Toy Story 3 made it! I’m ridiculously ecstatic right now! Like you said though, shame about Day and Night. But still!
I’m so excited for The King’s Speech (Original Screenplay) and Toy Story 3 (Animated Film)
I’m dispoitned that Helena Bonham Carter, Geoffrey Rush, and Day and Night lost.
But you can’t win them all I suppose!
Wow, I didn’t see that coming. So now HTTYD and Tangled don’t get anything, and TS3 won’t get the Big Fish this year. How predictable.
And The Social Network getting ‘Best Score’ over HTTYD and Inception? That is downright criminal.
Anyway, congrats to Unkrich and Pixar. A win is still a win.
Oh, and congrats to true-blue Aussie Shaun Tan for Best Animated Short. I’ve seen the guy’s artworks, and they’re beautiful.
I’m also rooting for Tangled to take home Best Original Song. And Toy Story 3, Inception and The King’s Speech to take home the Big Fish. Please don’t let it be that godawful ‘Facebook the Movie’.
And I haven’t seen TKS, but I like the trailer, so I’m sorta gunning for it anyway.
We Belong Together got it! I’m so happy!
I’m disappointed that Day & Night didn’t win, but ecstatic about TS3’s 2 wins. I had fun watching the awards with my brother tonight, even though all we really did was rant. LOL.
Congrats to Pixar!
I’m glad you had a great time Grace!
Award I was most happy about: The King’s Speech getting Best Picture
Award I was saddest about: Best Animated Short(I thought Day & Night should of took it)
The King’s Speech should not have won best picture. It’s a really good movie, but it doesn’t stand a chance next to TS3 or TSN in my opinion. Was also a little disappointed that Hailee Steinfeld didn’t get Best Supporting Actress, Exit Through the Gift Shop didn’t get Best Documentary (who didn’t want to see Banksy?!), and the fact that Alice and Wonderland won two awards.
I disagree personally myself Bryko, I definitly thought The King’s Speech deserved its win. For me TS3 is overall a good movie but it doesn’t deserve best picture either here or in the oscars. Nomination? Yes- I can see that despite liking HTTYD more (you know opinions and all that). But as a Win? No not really. Too many good movies as their competition overall to consider that reality even without any possible ‘prejudice’ for animated features. I’d be utterly shocked if TS3 had won best picture in the oscars for a variety of reasons.
I haven’t seen social network to really judge really- though I keep hearing bad things so I’m a bit… unenthusiastic in even trying to rent it when I can though I probably should.
I mean after all, opinions.
The King’s Speech was a great film. Yes, TS3, Black Swan and The Kids Are Alright are great too, but I don’t think it was the year to break the glass cieling just yet. I’m rooting for Brave to be fantastic and see that get Best Picture 2013
I think it’s great that British films have done so well in the last few years imo. Biased, I know, but it’s nice not to see such an American domination
I am also dissapointed that Day and Night didn´t get the award I didn´t like The Lost thing, it seemed boring for me [spoil](couldn´t have the main character and the thing have a nice goodbye?? The thing just leaves and that´s it…[/spoil]Day and Night has more emotion.
And i liked “i see the light” better than “We Belong Together”. At least Toy Story 3 won the award for best animated movie
Sorry to be a wet blanket, but I’m immensely disappointed with the Awards this year. Pixar has been denied Best Picture once again, HTTYD and LOTG were practically snubbed, and TSN won Best Original Score? Over freakin’ John Powell? Oh, and Tangled didn’t get Best Original Song.
Presentation-wise, I love the projections of the movies, the set looks really beautiful. But why was James Franco lookin’ so smug while Anne struggles to keep the enthusiasm up? I swear, the Oscars keep getting worse every year.
If I ran the show:
TS3 - Best Pic
HTTYD - Best Animated and Score
LOTG - Best Visual FX
Tangled - Best Song
Inception - Same Awards
The only good points were Kirk Douglas, HTTYD’s scene in the Best Animated montage, David Seidler’s acceptance speech, the autotune music video, and Helena’s eyeroll in response to Hopper’s “Triangle of Man-Love” line. And the “Where’s the dad?” line for Toy Story 3.
