wage employee for life, while Andy goes for a brilliant future at university” I think this was totally out of place and I will explain my points.[/spoil]
About Sid beign evil:
First of all Sid was evil from the toys point of view, I can as well be evil from my real strategy games characters point of view everytime I nuke their nations as far as I am concerned. Sid didnt knew the toys were alive and as far as I know toys are meant for be used in the way you please. He was very cruel yes, but I dont think he crossed the line of evilness, actually he displayed hints of beign nice in the third film he turned out to be a nice guy.
About the[spoil] “Garbage Man”:[/spoil]
I was really surprised to see him ending this way, I mean just read at the monsters inc comics. It almost appeared that while other boys were playing with their toys, studying for the exam and were worried about their girlfriend, Sid was defiling the laws of space-time as he discovered how to travel freely from human world to monster world and vice-versa, not only that at least the comics portray him at a genius level it appear he spent a great ammount of prep-time studying monstropolis prisons, security etc. Leaving the “I will get rid of all toys” thing, Sid actually had vision as he planned to discover the mechanics of the interdimensional-travel technology and become rich by selling the idea in this world (which somehow was viewed as wrong and had to be stopped). While everyone was dreaming of their future careers Sid was too impatient to wait 20 years just to start working and decided to get the plans of the technology and get uber rich right now, I see no wrong in this. It is called having vision. Basically the guy:
Achieved something no human in history has ever achieved (to travel to the monster world and back at will)
Was to cool to conform with the common way and planned a unique way to become rich.
Was capable of pass through all monstropolis security.
Yet he was somehow punished by no reason in the third movie and ended up as [spoil]the garbage man with a low waged job,[/spoil] I felt Sid was overpunished when the only crime he did was beign unique.

EDIT- Please do not reveal spoilers in the titles of posts, nor in the content of the posts themselves. Thanks!
Sorry you feel that way about Sid. the comics are not “canon,” so PIXAR was never bound by those stories when writing the film.
Also, Garbage people make quite a bit of money actually. Getting up toward 100,000 a year in the higher posts. I think Sid seemed happy in his work, and I also think it was a fitting fate for him and a good one. Just because someone does not fit the mold of “do well in school, go to college” does not mean that they have a bad life.
Exactly my point, he didnt fit the “do well in school” mold so they turn him in the garbage man. Sid is more like the “Im going rich in 1 month” deal, at least thats what he showed at the comics.
I moved this thread to a more proper location: here in the Toy Story thread, so other Toy Story fans would hear what you have to say about Sid.
And also, Haoasakura, please be careful and more selective with your language. I’m pretty sure there are other words that you could use besides that word that I had to edit so frequently in your posts.
Me, I was just relieved to see that he was doing alright. Following the events of the first Toy Story film, and his encounter with the toys in their “alive” mode, I know that a lot of us had visions of him being scarred for life (Woody even acknowledged this probability in the original storyboards). As ArtJoe points out, he seemed perfectly happy in his job. It may not be the most glamorous career in the world, but that doesn’t make it worthless. And besides, what makes you so sure he’ll be doing it for the rest of his life anyway? He’s still very young. I had a couple of low-paying jobs before I went to university.
I didn’t read this thread, just the title.
If Sid happens to appear in TS3, I consider this something of a spoiler.
Please be more careful with thread titles until TS3 has finished its “theatrical world tour”, thanks.
Yes, he was evil from the toy’s point of view, but the toy’s point of view is the whole movie. Plus, I wouldn’t exactly think his room is normal for human standards either.
The only reason I thought the garbage man thing would be out of place is because he’d be throwing out toys. This wasn’t very surprising either. He was a juvenille delinquient, and he got the job you would’ve expected. Plus, it might also relate to how his dad was seen sleeping in the TV room in the middle of the day.
Yeah, garbage men are actually well paid, so don’t feel too bad for Sid! It is just a dirty job that few people want to do for a living.
Also, (and I am not sure if this is true or not) I think Sid is quite a few years older than Andy. That means he very well could have gone to college (or even is at night school) and just works as a garbage man to pay his tuition.
I heard that Sid was either 10 or 12 in Toy Story, and if Andy was 8 or 6 then he could be even 6 years older placing him at 23/24. You have some good points there love70ways! And I know it’s been said a million times, but yes, Garbage Men make some pretty decent pay.
I think what we’re all forgetting here is that the Pixarians at Pixar actually identify with Sid more than they do with Andy! It was them just having a joke, and they obviously wanted to get Sid in Toy Story 3 somehow, so this was the way that made sense.
Also, the comics are not cannon- if they were, well, it just wouldn’t make sense whatsoever. They don’t even continue the Monsters, Inc. storyline properly, let alone involving Sid.
[spoiler]From the filmmakers’ point of view - somebody tell me where the link was on here - someone posted a link to a blog(?) by one of the Pixar artists/designers who showed some of his work on TS3. There were early designs for a character called simply “Metal Head Garbage Man” - it wasn’t Sid, but he was clearly in the Sid role of the Garbage Man rocking out to his headphones. I’m still guessing that Pixar started with that anonymous garbage man, then someone said, “Hey, wouldn’t it be funny if he was Sid!”
From a story POV, if Andy’s 17, I think Sid is in his early 20s. Maybe he’s working his own way through college, or he decided to just work for a few years after high school, to save up some money while he thinks about his long-term goals. For all we know, he’s working the early shift on the trash truck, then taking afternoon/evening/online classes at the local community college. He seems happy for now, and he’s certainly young enough that he has plenty of time to do all sorts of things with his life. I will say, it’s nice to know the braces worked. [/spoiler]
I had to LOL at this! Sid’s room was pretty darn close to my own when I was a kid! No I certainly did NOT torture toys, but I had the workbench, and I played with explosives, and I even had the black light posters!
My masterwork was two pop cans, one cut up into small triangles, the other filled with firecracker powder with a layer of triangles evey half inch or so. Top it off with a 30 second fuse and it made one heck of a bang! baby’s first shrapnel grenade!
Anyway, I loved all my toys and still miss them. I am also nuts about books! Example from Up:
]remember when kid ellie told Carl she ripped the picture of Paradise Falls right out of a library book? well in my first viewing, I gasped right along with Carl! Lots of people around me gave me looks but I don’t care. Books are sacred!
