Academy Awards 2011

Yes, that’s a sad thing, but that shouldn’t stop them. Just keep the good work and they’ll win someday.

I’m a fan of the Big Guy in the sky too, but unfortunetly, he’s not one of the 6,000 Academy members.

Other things I forgot to add to my list of favorite parts:

*Anne Hathaway hinting that Andy’s mom might be a lesbian
*Anne Hathaway as ‘The Brown Duck’
*Franco’s Nerd comment. It wasn’t funny the way he intended, just that he thought it would be.

I liked Anne Hathaway as a host. My favorite part was when she san the “On my Own” parody song.

I know. I just feel the irrational need to thank him for silly things like Oscar winners, presidential wins, etc. 8D I feel that somehow he’s indirectly responsible.

But, my overall least favorite part was that Tangled and HtTYD got nothing(aside from cruddy nominations) or how boring James Franco was.

I understand that you’re upset than Tangled and HTTYD didn’t win. But there is nothing cruddy about a nomination. in fact, it should be a great honor to be nominated. Don’t be upset that they didn’t win. They were slected to be nominated out of every movie that was released this past year. Now that is incredible.

Believe it or not I didn’t really care much this year. After the initial griping over the double nomination debacle I became rather apathetic to the entire ceremony. I still watched though. It was nice to see the other side of Randy Newman.

I have many things to say about the Oscars but considering what happened last time I said anything I’ll just leave it with, I don’t like when one movie sweeps, the ceremony was awful, Franco barely seemed there, I would’ve won pretty much any Oscar pool I played, and congrats to all the winners.

2012 is going to be last Oscars ever. They better make them good!

I think Franco was on something. I honestly wouldn’t be suprised if he was.

That’s actually the consensus. Or at least something of a joke. I mean come on, the man has multiple movie projects he’s either filming or about to film, multiple television appearances, is taking post-grad courses at a major university and was asked to host the Oscars. He’s also known for recreational drug use. I wouldn’t put it past him to use something to take the edge off. And frankly with everything on his plate I wouldn’t blame him.

James Franco is one of the busiest men in the business. He was also tweeting during the ceremony. I’m more worried about what was up with Hathaway than I’m worried about what was up with him.

My mom, sister and dad like to talk about the fashion at the award show. So let me ask you guys. Who was the best dressed?

TSS: Anne! She went through the most costume changes! Though anytime Cate Blanchett, Gwyneth Paltrow, Sandra Bullock or Halle Berry came on, I was mesmerised! Can’t remember the blokes, but I thought Spielberg and Hawaiian-Man Lasseter were rather sharp.

mentalguru: I read your entire post (I always enjoy reading what you have to say) and I totally agree with you; they shouldn’t give a dud Pixar film the Award in the future, just because of past performance or as a ‘pity win’. Each film should be rigorously judged on its own merits, and not on its predecessors.

The TSN win for Score was a travesty. Outright blasphemy. For the record, I’ve listened and watched both films in context, so I’m entitled to this opinion. I don’t know about The King’s Speech, I really should watch it to get a better judgement. But from the preview clips I’ve listened, TSN obviously is the most unremarkable of the trio.

I really think they should abolish Best Animated so that there wouldn’t be this confusion of TS3 winning B.A. but not B.P. But then, animated films wouldn’t stand a chance of recognition. It is in the very act of helping these films gain recognition, that the Academy successfully ‘ghettosized’ them. Just like ‘Best Documentary’ and ‘Best Foreign Language Film’. If they are the so-called international purveyors of the best in films on Earth, why have a separate category for all the non-English speakers, or the non-fictional creators? Why not just call themselves “The Best Awards Show in the English-speaking World who is only interested in live-action, fictional films”. But then when you read the name “Oscars”, it is implicit.

Perhaps someone should do like what China did for the Nobel Prize and pull a ‘Confucious’. I’ll set up my own Academy called ‘The Elmos’ and we’ll pick films regardless of nationality, language, of medium, with liberty and justice for all. That’ll show 'em!

End Soap Box

I really think Franco was stiff yesterday. I mean, he was backstage when he was announced as nominee (he could be busy, though), and when Anne hugged him at one point, he just stood like a dead tree! I would, like, hug back, man! It’s Anne Hathaway! :stuck_out_tongue:

Being busy is no excuse for not showing enthusiasm or energy for the biggest night in Hollywood. And why on Earth should he be Tweeting during the show? It’s like SMS-ing in class, which most of my colleagues do anyway, but I think is incredibly rude. If this was his idea of deadpanning or ‘looking cool’, he came off more as an aloof cat to me.

