you know, i was wondering why woody doesnt have a gun, my dad told me it was because it would be a bad example for kids, but then why buzz have a laser?
Could be because “Woody’s Roundup” was a show for kids. But Woody does have an empty gun holder on his belt, so I guess that would mean that he would have one. The only gun that was seen in Toy Story 2 in relation to Woody was a red toy gun that shoots little plunger darts (Jessie shot one at the cardboard cutout of Woody when she was still mad at him).
Well, when you’re a kid and you get a toy that comes with little removable parts, sometimes you tend to lose pieces of it. Maybe the original Woody doll did come with a plastic gun thing or something, but maybe Andy happened to lose it when he was younger.
I doubt it had anything to do with gun violence or setting a “bad example” in a kid’s movie.
Yeah, but I kind of think it would have to do with the two shows being made in different generations. “Woody’s Roundup” is based on those old 40’s-50’s style shows such as Howdy Doody, while Buzz’s show (which I guess would be Buzz Lightyear of Star Command) is more like something that was made in the 90’s where Saturday morning cartoons were becoming more edgy and violent. On the DVD commentary for Toy Story they even talked about how all the toy commercials at the time they were making the film kind of assaulted kids with loud voices, which is how they came up with that Buzz Lightyear commercial.
Also, shooting lasers at robots in fantasy space adventures probably wouldn’t be thought of as offensive the same way as real guns.
I believe Woody did have a gun. I remember reading it in either this Toy Story storybook I got as a kid from the Scholastic catalog, or I read it on the old toy story website when they use to have interviews from all the characters posted up. Anyway, I remember reading in one of those that Woody lost his toy gun when Andy had the chicken pox(?)
I’m not sure, but I remember reading something about Andy having chicken pox and losing the toy gun. Mind you, I could be wrong. If I still had that storybook then I could rule that out. Then that would leave the interviews, but the interviews got taken off the site years ago.
Exactly what I was going to say. Also notice that Al was ecstatic at finding the hat but did not look for a gun. Why would the insane toy collecting completest not equip Woody with a gun? Because there never was one. Case closed
I never really thought about this, but now it’s been brought up, I’d agree with the idea that it was to avoid losing small parts. Woody’s hat, for example, though removable is quite large in comparison to the size the gun would have to be to fit into his holster, and kids and little parts just don’t go well.

Hold up there, Whats more important-the gun or a hat? I doubt the animators at Pixar would really care to give mention to a gun that was possibly there.
Well, there was the one deleted scene for the opening of Toy Story, where Andy was having a duel with Woody, although I can’t recall if Woody had a gun with him. All I remember is Andy had a blowdryer!
I used to wonder this, because when I was little I never understood what the holster was for. Al would have looked for it, and I don’t recall seeing it in the Woody’s roundup show, or on any merchandise, and when Woody did the whole “Stick 'em up thing”, he just used his hands. Although with him being a sheriff, and the whole “Reach for the sky” thing, you’d think he would. I guess he was supposed to be the friendly sheriff, no violence. I don’t know, this is an interesting point. Someone should ask John Lasseter.
This is kind of the point of the whole movie isn’t it?
Mr. Potatohead: “Hey, Woody. How come you don’t have a laser?”
Buzz is simply newer and has things that Woody just doesn’t have. Woody has to learn to accept that Andy will always have a special place in his heart for him anyway.
Woody came out back in the 1950s, according to the movies, and it may not have been as common for children’s toys to come with weapons. Buzz Lightyear is a more modern toy that came out near the release of the first Toy Story movie, as we learn from Tour Guide Barbie when she says, “Back in 1995, short-sited retailers did not order enough dolls to meet demand.” It was common for all action-figures to come with weapons in the 80s and 90s, of course, so the fact that they were just released in completely different eras could answer the question.
And, I think that as was posted earlier, that Al (of Al’s Toy Barn) would definitely have looked for BOTH Woody’s hat AND gun if he had originally come with a gun. The fact that he did’t even mention it should be a clue that it never even existed.
something i have noticed is that in the first pixar films they(the pixar team) are like triying to not show any gun, i mean dont you think the CDA would be armed?
the first real weapon we saw in a pixar film was in the incredibles
