Well, hopefully Brave will be marvellous and Pixar will pick up their streak again! Losing is no big deal, Pixar have won 6 times now, right? It’d get boring if they won every year. I’m sure John and all the guys who worked there are disappointed, but criticsm can be a blessing in disguise.
I agree with you.
As Thomas Wayne would ask, “Why do we fall?”
“So that we might better learn to pick ourselves up.”
And despite all of Pixar’s success, they’ll never stop learning what makes a great film and what doesn’t.
I second that definedancing. I’m sure Lasseter was sure that the film would lose due to its critical reception. Then again, it would be boring and stale if Pixar kept winning year in and year out.
That’s a wonderful quote!
I also don’t want Pixar to win all the time. It would just get very bland.
In my opinion, whoever has the best film that year should win.
That’s my thought, although i’m not sure what the Best film is this year. My favourite was Tintin but technicially I guess it was Rango or Chico and Rita.
I have no clue who’s going to win Best Picture as there is no clear winner; The Artist, The Descendants, War Horse, The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo, 50/50, Hugo and The Help all have a fighting chance I think.
I think The Artist has more chances than the rest.
While I thought The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo was going to sweep the awards when it wasn’t released, now that it is, I’m pretty sure it has zero chance of winning.
50/50 can have it’s deserved nomination, but I don’t think it could win.
I’m 90% positive that The Artist or The Descendants will win Best Picture, and most likely the former. Other top contenders will probably be Hugo (I’d cry if that movie won BP or Best Director!), The Help, War Horse, and Midnight in Paris. The remaining will be some mainstream comedies (Bridesmaids or perhaps even 50/50) or other art house movies that had mixed reviews (The Tree of Life, Girl with the Dragon Tattoo).
Hmm, I see people writing about what a weak year 2011 was, but i’ve actually seen more good films than bad last year, and the majority of the award baity films that i’ve seen are very good imo. Every year has it’s stinkers, like i’m trying to forget that The Smurfs was ever made, but I think 2011 has on the whole been pretty strong.
In terms of the weak batch of animated films, I think back to the start of 2011 and I recall that the only animated films i had any interest in were Cars 2 and The Adventures of Tintin, so it’s not like my expectations were high, because it all looked weak from the start. This year, there are at least 5 or 6 animated films i’m at least vaguely excited to see. Maybe expectations do play a part. Also, and I think crucially, the Ice Age and Madagascar sequels are the only major sequels this year, so i’m so excited to see some long awaited originality.
I think SoA is right, and The Artist has pretty much got the Oscar in the bag.
2011 wasn’t a good year for animation. Nothing made 200M domestically and the quality of the films were mostly average or awful.
I don’t really judge films by the money they make, but by the quality of the storiy and characters, and to me this year’s animated films weren’t really spectacular (aside from 1 or 2).
Not to mention their was so many animated films this year.
Yeah, how much they earn doesn’t mean much to me.
Well if it earns enough money, their could be a sequel. The film makers will make a sequel as long as it made a decent about of money, they don’t care to much about the reviews all the time.
Oh wow, I forgot about that. Well, there’s no doubt he’s disapointed. But 5 years in a row of getting the GG is great, espeically since up til now Pixar has won them all. Pixar should be proud, but it’s inevitable that there’d be a time where they’d loose.
I think Pixar might be adapting what other studios are doing. Making sequels to support bigger projects.
That’s true. But they were bound to lost at one point. Nothing last forever.
Can’t wait for the nominees announce tomorrow!
