Ratatouille will surely have a lot of competition when
it’s released in theatres. While I don’t think there are any other big movies coming out during the same
weekend (June 29)… the following films are being released around its time:
-Pirates of the Caribbean 3
(May 25)
-Ocean’s Thirteen (June
-Transformers (July 4)
-Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix
(July 13)
-The Simpsons Movie (July 27)
I got this information off of IMDB.com. There might be other
movies that will grow hype, but I don’t know enough about it yet. What do you think?
Don’t forget Spiderman
3!!
Ratatouille will do just fine. PIXAR’s beat tons of competition before!
This something that has me concerned too. I mean you have THe Simpsons movie (And we all
know how absolutely huge the simpsons is. The worlds longest running sitcom) and Harry Potter 5 all targeting the
same audience pretty much. Disney better have something good going here with the marketing.

Luckily, it’s already obvious that Pirates of the Caribbean 3
will made a LOT of money… it could possibly make more than The Simpsons and Harry Potter 5 when looking at how
well the first sequel did.
But that aside, Ratatouille (if advertised well) could possibly have a stronger
box office than previous Pixar films. Cars has already done better than Superman, The Da Vinci Code, and it’s SO
closed to beating X-3… give it another week or two on that. Therefore, it’ll make it the 2nd best movie of the
summer, behind Pirates 2. Two top spots for Disney! Yeh, the summer’s not over yet, hehe…
That’s what happened in 2003, with Finding Nemo on top and POTC at number 2 . . .
What
about Shrek the Third? Isn’t that film coming out at around the same time.
Personally, I think the Shrek
films are okay. They’re not as overwhelming as any of Pixar’s efforts, but they’re entertaining (two
DreamWorks productions that I actually liked:))
Anyway, I hope “Ratatouille” does really well in
the box office. But more importantly, I hope it reaches or exceeds my expectations when it comes to quality.
Pixar hasn’t let me down, so it seems unlikely that this film would break that pattern.

There is going to be unprecedented competition next year
with these movies squaring off like this yet I actually have to give the advantage to Ratatouille here. It
won’t be THE blockbuster - not with PotC3, HP5, and isn’t Spider Man 3 in the mix there somewhere??? It does
hav some advantages though. First I can guarantee almost none of those dates will be actual release dates for
most of those movies. There will be lots of shuffling and juggling to get the best spots away from the
competition and some will probly even be pulled and pushed to the fall since the field is just so crowded. It is
however my experience that Disney usually walks away with best spots when shuffling is all said and
done.
Also, Ratatouille will single handedly capture the family audience. It’s the only
“family” animated movie coming out thus far (Pending Shrek the Third) and will likely be the only one
to walk away with a G rating. This can be surprisingly huge in attracting families with smaller kids looking for
alternatives to the increasingly raucus HP and PotC movies.
Besides, Ratatouille is by Pixar. Everyone loves Pixar. I mean the majority of the people. People will line up
to watch it.
I wonder if those that didn’t really like Cars liked the teaser for Ratatouille.
As for Shrek the Third - children will probably force their parents to take them to see it. Kids probably
don’t know about Ratatouille, they probably don’t know that it is made by Pixar, they know about Shrek. This is
where Disney will have to have some seriously good marketing. I saw hardly any marketing for Cars over here. I
mean the merchandise was huge! but the actual movie at the cinema advertising was poor. For over the hedge though
I saw signs on the sides of buses, constant TV advertising. I would like to know how Cars did compared to OtH in
Aust.
But isn’t that ironic?? PIXAR rarely ever makes plenty
of trailers . . . just a teaser and maybe two or three trailers. Then AFTER the movie’s released they make a
bunch of TV spots.
. . . and nonetheless . . .
PIXAR makes it out on top with Box Office hits.
It makes no sense advertising wise, but it has always worked!
And that’s because PIXAR’s always worked
on Story first . . .
Somehow, I feel that even though there is obviously going
to be a lot of competition, Pixar will pull through. They always have done in the past, and they’ve built up a
really good reputation now.
A quick side-note, just to ask- has Cars made more money than The Incredibles
yet? Or is it too soon to tell? Because Pixar always seem to make more money with every movie they make.
In terms of domestic box office (U.S. and Canada), the answer is no. It
needs to make another $32 Million or so to surpass The Incredibles. I think that’s
pretty doable, but Cars is going to have to stay in theatres for a while longer. As
a side note, Cars is actually doing better than both Toy Story
2 and Monsters, Inc.. The latter made $255 Million, so there is
definitely a great chance that Cars would surpass The
Incredibles.

My gosh, battle against the sequels!
-Shrek
3
-Spider-man 3
-Pirates 3
I wonder if anybody, by that time, will care about bringing in something
new! sniffs
This is
what PIXAR does, bringing in original ideas. That’s one of the reasons why they don’t want to overdo sequels.
You start to get into a MAJOR rut of Writer’s Block or somethin’ . . . .
EDIT - Oh, and guess what??
Rush Hour 3 is coming out as well next summer.
August 10th, 2007 to be exact.
And since it’s
before September 21/22 (when Fall begins), I this next film counts too:
Resident Evil:
Extinction
Yep, that third movie is coming out September 7th, 2007
So how many sequels is that
now??
I hate it when studios make sequels. They are based on franchise, money making, and
money making. I usually refuse to see movie sequels in theaters because they almost always are worse than the
first, except for Toy Story 2.
Ratatouille has some pretty tough competition, but look at Cars’
competition–how many animated films can possibly be released on several months time?–And Cars is the #2 film of
the year!
I think Ratatouille can beat up the competition by far.
But not all sequels are bad. Sometimes you can put an
original idea into a sequel.
Don?t forget about Surf’s Up (directed by Ash
Brannon also co-director of Toy Story 2) Produced by Sony Pictures Animation, it
comes out June 8, 2007

Ahem…
Meet the Robinsons - March 31, 2007
Although, I wouldn’t
worry about the box office predicament, either. I mean, Pixar has practically beat out every other competitor in
the computer animation field when it comes to movies.
Yeah, and they’ll do it again with
Ratatouille almost certainly.