Otherwise, it’s largely a lot of waffling, and self-congratulatory pats. I want my 3 hrs back.
Most Well-Deserved Award: Any that Inception won, really.
Least Well-Deserved Award: The Social Network for Best Original Score.
Having ranted though, I would like to congratulate Unkrich and Pixar for their double-wins this year. Here’s hoping Brave will break the glass ceiling next year!
P.S. You can read my running commentary of the occasion on my most recent Tumblr post here: thedriveintheatre.tumblr.com/
Oh I don’t deny that I wish HTTYD had won best animated but it was horrendously unlikely to happen. I was rather shocked to find HTTYD hadn’t won best score overall though.
I mean I was so sure they’d get it, they were certainly robbed if the opinions of the score of social network is any indication- plus a part of me without seeing it almost sniggers at the thought about a movie about a network site could possibly have a great memorable score which would actually fit the mood at the same time. I mean it’s not really like a boy and his dragon, a toy dealing with his kid growing up or even a film and insight into the royal family as a man has to deal with something holding him back from his duty (which I must add really are historically a firm rather than a family, I think it’s interesting to see the effects or expectations that can have on someone and while with little action means many emotional and thus score possibilities).
HTTYD’s score makes your heart race. But I do think The King’s Speech was an excellent choice for best picture and is well deserved. I honestly don’t know what to feel about the rest though- just that TS3 was utterly predictable for best animated.
But in any case it wouldn’t have made much sense to me if TS3, which had been nominated for best picture, wouldn’t get best animated picture award to boot. I mean how would that work? I know animation is judged on various aspects overall but in any case there are certainly different things animated can get away with as opposed to live action and that can sometimes affect the story. Doesn’t prevent the ability of telling a fantsatic story and can add to it though.
I would like to see an animated film win an oscar for best picture certainly.
Just not TS3 and not this year. I don’t care that it’s Pixar as the company. The awards should simply not be doled out on the basis of past company preformance when judging on individual pictures. Each movie is in a way a new slate and should be judged according (in a perfect and fair world that is).
If someday Dreamworks or Blue Sky produced the absolute perfect movie and got it, it wouldn’t matter say they had less hits or more bad movies than pixar before hand. It would still mean for that individual film, they’d deserve to win that particular award, just as an example.
So individual pictures, not past company preformance in these particular prizes.
(Once again in a perfect world).
Them getting or deserving an award should not be about past preformance of the company or whether they’ve been snubbed or whatever before. It is simply the movie itself which should be the determining factor here. Just because Pixar didn’t get it last time doesn’t mean they should automatically get it now. I’m not denying there’s some unfairness in the oscars, but this year… they truely did not seem to deserve best picture to me. Not to say the movie was bad at all, of course not- just that some of their competition was better. In fact a lot of movies were pretty good. It’s kind of like with animated to me the past tweleve months, and to use the analogy of the new my little pony: friendship is magic show:
Tangled was my least favourite animated film really in the 2010/early 2011 slot out of the ones I’d seen just like Rainbow Dash is probably my least favourite pony of the main six on the new MLP show. But that doesn’t mean I don’t like them- simply that somehow ther others were better or more enjoyable to me for whatever reason. Which is fantastic news because it means more good movies overall when you think about it or that the other ponies are just that great.
It’s not their year which is actually fine. They got nominated all the same anyway. Cars 2 however unfortuantly I am 99% sure doesn’t have a chance at all next year I think of getting even a best picture nomination- so I guess people had hopes Pixar would snap it up- because Cars 2 is -so- not going to get even a nomination for the big cheese award (though who knows? I want to eat my words and see something fantastic despite some of my doubts) Even though it could be fun, I don’t see if as best picture caliber for some reason though of course we’ve yet to see it and judge for ourselves- plus let’s face it a lot of movies have had less than fantatsic trailers anyway.
Dreamworks too does not have much of a chance- most probably next year with the line up they have. I like Kung Fu Panda but its sequel is something which isn’t going to be best picture fare either as fun as it may be. I don’t think 2011 is going to be as good a year as 2010 animated movie releases were for those which recieve acclaim across the board. I don’t think there will be anything ‘terrible’ and maybe even pretty fun but it won’t be what people have been yelping over in 2010 at all I think.
