Cars 2 CD soundtrack!

Really? Most people I’ve talked with say they can’t stop humming the main theme when they leave the theater.

I haven’t seen it and can’t stop humming it either.

But I have to think really hard to remember a theme from the first film.

I hate to be the kind of guys who agrees with everyone, but the Cars 2 soundtrack was pretty meh.
The Weezer track was good, and the Perfume track was fantastic [spoil]Seriously, I’ve probably listened to it over 50 times[/spoil], but the rest don’t really stick out for me. When I think of songs like Real Gone, Life is a Highway, and Our Town, I immediately think of the film. With the songlist of the Cars 2 soundtrack, you could have told me that this had nothing to do with the movie and I’d believe you.

The soundtrack itself was interesting. Some tracks were great and had that iconic Giacchino feel, but it seemed most came off to me as generic. Even the best tracks aren’t memorable to me. I find it increasingly hard to recognize this film’s ‘trademark sound’. The Incredibles, Ratatouille, and the original Cars all had soundtracks that could not be mistaken for any other, and I’m not saying that about Cars 2, I’m just saying that it doesn’t strive to be on par with those soundtracks. It seems as if the purpose of this soundtrack was to create a spy film score that didn’t come off as a parody but an actual thrilling series. It’s as if Giacchino was so worried people would see his score as a tribute to James Bond, that he focused all his work on giving it an original feel, rather than a distinct feel.

No harsh words to the Big G of course, he’s one of my favorite composers of all time and still is. Even still the soudtrack is good. The songlist is the half of the album that truly feels lacking.

6/10 On a Pixar scale
7/10 In general

I find that if you view this album as a soundtrack for a movie, rather than a soundtrack for a Pixar film, it’s much easier to enjoy it. However, Pixar’s soundtracks are so iconic that it’s incredibly hard to see it any other way.

Then again, just the fact that I can physically hold a Pixar CD for the first time in years is more than enough of a reason to buy it. I can proudly display this CD on my desk any day.

Alright, I’m glad I’m not the only one who wasn’t thrilled with it. Every single time I hear “Life is a Highway” I think Cars but other than the Weezer song I don’t think any of the other music will have an instant connection for me. Just a personal opinion though of course.

Yeah, I agree. I had no issue with the soundtrack–it just didn’t stand out to me, again, with the exception of “You May Think”. I thought Collision of Worlds, while it had a fun sound, was distractingly corny.

Could not agree more. It was alright but I much preferred something like “Our Town” over that.