At least Anne looked more alive. She didn’t come off particularly nutty or anything to me, she was just doing her job of keeping the audience awake for this mother of back-patting events. Maybe James is still method-acting from Pineapple Express.

My highlights of the show:

  • The opening Inception spoof. Too bad TS3 didn’t get included.
  • “Where’s the dad?”
  • Kirk Douglas
  • The scene they chose for HTTYD in the Best Animated montage
  • Seeing Hawaiian Shirt Man in a sharp suit
  • Helen Mirren parle tres bien francais, and Russell Brand est un mauvais traducteur.
  • Surprise cameo of the POTUS.
  • Anne singing to Hugh Jackman about Australians.
  • “Winter’s Bone, Rabbit Hole… How to Train Your Dragon. It’s disgusting!”
  • The Pogo-style Autotune music video.
  • The ‘In Memoriam’ segment to Celine’s ‘Smile’.

I usually despise the fashion talk, cause that’s not what the Oscars are about.

But if I had to chose one… (Besides Annie, who cheated as she had so many dressed), I would probably say Natalie Portman. I’m more in love with her every day. She so sweet and she was glowing.

And I know Jennifer Lawrence’s dress was very simple, but she looked very attractive. And I once doubted about her beauty.

I thought the Gregory Brothers (Auto-Tune The News) montage was ridiculously out of place. While funny, it was SNL funny and not Oscar funny. It clashed with the rest of the telecast which was much more restrained if not particularly all that entertaining.

I don’t think either host really had it. Anne seemed like she was trying to hard but was ultimately uncomfortable and overwhelmed, you already know what I think was going on with James, they just gave nothing for the audience to work with.

As for the tweeting, it’s part of the joke. Over here in America it’s getting around that James Franco does everything. I mean really just about everything. He’s the guy who took over 50 credit hours in a single semester and still came out with a 3.5, something that truly is humanly impossible. He’s made something of a comedic reputation of being the ultimate multi-tasker. So tweeting from the Oscar gives the impression that he was staying true to his rep. One could almost imagine him frantically trying to finish a mid-term backstage while simultaneously rehearsing for his upcoming appearance in General Hospital. Unfortunately, it damaged that mystique a little because both his tweets and his hosting were off. I don’t blame him for trying though. It would’ve been pretty hilarious if he had pulled it off.

Most of the jokes over the night were just painfully unfunny. At the very least no one could deliver them properly. I am glad that we didn’t have to sit through those awkward toon meets human presentation or alternate reality animated characters at the Oscar type deals that we’ve gotten for the past decade. Though they are kind of cool to watch they’ve always seemed like they were pandering and not on the same level as the rest of the telecasts. They were often out of character and never rose above shout-outs and callbacks.

The music was really weak this year. The best music in a telecast in recent memory still goes to Michael Giacchino for the 09 telecast where he re-orchestrated famous film themes as if they were composed for different genres. That may sound like blatant fanboyism, but I don’t care.

My favorite parts include:
Kirk Douglas
Gregory Brothers montage
Jude Law & RDJ
Randy Newman giving backhanded compliments (totally Randy Newman)
The film projection setup
Luke Matheny (God of Love)
The use of Pepper’s Ghost and awesome editing (as unnecessary as both were) with Bob Hope.
The twitter feeds of several comedians (not in the show)
Winning the Oscar pool (if I had played)

The Academy needs to pull together though. They seem to have no idea what to do with themselves when it comes to broadcast. I still think they should ask Jon Stewart to come back. Letting the TDS/CR crew taking another swing at it would be hilarious or at least a very interesting failure.

Here are my thoughts on The Social Network winning best score as posted in the Dragon thread earlier

That opinion still stands.

Thanks TDIT! Surprised you read the whole thing- staple from me, far too long and typo ridden because of my slight dyslexia. -shakes fist-

In terms of wins it’s definitly Best Score I would want to change the most. In retrospect while I wanted HTTYD there are good arguments for Inception or The King’s Speech getting it. Because they were pretty great too despite my own prefrences. I mean I could see someone who still has tastes but merely a different opinion thinking their scores should win too.

I think most of all I really would change how nominations occur. More Animation places. The way it currently works it is more or less saying: “LOL spurn out a few more bad movies on top of your good ones at least sucka because the good ones won’t be recognised in order to gain a place if you all collectively do too few anyway! Quantity>Quality durr. Mediocre movies win more places! You NOOBS.”

(… I have no idea why I am comparing the Oscars commitee to internet trolls but anyhow… ).

In fact I can’t say I saw a single animated movie which could be stated as being ‘awful’ really (Then again I didn’t see all of them, though more than I usually do). Which is saying something.