They already had their names on the best animated award when their other nomination came to light. Pretty obvious there.
The thing is though regardless of however the people in the awards ceremonies feel about animation, TS3 didn’t deserve best picture in any case.
In my opinion TS3 was a good movie from 2010.
But certainly not the best anyway regardless of whatever medium if may be in. Sure TS3 might be Pixar’s highest grossing most successful film to date financially to Pixar but honestly it wasn’t their best in terms of pure quality either all the same to me anyway (though once again past prefromance should be a moot point in the awards game).
Still, a part of me thinks that while TS3 shouldn’t have won best picture some of those nomination places for best picture should have been filled with even more animation features- imagine if you will if HTTYD had also been nominated for best picture as well.
Would have certainly made things in the awards much more interesting when you think about it.
In any case 2011 looks like a bust for the idea of best animated getting a best picture somehow to me too. Unless of course other films in 2011 also fail to produce ‘wow’ factors with people.
The Oscars could be better and more fair certainly but if say Cars 2 won best picture next year I’d be pretty darn supicious something weird wasn’t going down and they weren’t going ‘Ooooh look at us, look at us! We’re not really prejudiced against animaton!’ or something weird (if they even cared about that at all, which I pretty much doubt).
But anyway if the Oscars are really that bad in the end we should eventually take it that, in the end, it’s just an empty cup or… uh figurine. Yeah. That.
(Wait are oscars hollow anyway? I’ll shut up now.)
There were many downer moments (thedriveintheatre: I agree. Franco wasn’t a good host, and there were a couple films I felt had better scores than TSN). But let’s not forget the good moments.
I loved the set! (as tdit pointed out). I also liked the Bob Hope hologram. And, hello? Tom Hanks payed homage to Gone With the Wind! I like how the Academy honored their roots this year a few times
Melissa Leo’s f-bomb was amazing
Hathaway’s parody of ‘On My Own’ from Les Miserables
Natalie Portman and Colin Firth recieving their Oscars (I can’t say I liked their speeches though)
Seeing Lee Unkrich on stage
Kirk Douglas. What a champ!
i enjoyed watching it last night. i was pretty satisfied with the show. i was ahppy for all who were nominated and for all who won.
I am so happy and pleased with the results, I mean I was expecting only 1 oscar for Toy Story 3 and it got 2, and also Inception won 4,
I can not say I enjoyed the Oscars last night. I can’t say that. So, I will highlight the parts I liked. I’ll ditch what I disliked, because I don’t want to get killed.
-Another best animated award for Pixar! They own this award by now.
-Kirk Douglas: I was very pleased to see him on the AA stage again.
-The Tangled clips played
-all HtTYD noms and clips
-Anne Hathaway!!! Double points right there.
-the montage of lost Hollywood greats, starting with John Barry, and containing Leslie Nielsen!
-TSN losing the best pic to The King’s Speech. God just reminded me he exists. Thanks you, mystical being of awesomeness.
Those were the parts I liked. I will say that I am now satisfied with TS3 scoring best animated, because it was the best. I am glad that Dragons was nominated. Tangled really should have gotten best song, though. The first real Disney classic in over a decade, and what happens?! Nothing. Awesome. Yeah, I won’t mention my other gripes. It ends there.
There are songs that take a while to grow on me, but the Tangled one isn’t that spectacular to me (and I’m an Alan Menken lover). If anything, the song from 127 Hours was the stronger competitor, but everyone knew We Belong Together was going to get it.
I felt that they deserved something. I didn’t adore “I See The Light” either. It wasn’t very iconic like most Disney songs, it wasn’t very emotional(for me), and it was very short. But I wanted them to get something. Same for HtTYD. Toy Story 3 got best animated; why couldn’t the others get something?
That can sound fairer at first, but think about it again
Okay, okay. It does sound pretty idiotic. And pretty political(on the side I’m not even on.) I just felt bad forr both movies. They both were so well made, and got nothing for it.
