With the death of Paul Newman (R.I.P), what about Cars 2?

In light of Paul Newman (Doc Hudson)'s death, so you think PIXAR will still do Cars 2?

So, I know it’s sad to say, but it had to be said sometime.

Rest in Peace Paul Newman.

You may remember him as the voice of Doc Hudson in Cars. The brilliant 3-time Oscar-winner died yesterday due to cancer at the age of 83. He wil dearly be missed.

Now, with this sad happening, I wanted to ask everyone a question: Since Newman’s character in Cars plays such an integral role in the story, do you think PIXAR will still go ahead with Cars 2 and do you think that his character might have played a big role in the story? Or could they possibly get another vioce actor? (I hope they don’t. I hope they don’t even do the sequel.(Sorry, A113 and LightningandSally.)

So, I don’t want it to happen now that he’s gone, but there’s a strong chance that it will.

On this thread, please type in a tribute to Mr. Newman, then say what you want about Cars 2. Also, please answer the poll at the top.

Your thoughts?

i think that the cars 2 movie was rather designed for money problems with cars. I wouldn’t mind them using Lightning again but without Doc it would be kinda hard. Pixar had to know of his cancer problem when they announced Cars 2.

You can’t replace Paul Newman. You just can’t.

You can’t replace George Carlin. You just can’t.

That’s two iconic characters of the movie now gone. I don’t believe that they can continue with the movie. Then again, I didn’t believe that Jim Varney was replaceable, but they’re moving along with Toy Story 3 all the same.

Admin note: The “official” Paul Newman tribute thread is here. Let’s keep everything here related to whether or not they will/can/should do Cars 2.

Do I think it will still be made? Yes, probably.

Do I think it should be made? No. I didn’t really approve of it before the passing away of Paul Newman, but now, I just can’t see how it’s going to work and actually improve on the original.

Of course it will still be made. And the fact that it takes place across the globe means you don’t necessarily have to see any of the previous secondary characters much if at all. (not that Pixar will or should do that.)

One thing’s for sure, though; without the reappearance of Doc, it won’t be a ‘good story.’ However, as we Pixar fans know it, if it isn’t a good story, they won’t do it.

So, the chances are high if Doc isn’t returning. But if his voice is replaced by another voice actor (there is a possibility of that happening due to practical reasons), it might be a good story to the people who don’t notice the difference in voicing (perhaps a tweak in the new actor’s voice to make it similar to Newman’s). Unlikely with the disrespecting elements at presence, but again, practical reasons. Nevertheless, we loyal fans would watch the movie while knowing that the great legend was replaced.

How good a movie can that be? <_<"

I answered No, i’m not sure though.
They already lost the voice actor of Filmore and now Paul Newman…
But i think that they were probably looking forward to this, i remember reading something saying that there were some people who didn’t want to act in a second Cars so it’s sorta confusing…

Depends who the focus is, which seems to be Mater and McQueen so far.

If an equation requires x+y to mark out the accurate answer, I think the ‘perfect’ movie would require the backup characters as well. Of course, with the definition of the term mildly used here.

Despite who the focus is on, someone would notice. Without the comical antics of Rex (and heck, maybe the antics of Sling, too, considering the loss of two voice actors in Cars), the pros those characters provide would not exist in the sequel and it just won’t fit.

In this case, Doc is a rather significant character in the film series, too. After watching Cars 2, people would realize something is missing, something just ain’t right about the film. It just won’t be a good sequel worth making into the theaters.

Of course, if the Pixar staff members can concoct a masterpiece without the appearance of Doc, that would be swell. Hopefully, a miracle can happen here then.

…Where did all the Pixar spirit go?

I’m hearing people basically saying that Pixar can’t do it without this character. Come on people! I want Doc in it as much as the next fan, but if they need to, they can do it without him! Pixar’s gotten through tighter spots before, and they’ve done crazier things! This is Pixar we’re talking about! They’ve may rats cook, robots fall in love, toys come alive, and they started as this tiny little company in a box that had to have drills in case the nearby refinery blew up. I am convinced that, within basic reason, Pixar can do whatever they want and do it well.

Definitely. it’s odd to see such anti-Pixar sentiment in this and the Live Action thread. People were saying the same thing 13 years ago when Toy Story came out. Hasn’t Pixar proved it’s worth? 9 out of 9 hits! Isn’t that enough for you to look forward to their next one.

Hey, not saying that Pixar can’t do it; it’s just a matter of whether if they want to do it. They are good, but they ain’t stupid.

Well, even when Joe Ranft and Jim Varney died, they were still planning a Toy Story 3, so i doubt they’ll cross out this film.

yeah, good point A113. I wonder what my Grandma would say about this…she loved Paul Newman.

Well, it will be a lot different with Newman out of the cast. But I still see Pixar moving on with this project. What might happen is in the first scene, there is a funneral for Doc Hudson, paying homage to Mr. Newman.

Whoa! That’s good thinking TSS! I hope they use that idea! So, if there’s any story writers for Cars 2, use that idea! if it’s okay with TSS of course. 8D

Thank you WBoon. Excellent comeback and great way of getting back on topic!

Or he could just break down or crash (he’s a car, so how could he die of natural causes?) and then they could have a funeral.

You can edit these posts into one is u want, TSS.

TS2: I don’t know if that’s a sarcastic remark or not…

As for the funeral idea, it is… a very heartwarming idea. Sure, Doc Hudson’s death upon the recent Newman death. However, ever think of how the audience would react with this? It’s not about whether the kids would accept the grim state of death - at all. Sure, it would be disrespectful for the Pixar staff to replace Doc’s voice over, but consider this:

Doc Hudson, the character based on The Fabulous Hudson Hornet, a very famous race car in the real world, might possibly be a golden - if not, silver opportunity for a good story, good money and definitely good merchandising. If they just cancel his screen time for good - or, worse, dare I say it, turn him into some floating speck of conscience in Ratatouille style, I don’t think that would be ideal for the Cars franchise.

Seeing that they have decided to make Cars 2 instead of The Incredibles 2 means that they had good hopes for this one before Newman’s death. Now that he’ve died, they’re stuck with the premiering Cars 2 movie. I doubt they are going to risk the production of this film any further.

It’s not just about the spirit, people, as much as I hate to say this - this is the real world.

Man you really make great poins!!! And no, that last comment wasn’t sarcastic.

Well, all I can say is lets hope for the best. But if they replace Doc’s voice It would be sad :frowning: ,but I wouldn’t freak out about it and say:(mocking voice)"Oh,Paul Newman voice is not in there,Cars is a disaster :unamused:  !"If they replaced OW that’s would I would freak out about :open_mouth: !
