Dreamgirls - Patience

Looks like

that 16th film didn’t make the requirements, so we only get three to choose from. The nominations aren’t

surprising, but I still wish we had Flushed Away to compete against.

Only one

song for Cars, with three for Dreamgirls. Maybe that could split the vote…

Anywho, Go Cars!

Wooot I knew “Our Town” would get

nominated for Original Song!!!

On a side note, no Dreamgirls for Best Picture! I had a feeling the Academy

doesn’t nominated Adapted Musicals into the Best Picture category.

Congratulations to Mr. Newman for having his

fantabulously created musical piece, Our Town, earn a nomination! Let’s hope that

it becomes an award winning in the coming month…

And let’s also keep our fingers crossed…and hope

that Happy Feet wins. :stuck_out_tongue: (snigger) Although I am routing for the afore-mentioned

film, it would be an honor to Mr. Lasseter and the entire Pixar team if Cars ended

up winning the trophy – and it must say, it has a very good chance of doing so.

Go

Cars and Happy Feet!

Would you believe I still haven’t seen Happy Feet yet?

;-o Well, it doesn’t matter. Cars is a shoe in!

I’m happy that "Our

Town" has a nomination, but I’m worried about the 3 nominations that

Dreamgirls has for the same category. Best of luck to

“Our Town”!

~~=oP

PixarVixen - Shame on you. You should go see Happy

Feet before it flies out of theaters! :stuck_out_tongue:

Heheh – I’m also rather concerned that one of

the three song nominees from Dreamgirls will kick Our

Town out of the box, but you never know. I haven’t seen the film yet, although I heard it was

excellent. Our Town is facing some extremely tough competition, by the looks (and

sounds) of it.

I think Cars will do very well when it comes to best

animated feature, but Dreamgirls is a film about singing and becoming a star, so I’m going to assume that the

music within it is very good, and therefore has a slightly better chance than Our Town of winning.

Well , if Happy Feet can beat

DreamGirls for best song , we definetly can . I mean come on , Randy Newman (music) + James Taylor (sang it ) =

another award for Cars ! And I’m guessing we will
once again beat Happy Feet and MOnster HOuse , since HF’s

plot made no sense and MH was a snore fest . NO offense to anybody who likes those movies , their just not my

taste .

I knew Cars would get

nominated for Best Animated Feature! And I’m not too suprised about Happy Feet

getting nominated either. Let’s hope Cars will get the gold! Heh!

Well, i have no doubt that Cars will win Best Animated

Feature. But as for best song, (I love Our Town) I don’t think Cars will have a chance against Dreamgirls has

three nominations. Usually, if you are nominated a lot, you have a big shot of winning, statistically speaking.

Also, the Dreamgirls was music, and the music is what made this movie so incredible. I don’t think Cars will win

that award.

This is great news! I have seen neither

Happy Feet nor Monster House, but I want

Cars to win Best Animated Feature for two reasons: 1.

It continues Pixar’s unbroken string of making masterpieces, in my opinion, 2. I

haven’t seen the other two contenders, as I mentioned.

As for Best Original Song, I want

Cars to win because I have heard the other songs and do think that "Our

Town" is the most deserving to win the award out of the five. However, I have a hunch that

Dreamgirls will win the award. But then again, as someone mentioned,

Happy Feet won the award in the Globes, so Cars

definitely still has a shot at it.

Edit: As an aside, pretty much every Oscar

prediction sites that I visited predicted that Dreamgirls will

win Best Picture; it turns out that it wasn’t even nominated for it! So here’s

what I have to say, in the manner that Han Solo said it: “Never tell me the odds!”

I agree that the

Best Animated Feature Oscar for “Cars” is a near-lock. It was more acclaimed than the other two

nominees, and it made more money.

When I heard about “Dreamgirls” and all its potential Best

Original Songs a few weeks ago, I was pessimistic about “Our Town’s” chances.

But with

“Dreamgirls” having three nominees, they’ll have a tendency to cannibalize votes from each other.

It’s hard to win outright when you’re spreading that many votes around.

Because “Our Town” is

part of a crucial scene in “Cars,” and it’s performed by a popular baby-boomer singer (James Taylor),

I think it has a good shot at the golden statuette.

Frankly, I’m happy “Our Town” doesn’t have

to compete against Prince’s “Song of the Heart,” which was in “Happy Feet.” That song’s

probably better than all of them.

In normal circumstances, I would comment that both Beauty and the

Beast and the Lion King, both of which were nominated for three songs

in the Best Original Song category, eventually won the award. However, “Beauty and the Beast” and

“Can You Feel the Love Tonight”, which were the songs that won the award, were popular even before the

Oscars (this is not the case for any of the three Dreamgirls tunes that were

nominated, I believe). To sum up, I agree that vote-cannibalization can hurt

Dreamgirls’s chance at winning the Oscar, which definitely means that

Cars has a decent chance at taking home the big prize.

I’m very happy that ‘Our Town’ got nominated in the first place! Hopefully,

they’ll continue the tradition and have all the singers sing the songs on stage… wouldn’t that be the biggest

treat of all? James Taylor singing that song live? That would be more than enough for me.

Don’t they perform all of the songs that have been nominated for best song before

picking the winner?

Yes. You know that. :stuck_out_tongue:

~~=oP

No I don’t. I have only seen the full, entire episode

(and not just the winners and nominations) once. And that was in 2005, when the Incredibles was nominated. I did

not know that PV. :stuck_out_tongue: (me sorry.)

There have been a few

exceptions, such as in 2002, when Eminem did not perform “Lose Yourself”

(which eventually won the Oscar). For the most part, however, Oscar-nominated songs are performed live.

When I first heard "Our

Town," I knew that it would automatically be nominated for the Original Song Oscar. The Academy loves Randy

Newman!!! However, I don’t believe “Our Town” is as good as “Love You I Do.” I don’t get

why people are saying that Dreamgirls is a “threat.” I listen to the Dreamgirls soundtrack way more

than I ever listened to the Cars soundtrack. “Love You I Do” is quite possibly my favorite song of last

year!

I am skeptical about saying that Cars will absolutely win the Animated Feature Category. I only saw

two animated films last year: Cars and Happy Feet, and I would have to say I was very pleased with both of them.

Major newspaper critics gave Happy Feet slightly higher reviews than they gave Cars. Granted, I am rooting for

Cars and will be greatly disappointed if Happy Feet takes home that Oscar, because Cars deserves it

100%!

Also, I am very, very pleased that Lifted got nominated for Animated Short. My friend saw a

screening at the art museum that she works at and she said that Lifted is “cute and funny.” I cannot

wait to see Lifted!

I sure hope Our Town is picked…

that bit is my favourite part of the movie.

It is odd. I had

always thought that not only “Our Town”, but “Find Yourself” would also be nominated for Best

Song. When I saw the movie, I noticed that both songs made the audience cry and made them feel touched with a

powerful song.
