Me neither. I’m skeptical to find out what gets nominated for Best Picture and Best Animated Film.
Hope Rango get’s nominated. Car’s 2 don’t care really but I think it may get nominated.
I am so stoaked too! I hope Rio and Rango are nominated for best animated feature!
I don’t think Rio gets nominated, but I think Rango will get the nod.
I’ll be super disapointed if Rio doesn’t get a nod.
Not me. Rio was still good, but not as great to other animated films last year.
Rio was by no means the beast, but I think it was better than some.
Totally agree. Rio was better then some releases last year, but I wouldn’t put it in the high elite as I like to call it.
Rio is my favorite after Rango.
I’m an ILM fan, a western fan and even a Gore Verbinski fan.
Rango was a very well made film and yet, for some reason, something didn’t click with me. It’s sad, but it can happen sometimes, even with the best of films.
Which is why Tintin was my vehicle this year. Hoping hard it gets in.
I feel the exact same way.
Chances are higher Tintin will because it won a Golden Globe
I won’t argue with that, because it didn’t necessarily “click” with me either. I don’t want to call Rango a case of style over substance, because the story’s a solid one and I enjoy all the homages to western cinema, but what interests me about the film—what is a “breath of fresh air”—are the semi-gritty, occasionally strange visuals. They give Rango a certain flavor that I haven’t seen in other animated films, and I like that.
Oooh, and I heard that the nominees will be announced tomorrow morning! Yay!
Rango didn’t really “click” with me either.
I’m not sure. A lot of animators are opposed to mocap.
I disagree with you all for Rango. It was just a creative film and was a good altetnative to Pixar. I think the reason why it didn’t really “click” with people was because it was a western.
I said in my post I’m a huge western fan, so that’s not it.
And I also acknowledge that Rango is a creative film, and a very good one at that. But there are times that an awesome film simply doesn’t get you.
To simplify things, I liked Rango a lot, but I didn’t loved, as I expected to.
I see. I know Paramount is proud with its success and they might start their own animation studio. Could be wrong on that though.
The nominations for Best Animated Feature were a bit of a surprise: A Cat in Paris, Chico & Rita, Kung Fu Panda 2, Puss in Boots, and Rango.
I’m also glad to see that Hugo was nominated for Best Director (yeeeeah, Scorsese!) and Best Adapted Screenplay. Wonder what else it will get.
The only other real surprise from the nominees announced this morning was a Best Actor whom I’ve never heard of. But hey, if he’s that good, maybe the film’s worth seeing.
So what’s the score on the nominees? I’m too lazy to Google, and frankly after the past few years of disappointment, I’m not in the mood. Can’t give a Remy’s butt about live-action, since there’s so many obvious ‘Oscar baits’ being released now (War Horse being the only exception, I’ll write a review about it later, but it’s good).
From qop’s post, I presume Rio and Cars 2 didn’t get nominated? I had a gut feel that Rio wouldn’t be nominated because it would be deemed too ‘childish’ by the Academy, and while it didn’t really push any boundaries (beyond the exotic setting for an animated film), it’s my favourite film of last year in my heart because I had good memories of it with my RL and Internet friends.
Cars 2, on the other hand, is not really a surprise. I mean, I liked it (“Sorta… not really…” as Rafael would say it), but seeing how a lot of critics panned it during its release, I didn’t think it stood a chance. Would be a breath of fresh air for a change - don’t get me wrong, I love Pixar still, but it’s interesting to see it not being nominated this year.
Happy Feet 2 was extremely disappointing for me. I loved Brad Pitt and Matt Damon’s characters, but that’s about it. Same setting, same plot as Flight of the Phoenix, and the potty jokes did it in for me. Shame, as I am a fan of the predecessor and Animal Logic.
Really glad Rango got a nom. I watched TinTin recently and had the same reaction Spirit of Adventure had with Rango, I enjoyed the film (the elaborate single-shot chase scene is worth the price of admission alone), but it didn’t really ‘click’ with me. Rango did for some reason, so I’m rooting it will win ‘Best Animated GHETTO’ all the way, baby.
EDIT Here’s the list of nominees. Glad to see ‘Real in Rio’ for Best Original Song and Tin TIn for Original Score. Hugo seems to be the new ‘Slumdog Millionaire’ for Categories Domination, good to see Bridesmaids, Real Steel, Rise of the Planet of the Apes and Drive get mentions. Surprisingly, Pixar doesn’t have a single nomination. I wonder if the hosts will take the pss out of it when announcing Best Animated Ghetto.