Next year I’m already making some predictions. I think it’s more or less destined that Cars 2 (Pixar, it’s like they have a seat reserved), Pandas 2 (Dreamworks, yeah them too actually as Pixar’s main rival in any case, plus original Pandas is in possibly top 5 at very least for DW’s for critics and my personal top 3) and Rio from the looks of it will be nominated best animated next year.

But I think Rio might win Best Animated out of the three actually. Of course that’s maybe too early to call.

I’m kind of wondering what will happen in 2012 though when Pixar has two movies.

But… from the sounds of it?

I actually think Brave (-cough-Bear and the Bow) MIGHT actually have a shot at the actual Big prize- the Best Picture thing, as in, depending perhaps on competition and if certain things get better in the awards it could actually have a good chance and it might not be too shocking if it actually won. It’s just a weird feeling I can’t shake off. It sounds different to what Pixar does usually and could really pay off depending.

Maybe. Of course that depends on the actual product (which we’ve yet to even -see-) and the competition, and well the committee too etc. but for some reason I’m feeling best picture nomination for it for whatever reason at the very least.

I’m not sure why. I could be wrong. (Stay away from making a villian like the Queen in snow white Pixar, though I’m 95% sure you won’t do that to us anyway…)

In this event Pixar- do not make me eat my words okay? I do actually want to be right in this instance even if I’m hoping for doubts to be wrong elsewhere.

I also agree with most of you, I love Hathaway, can´t wait to see her in the catwoman dress

And, just for the looks, Rango can too. Let’s wait for the reviews.

You guys are psychic! I love you!

I agree about the jokes, poor Anne’s “But enough about me” line was greeted by crickets. I don’t really mind the ‘Roger Rabbit’ style of presentations- I was waiting for one during the opening Inception spoof, but we got a yard that looked like Bonnie’s where Alec explains the plot.

A lot of people were miffed that Shrek was chosen as the background. It is not a jab at Pixar; the Academy thought it would be nice to honour Dreamworks as the winner of the first Animated Ghetto Award, so they thought it would be nice to have Far Far Away as a backdrop. Unkrich receiving the award in front of it is merely coincidental, for all we know, HTTYD could’ve won it and made the setting that much more poignant. I don’t like the way how they said “We need to make this background more animated” and nothing happens in the background. I was expecting Shrek or Puss and Donkey to stroll down the avenue at some point, but nope, it’s just a boring still.

mentalguru: Oh yeah, how could I forget Inception? It’s really strong, dark, and pretty repetitive music (like James Horner’s ‘War’ track from Avatar), but I preferred HTTYD’s emotional range, cues breadth, and general ‘feel-good’ vibe.

The quota thing is one of the dumbest acts of the Academy next to the Animated Ghetto, but it was done with good intentions. More films deserves more nominees. It’s just that in a really concentrated year of a few good films, having a quota-ceiling is a hindrance to being truly inclusive. Which is far from what I can say about the Academy and their elitist stance against populist movies. Somebody’s got to be the purveyor of ‘good taste’.

As much as I love their first movies, I’m not terribly excited for the two titanic sequels this year. What I mean is, yes, I’m anticipating it, I’ll watch as many trailers and featurettes as I dare to, but I’m not over-the-moon as delirious as I am for more original fare like Rango and Rio. You also have to remember Happy Feet 2 is on the way this Christmas, and its predecessor actually won the Award over Cars in '06. So it’ll be another busy year, though unfortunately most of it will be spent in mediocrity (unless I’m proven wrong).

I really think Pixar has something special going with Brave. Shame about Newt, but Pixar and Blue Sky left on good terms and I’ve sort of seen the ‘torch’ passed to Blue Sky to tell the story of two lost souls who will discover each other in a foreign land and all that. But with Brave, this is something unique. Pixar has always set its stories in contemporary Americana locales, even for their fantasy worlds. Monsters Inc is definitely not a Chinese city, for example. It looks more like Brookyln. Up and Cars 2 are their only ventures into exotic lands, but Dreamworks, Blue Sky and Animal Logic have been doing that for years (Madagascar, KFP, HTTYD, Horton, Ice Age, Happy Feet, LOTG). They have never attempted anything outside the 20th or 21st century in terms of technology or culture. So I’m very stoked to see them tell a Scottish tale of conflict, family, love, and betrayal. Pixar has always told universal themes, but this just takes epic to a whole new level.

I completely agree. I despise the Best Animated feature award with every fiber of my being. Oh, so it was good compared to the other animations, just not the "[i:36r6s723]adult[/i:36r6s723]" films. I see how it is. :-\

I really doubt it,

so far, I see:

Rango
TinTin
Cars 2

getting a nomination

I am not saying it would happen, but
