Antz

…Or he could be the spawn of Satan…just putting my delusional idealogy out there.

And yet despite all of this, Antz is a great film. In my opinion, anyway. It’s a shame about the circumstances surrounding it, as I really do believe it’s one of those under-appreciated early animation films that has a sparkling humour and some memorable characters. I’d love to watch it again sometime.

Liked it well enough, not as much as A Bug’s Life but more than The Ant Bully. Enjoyed the character designs that approximated the stars’ looks, especially Sly Stallone (actually, it’s one a favorite among Sly performances ever). A highlight of the film is the varied music; the track called “The Colony” is extremely infectious in a bizarre and energetic way that perfectly evokes ant activity:

Go ahead, try to not move your body to that, I triple-dog dare you.

Antz rates toward the high end of DreamWorks CG features I’ve seen and is far superior to the similar Bee Movie…although it shares a problem in that it’s tough to separate the lead character from the real-world comedic persona of the voice actor. Then again, Z is one of Woody Allen’s better roles in any of his movies.

Well, Antz…I don’t dislike this film at all. I like it, I just don’t like it as much as A Bug’s Life.

The funny thing is-and I’m sure some may well disagree with me-is that I expected, being a fan of both films as a child, to prefer Antz over A Bug’s Life because it’s more mature and adult orientated, but Antz, in comparison to ABL, just seemed, I dunno…dated. ABL still looks pretty new-ish and appealing, but Antz doesn’t really feel very relevant, even with the underlying conspiracy and war story, and this is exactly where DreamWorks SKG fail imo…they use gags relevant to the now and not the future.

I’ve not seen [i]How To Train Your Dragon /i but I’ve heard that it’s very good and doesn’t fall into the pop culture trap; however Antz, Shrek, Over The Hedge, Shark Tale…not bad films really, but are all the jokes still applicable? Not really.

Other things I disliked about Antz…not much, only that the ants look rather ugly. Antz is funny, quirky, clever, and I really enjoyed it as a kid and I liked it when I saw it recently. Woody Allen does a good job, the talking head after the war I always found awesome and somewhat amusing (I was a strange, strange child), the concept is clever, the soundtrack is very memorable, and it is, overall, a good film.

It’s ok. It does look more real then A Bug’s Life did. I always wanted the Nostalgia Crotoc to do a crossover review on them.

I’d like to see that too.

I saw part of this movie in a doctor’s office. The jokes weren’t very funny, and I was personally quite annoyed with the lead character.

Same here! Only I didn’t see it in a docter’s office…

Honestly, I find Flik quite appealing and relatable. However, Z was very annoying.

You took the words right out of my mouth!

high-five

I agree 100%!! I don’t know why, but it always feels dated to me. ABL has some more relevant messages which could last through generations, but is I guess what defines a great movie. I haven’t seen ABL in forever (it’s actually the one Pixar film I’ve only seen, like, twice), but I love Flik much much more than Z. Z bothered me. His voice bothered me. And his character in general just… bothered me.

On a side note, I loved how colorful ABL was, but Antz seemed so dark and dank and ugly. Especially underground. I didn’t think it was very pretty

critics seem to like Antz better. A Bug’s Life has a 91% fresh on Rotten Tomatoes and Antz has a 95% Fresh. I still like A Bug’s Life better, but by a theard.

Yes, but if you look at the percent of the audience that like it it’s 47% Antz, to 61% ABL. That’s the real notifer. Critics don’t matter. Especially one’s whose name rhymes with Almond Fight.

Evangeline- I think the bright colour schemes is one thing that has kept it from being dated. ABL looks more quirky and unique than the other Pixar films in terms of art imo, because of it’s use of unnatural colours and layered anatomy.
And Flik is so, so, so much more relatable than Z! I agree, Z was just annoying at times, he was a good character but he was very “oh woe me!” which often got very annoying. Flik I could actually relate to because I was always one of those gawky kids who never fitted in and his positive energy has probably shined through a whole generation of social outcasts. That sounds a bit depressing though, all I’m trying to say is that I agree! 8D

Pixarfan91- There are films who have won Best Picture Oscars who have had less than 91% on RT.

RT doesn’t mean much. I mean, I like most movie critics. They’re very educated individuals. But if you base your opinion or the quality of a film on Rotten Tomatoes, there’s a severe problem right there.

The characters in Antz are very ugly, I agree. And the sets are too.

If I watch this nowadays I can say that the animation here is really poor, I used to enjoy half of the film when I was a kid, but it always seemed too similar to ABL, (which I watched first), years after I realized that it was done by DW only to compite against Pixar, too bad

C+

Yeah, it’s really pathetic that that was the only reason that movie was made.

To be fair, they did a good job considering that they didn’t have a long time to make it. Not that I condone the cheating, and it was all a bit pathetic, but think of what they could’ve done if they actually bothered with their own story and spent more time? DW could have started off a hell of a lot better. It’s a shame, because DW obviously have some talented folk, but it’s taken Jeffery Katzenberg about 10 years to realise that releasing films similar to Disney or Pixar is just going to make him and his company look stupid.

I really didn’t like this movie, even as a kid… In my opinion, there’s only 1 good Dreamworks movie they released before Kung Fu Panda, and that’s ‘The Prince of Egypt’.
