I’m sure they’ll probably still go through with it, although without Doc I know I won’t enjoy it as much. But I’d rather have no Doc at all than a Doc with a different voice. And since I’m such a big fan of him, I’m not sure if I’d want to see or hear anything about him “dying”. That would be a downer for me.
And I think it would be a pretty big downer for a lot of children, too. Perhaps too much of a downer. Somehow, Pixar have got to take Doc out of the equation with some kind of convincing storyline that makes his disappearence from Cars 2 seem natural. It’ll be difficult, but Pixar have managed to do well in awkward situations before.
I just can’t see them replacing Doc’s voice, though. Pixar have such pride in their characters, that they themselves become attached to them. I do have to question their motives for wanting to make a Cars 2 in the first place, but if they’re going to do it, then I’m sure they’re going to do it well.
Remember, this is an international adventure, and it centers around Mater and Lightning. Doc could convincingly be absent from a sequel away from Radiator Springs, they might show him in flash backs, or non-speaking scenes briefly in the beginning,
yah that would work…
They wouldn’t stop it. Not only is it pretty far into production, they have Disney the Disney must-have-sequel-no-matter-who-is-not-coming-back attitude on their backs.
They may play a Dark Knight and just use the material he already did. Doc may have a smaller part, then.
If not, they will play a just-about-every-disney-cheapquel-ever-made and just get a new actor.
Edited by KE for shouting.
In the description of Cars 2 I’ve seen so far, lightning and mater travel. If Doc Hudson was going to be in the movie, it probably wasn’t as big as in CARS. (Also it would’nt be imposible to find someone who sounds like the first Doc).
IT’D BE TOTALLY IMPOSSIBLE!!!
How can you replace Paul Newman? How? I just don’t see it.
They always find similar voices. Sometimes they pull it off (like Jerry Orbach’s replacement in Kingdom Hearts 2) or sometimes they don’t.
Either way, I don’t think they can make a Cars 2 without Doc Hudson.
Pixar will still make Cars 2. Did they think they wouldn’t after George Carlin’s death? No. And they’ll still make it due to the fact Pixar is a rebound-like studio. They remained stable after Joe Ranft’s death and they still are. So, it’s OK. And The Dark Knight was still released, so yeah.
If they kill Doc, I’ll cry everytime I watch Cars 2. I mean, I cried when I found out Paul Newman died, and the reason was he wouldn’t be back to play Doc. Just because Doc wouldn’t have a voice actor!
People say they can’t replace Paul Newman’s voice, but I can do a pretty good Doc impersonation. And I’m a girl! If I can replace it, someone else can.
And they just can’t give Doc a smaller role. It’s too far into production to change the script they have. And Doc has a bigger role in this movie than the last one!
The only thing that I see here is that they replace Paul Newman’s voice. Unless he had his lines pre-recorded. That would make me happier than if I got to go out with my celebrity crush.
There are a lot of really good impressionists. Like for example the guy on Youtube who does impressions of the Joker (aka Heath Ledger RIP)

Maybe they’ll find a guy who does a good Paul Newman impression (voice)
OH sorry LightingandDoc
Yes yes exactly what LightningandDoc said.
I think it’s possible to continue the story without Doc Hudson. Paul Newman’s a terrific actor, though, and I would never want to hear his voice being impersonated in a Pixar film (unless the impersonator has superb acting skills). With Slinky Dog or Wheezy, you have more comedic, cartoony characters that don’t harm the story as much if they are replaced.
Sigh, if only Doc’s role were like theirs. But then Cars wouldn’t have been as good without the role Doc played, in fact they probably would have pulled the plug on Cars without Doc. Which, even though I hope they don’t, they might do the same for Cars 2 without Doc…
That’s true. There are other artists out there who are probably capable of replicating Paul Newman’s voice as Doc. For that matter, my wife tells me that I do an eerie impersonation of George Carlin.
Hmm, say LightningandDoc, I wonder if we should send John Lassiter a couple of audition tapes. You do Doc and I’ll take Filmore.
As to Doc’s roll in the movie from what I hear it’s going to center around Lightning and Mater traveling the world. So Doc may or may not have a role in the story anyway.
Earlier someone had asked about a funeral for Doc and how wolud that be explained since cars don’t really die? Well Stanley, Lizzie’s husband was supposed to be dead. So how do you explain that?
As much as I would love to be able to star in Cars 2, I can only do lines that are actually said in the original. I’m not that great at other lines. And I do still have that girliness in my voice. I wasn’t saying that I should be the one to do the new voice, I was just saying that if I can do it, there has to be someone out there (better than me) that can do it.
a funeral for Doc would work for a opening scene
It would work, but I don’t like it. I don’t want to cry immeadiately in the movie. Doc’s my favorite character, so it’d be too sad to have a funeral for him.
Im still thinking how it could work [/spoil]
